Eckart school and childcare finally open

0

After decades of planning and waiting, children in Eindhoven’s Eckart district can go to school in a new school building. The new location for primary school and childcare on Weegschaalstraat opened its doors on Monday.

“There were already plans some 25 years ago. We had to wait a long time for it but we now have a beautiful new school building at last,” says Moniek van Rooij, director of De Kimme, the primary school’s new name. For a long time, no suitable land was available. There were also discussions about financing.

Written off

The 300 children of the primary school and the Billies childcare were initially spread over two locations in outdated buildings. The buildings were poorly insulated and had rotten window frames. “Now everyone is together in one building. So siblings are also back in school together again.”

Van Rooij is happy with the possibilities offered by the new location. “We now have learning areas where we can work across classes. That is today’s education.” The new building is also energy-efficient. “We have the highest possible number of stars. That means a heat pump, solar panels and a basin that collects and reuses water.

Cost

The new building cost about seven million euros, according to municipal documents.

Dijsselbloem explains in speech about incorrect names war memorial

Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem gave a speech during the commemoration on Stadhuisplein in Eindhoven about the war and how black and white it was at that time. And how conspiracy theories were already being spread and manipulation was taking place at the time.

The Mayor is mainly talking about the war memorial on Stadhuisplein, which was placed in 2013 and was discredited in April this year due to the incorrect names. “The decision to adapt the monument is not an easy one. A situation like this is never completely black or white”.

It is of course no coincidence that the war memorial on Stadhuisplein was adjusted just in time for the commemoration on 18 September. The 22 people with a ‘wrong past’ who are on the monument will be removed. In addition, 160 names of people who actually belonged on the monument are added. “This was a difficult decision. A situation is never completely right or wrong. Sometimes we find ourselves in a gray area”, Dijsselbloem said in his speech.

Conscription

For example, there is the name of a German man who came to live in Eindhoven with his parents at a young age. At the age of eighteen he was drafted into the German army. As a German he had to serve in the army and he had no choice, even though he didn’t want that at all. A refusal to serve would otherwise cost him dearly”.

Convicted

“His name therefore remains on the monument and that does not apply to an Eindhoven police officer who helped round up and deport Jews during the war. He was also convicted for this after the war. At the same time, the police officer helped people who were resisting. He told them when they would be arrested, so that they could escape in time. So the police officer did right and wrong things, and is not on the monument”, the Mayor says.

Names added

In addition to the 22 names that have been removed from the monument, more than 160 names have also been added. “These include names of Jews who were in Auschwitz. For example, there is a family whose children died in the concentration camp, but whose parents survived. They later had 11 more children”, Dijsselbloem continues.

“People have also been added who experienced the liberation. People who went home from a concentration camp. And ended up here in Eindhoven in one of the largest shelters in the Netherlands. 23 People still died in that shelter from hardship or illness. And of course resistance fighters who ultimately died in one of the concentration camps”.

Relatives

The Mayor hopes that the relatives who were present at the commemoration will find comfort in the added names and that we will recognise the suffering they endured. Even though the list is not yet complete according to Dijsselbloem. “Archives are still being opened from which new names of war victims can be added. Every few years we will therefore review the list and adjust it where necessary”.

At the end of the speech, Dijsselbloem lets people know that judgment is easy to make and that we should think carefully about the names on the monument. “We will continue to commemorate the victims of the Second World War. You will receive that promise from me and if you want, I will also put it on paper”.

Also Splinter Spektakel cancelled because of Corona

The Splinter Spektakel in the Splinter play park normally puts a smile on many children’s faces every summer. This year it is cancelled.

Despite the fact that the anti corona-virus measures for children under the age of 12 are being relaxed more and more, the organisation is still forced to pull the plug out of the event.

The Splinter Spektakel would have taken place in the week of 13 August. In the play park there would then be various activities for children throughout the week, but the organisation wants to ensure the health of employees and visitors.

All other events at the Splinter have also been cancelled until 1 September. The possibility of organising online activities during the summer is now being researched.

Park Hilaria lauded as most accessible for people with disabilities

0

Park Hilaria in Eindhoven is the most accessible event for people with walking difficulties.

