The hip-hop dancers of The Invasion, part of dance school In2Dance in Best finished second at the world championships in Blackpool. The Invasion consists of 29 dancers between the ages of 12 and 22.

Already in the first preliminary round it appeared that the dancers from Best were one of four teams to go directly to the finals, allowing them to skip all other preliminaries. Trainer Cem Sahin: “I am speechless…. I never expected that we were allowed to go to the World Cup. That we also won a second prize now is a dream come true”.

The trainer, who spent about five hours a day with his dancers during the last days of the summer vacation, is proud: “They did their best and put a lot of time and energy into this adventure. We really entered into this as a team and to be rewarded with this award is amazing”.

School raises money for Giro555 with Turkish delicacies

The playground of primary school ‘t Slingertouw in Meerhoven is full of tables with Turkish delicacies on Wednesday afternoon. In this way, the school wants to collect money for victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

It’s set up in three days, and the tables are full of food. “Everyone is so involved. When I came up with the idea, everyone was already ready,” says Sultan Tuter-Deniz, one of the organizers of the event who works at the school. “More than forty mothers have registered. They really wanted to make something and donate the money.”

Children

Not only the parents of the students want to help, the children themselves are also very involved. “The children themselves had already started collecting bottles, baking cupcakes, you name it. All kinds of initiatives. Then we decided to do something together as a school,” says Sultan Tuter-Deniz.

‘t Slingertouw is an international school. Many children have a Turkish background. “I’m Turkish myself and so many people died there,” says a young student. “I want to help them as much as possible,” he says. Another young girl also thinks it’s important to help. “It’s so bad that people are in danger there and we’re just playing here,” she says about why she thinks it’s so important to raise money.

Tasty

The delicacies are sure to please. Groups of people are waiting at each table to buy some food. “It’s a good way to raise money,” says a parent who has already bought some treats. “We have good food, and the victims of the earthquake receive money for help. It is an important goal.”

On Wednesday, a national campaign via Giro555 will be used to collect money for victims of the disaster all day long. You can donate via this website.

Hermans and Roelofs present new winter collection at DDW

0

“Timescape”, the latest winter collection by Eindhoven fashion designer Emily Hermans, can be seen during Dutch Design Week (DDW).

Photographer Mike Roelofs, also from Eindhoven, captured the collection. The photos and videos can be seen in a continuous exhibition at Hermans’ MLY Store at Strijp-S.

Timescape

The title “Timescape” stands for a visual journey through time which designer Hermans wants to show. “I used silhouettes from different style periods and incorporated all kinds of nostalgic details into this collection. For example, buttons that come from a lady who worked in Paris in the 1920s to 1940s,” explains Hermans.

Hermans and Roelofs travelled together to Loch Lomond in Scotland for the visual material of the collection. Models wear clothes in the same colours as their surroundings. This makes them disappear, as it were, into the landscape.

Besides the exhibition, Hermans also organizes a daily “No Waste Workshop” at the MLY Store. She wants to draw attention to the theme of garment-waste through her workshop.

The exhibition and workshop are free to visit.

Koelhuis open one last time before major renovation

The Koelhuis (cooling house) opened its doors one last time on the former Campina site in Eindhoven. The monumental building will soon become a creative and technological breeding ground. During the Dutch Design Week, visitors will get a preview.

During the Dutch Design Week, all kinds of installations were installed in the building. They should make people think about the world we live in. “The large soap bubbles on the building symbolise the bubbles in real life”, Marjolein Vlaming, the designer of the large balls on the outside of the Koelhuis, says. “Those bubbles can burst”.

The special buildings in and on the building show the path the Koelhuis is taking as a creative place. The intention is that after the renovation, the industrial monument will have a function where technology and creativity come together. “There is no word for it in Dutch”, says manager Arnold van de Water, “but it will be a place for immersive experiences: a world where you enter with image and sound”.