The fair has been given the Gouden Duim (Golden Thumb) by the Platform Gehandicapten Beleid (Eindhoven Disability Policy Platform). In 2018, some events in Eindhoven were visited and assessed by volunteers. They looked at, among other things, parking spaces for disabled persons and a suitable access route for wheelchair users. The readability of signs from a wheelchair was also reviewed, as was the presence of accessible toilets and assistance for people with disabilities.

‘Recognition’

Of all the events visited, Park Hilaria was the best. “We are thrilled with this recognition. We have been working on the event for a number of years to make it really accessible to everyone. And that also includes the disabled. It is good that this is noticed and appreciated”, the fair’s organisers say.

The Zilveren Duim (Silver Thumb) went to the Dutch Design Week in Strijp-S. This is an incentive prize which is awarded for the first time this year.

‘Alleen met de goden’ new performance by Afslag Eindhoven

Abandonment, survival and disrupted family relationships. That’s what the new performance “Alleen met de goden” (alone with the gods), by Afslag Eindhoven theatre group is about. On Thursday 16 March the first performance will be brought to the stage.

When 11-year-old Aaron’s father is convicted of murder, he and his mother are left behind. His mother has her hands full with her own grief, and because of his father’s huge debt, they live in poverty. Aaron is mostly alone. Yet there are people who continue to believe in him, including his kickboxing trainer Art.

During the performance, Yvonne Beukering, the show’s director, wants to focus on the imperfect human being, plodding, fighting and dreaming.

Bestseller
The performance is based on the book “Alleen met de goden” by Alex Boogers. In 2016, the book was awarded the ‘Nederlandse Boekhandelprijs’  (dutch bookstore prize) and nominated for the ‘Libris Literatuurprijs’ (Libris literature prize). Director Yvonne Beukering was touched by the story and turned it into a performance.

“It is a tremendously recognisable story for me. My mother, too, was raised under difficult circumstances and was not exactly a loving mother. She suffered through life. Yet we loved her. Aaron shows man as I like to see him myself: vulnerable, longing and struggling. That in spite of all the misery you overcome by faith in your own strength”.

Win free tickets to Brabantsedag

Ever since the first procession of artisans in 1958, the Brabantsedag parade has grown into a mobile Brabantian history lesson wrapped in a theatre production, which includes quality acting, make-up, dancing, singing, and costumes. The spectacle attracts forty thousand visitors, not bad for a town of ten thousand.

The main attraction is a massive, mobile theatre spectacle, which is the product of the hard work of (currently) sixteen amateur groups, creating social cohesion as it passes through the community of the Pearl of Brabant. The amateur acting groups manage to portray an entire story during the parade, particularly during each stop lasting a mere handful of minutes. Brabant Day has been added to the National Inventory of Non-Material Cultural Heritage, as set out in the international UNESCO treaty that supports and treasures living habits, traditions, skills and rituals and aids in the passing down of such from generation to generation.

To win free tickets to this gala, please answer the following questions by writing to eindhovennews@gmail.com before 20 August. For every correct submission, you win two free tickets.

  1. Where does the Theatre Parade start?

Butterfly Garden has first children’s afternoon of 2020

0

Today (Wednesday), the first children’s afternoon of the year was held in the Vlindertuin (Butterfly Garden) in Waalre.

The garden cancelled the children’s afternoons in April, May, and June. That was because of the coronavirus outbreak. The afternoon included things like treasure hunts and arts and crafts. The Butterfly Garden is open every year in butterfly season

That’s from 1 April to 1 October. Volunteers do weekly maintenance during this season. They do so out of season too, weather-permitting.

Weekly inventory

The butterflies are also inventoried every week. The Garden does so for the Butterfly Foundation. You can download the results (in Dutch).

There are also regular special activities such as children’s afternoons, working days, and moth counting. The next kids’ afternoons are planned for 26 August and 16 September. Each time from 14:00 to 16:00.

Children can also take a digital treasure hunt with their smartphone. There is also an ornamental garden and various habitats. Groups of ten or more people must register via email in advance.

There are guided group tours available by appointment for €20.