The Koelhuis

The Koelhuis used to be part of the Campina factory, where hundreds of people worked. Tens of thousands of tons of ice creams were stored here and then sold from Groningen to Maastricht. “It used to be minus thirty degrees here, you were only allowed in here for thirty minutes. Cool to be here now”, a surprised visitor says.

Raw edges

After twenty years, the Koelhuis was decommissioned. Afterwards, squatters lived in it for a while and in 2017 it was on the list of buildings in Eindhoven that would be demolished. A stop has been put to that. “It is a very special building and really belongs to the rough edges of Eindhoven”, Van de Water says. Factorf is the company that is responsible for the renovation.

Workshops on Artificial Intelligence in Eindhoven library

Everyone has to deal with Artificial Intelligence, but not everyone is aware of it. That’s why the library in Eindhoven is organising the AI Parade. During the whole month of May you can learn all about this smart technology and how it affects our daily lives. Monday was the first workshop.

“We are training our computer”, one of the participants said. The participants are working on machine learning, which allows the computer to learn things on its own. With pieces of fruit, they are training the computer. “We took hundreds of pictures of an apple. This allows the computer to recognise the apple”, another participant says.

In everyday life, everyone deals with AI (artificial intelligence, ed.), but for many people it is still unknown. That’s why the AI Parade is coming to the library in Eindhoven. With various workshops and lectures they will discuss Artificial Intelligence.

Learning
“Besides machine learning, the participants were also given an explanation of what AI is”, workshop instructor Randi Nuij says. The participants found the workshop instructive. “A computer has to know a lot before it can really do anything”, one participant said. “It doesn’t always get it right either. The computer thinks I am a background and it also sometimes thinks an apple is an orange”, another participant adds.

Fresh algorithm generator
A mini-expo will also be on display during the AI Parade. Until 16 May, the Fresh Algorithms generator is on display in the library. Based on five questions, the machine creates a recipe for a meal of your liking. And that can be anything from world cuisine to something easy to Dutch food.

The AI Parade in the Eindhoven library lasts until 31 May.

Concerti Fetti back in Eindhoven

Jan Smit, Django Wagner and Jan Biggel: these were some of the artists who performed on Wednesday evening in a full Indoor Sports Center during Concerti Fetti. The festival for people with disabilities is back in Eindhoven. A crowd of 4500 visitors sang and danced along.

The festive evening, organised by the Gehandicapten Concert Eindhoven foundation, has since become a household name in the city. The 20th edition was held in 2019, at the time still in the Beursgebouw.

“Visitors only need three notes and two words to sing along to the songs at the top of their lungs. They enjoy it as if their birthday and carnival fall on the same day,” explains Meranda de Laat of the organisation.

‘Nothing is more fun than this’

More than 100 volunteers contributed to the realisation of Concerti Fetti. “Seeing them smile: that’s what we do it for. It’s incredibly rewarding work.”

Carnaval parade cancelled

0

The parade planned for Saturday in Lampegat (Eindhoven) has been cancelled. This was the decision made by the Eindhoven Carnaval Federation (FEC) after discussions with emergency services, the City Council and other parties involved.

The parade has been cancelled due to the poor weather conditions predicted for this weekend. The main culprit being strong winds.

The organisation made the decision to prevent accidents.”There is a big chance Carnaval trucks might be blown over by the strong winds,” comments an FEC spokesperson.

“Based on the current [weather] forecast, this is the only correct choice. To delay the decision would not serve the parade participants’ interests.” It is currently unknown if the parade will proceed on a different date.

The weather

On Saturday, strong winds with average speeds of between 29 and 49 km/h are expected. The winds could reach a speed of up to 75 km/h. This is cause for alarm regarding the planned Carnaval parade. Strong winds are also predicted on Sunday.

Mayor Jorritsma supports the Federation’s decision, saying “It is a brave decision on the part of the FEC and emergency services. I fully support it; safety comes first.” He also expressed empathy for the disappointment of volunteers and others involved.
