Students have voted: “I hope for very few right wing votes”

The students of the Eindhoven Van Maerlantlyceum have already cast their votes during elections at school. Almost a quarter of the 200 students who participated voted for GL/PvdA (GroenLinks/PvdA, green left party/labour party).

The result is a precursor to the real elections on Wednesday. High school has recently paid a lot of attention to politics. The students find themes such as climate and education important. “I hope that there will not be many right-wing votes today, but I hope that Frans Timmermans will get many votes,” says a youngster who is worried about more extremism in the country.

Opinions

The students are not really allowed to vote yet (only from the age of 18 onwards). Yet the election has a purpose. “We are already involved in politics and we see from each other what we find important. We mainly talk about the climate and what it will look like in the future. Opinions really differ on that subject”, Bernice, one of the organisers of the elections, says.

“The result has no further impact, but we want to see whether we can measure up to the real elections. Do our choices correspond, or not at all. We therefore keep a close eye on the polls to compare our results”, co-organiser Carlijn explains.

Minimal differences

After GroenLinks/PvdA, D66 (democrats, 17.4 per cent) was popular. This was followed by VVD (people’s party for freedom and democracy, 14.5 per cent) and FvD (forum for democracy, 9.4 per cent). A striking detail is that no one voted for Pieter Omtzigt’s NSC (new social contract). A party that, according to polls, will win many seats. This also applies to a lesser extent to the CDA (Christian democrats) and the BBB (farmer-citizen movement). They both received 1.4 per cent of the votes. “I actually expected that our school would mainly vote right-wing”, one of the students explains.

“I already expected that things would be very different at our school. They choose either very left or very right. So VVD or GroenLinks/PvdA. That is what we have noticed here at school”, Carlijn says.

The polling stations for the Tweede Kamerverkiezingen (house of representatives elections) opened this morning.

CDA and Ouderen Appèl want temporary emergency bridge to Stratumseind

The little bridge over the Dommel between Stratumseind and Stratumsedijk will be closed for over a month. Ouderen Appèl Hart voor Eindhoven (elderly appeal heart for Eindhoven), (OAHvE) and the CDA (christian democrats) now want an emergency bridge to replace it.

Earlier, OAHvE asked council questions about the work on the little bridge because the group fears it will cost hospitality entrepreneurs money. Indeed, just during Glow and Dutch Design Week, the Stratumseind is now poorly accessible.

The groups would have preferred that the bridge could remain open in the weekend, something that entrepreneurs on Stratumseind would also have counted on. Therefore, the groups also want to know if something went wrong in the communication.

In addition, visitors to the major events taking place before December would have to detour at least 300 metres to get to Stratumseind, CDA and OAHvE write.

Finally, the groups report that, as far as they are concerned, an emergency bridge should be constructed. After all, that would have been done before.

Thirteen people from Eindhoven receive medal in Muziekgebouw

It is Koningsdag (King’s Day) and so it is time again for the traditional list of honours. In the Muziekgebouw twelve chosen Eindhoven citizens received a Royal Decoration from Mayor John Jorritsma. One resident got his ribbon pinned at the Ministry of Defence in The Hague.

During the ceremony in the Muziekgebouw there was a moment of silence for all the receivers. There was plenty of appreciation for the new ribbon bearers. Seven people are now ‘Lid in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’ (member of the order of Oranje-Nassau), three are ‘Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’ (knight of the order of Oranje-Nassau), two were awarded ‘Lid in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau met zwaarden’ (member of the order of Oranje-Nassau with swords) and one became ‘Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw’ (knight of the order of the Dutch Lion).

The thirteen lucky ones

Eva González Pérez gained national fame when she brought the benefits affair to light. For years, she has been a great support to fellow countrymen and women who got stuck in the Dutch system through no fault of their own. She was appointed ‘Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau”.

Since 2003, Andre van Gorp has been active as a volunteer for a vulnerable group of clients of SWZ Zonhove, an institution for people with severe multiple disabilities in Son en Breugel. He is now ‘Lid van de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’.

For years, Willem Heerings has played an important role in the commemoration of the liberation of Eindhoven and Nuenen. The fact that Nuenen still celebrates the liberation today is partly thanks to Heerings. He is now ‘Lid in de van Oranje-Nassau’.

Since 1990, Henri van Hout has been the dean of the St. Catharinagilde (guild) in Strijp. Where he is involved in many activities. He received the decoration ‘Lid in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’.

Dolf Hulshoff has been active as a volunteer since the end of the 1980s. He has dedicated himself to improving the quality of life for local residents and to connecting people in Vaartbroek, Heesterakker and Bokt by organising joint activities. He has been appointed ‘Lid van de Orde van Orange-Nassau’.

Ans Hulshoff is a very committed volunteer who has been active for decades. She has been a volunteer for numerous social organisations since the 1970s. She also received a medal.

Leo Joosse is an example of natural leadership. He has shown his added value in several places within the Commando Luchtstrijdkrachten (Royal Netherlands Air Force command). He was honoured as ‘Lid in de Orde van Orange-Nassau with swords’.

Tiny Korsten has been involved as a board member since the Stichting Bewonersorganisatie Burghplan in Stratum (foundation of the Burghplan residents’ organisation in Stratum) in 1992, most of the time as treasurer. She is also involved in organising all the activities in the neighbourhood. She is now ‘Lid van de Orde van Orange-Nassau’.

Frans Prinsen is a binding factor within Strijp. For years he has been a selfless volunteer for various organisations. He also received a ribbon of honour.

Dick Schoot is one of the figureheads of endoscopic gynaecological surgery in the Netherlands and has set up a working group for this. His achievements are far more extensive than can be expected from a general gynaecologist. He was the only one to be awarded ”Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw.

Jopie Verdonk is a volunteer with his heart on the sleeve and in the right place. Since 2004 Verdonk has been involved in the South-East Brabant branch of Hoormij NVVS, the national patient organisation for people with a hearing impairment. She is now ‘Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’.

Frans van Vugt became a member of the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Sociaal Psychiatrisch Verpleegkundigen (dutch association for social psychiatric nurses) in 1979. On a voluntary basis he was active in profiling and promoting the professional group. He was awarded  ‘Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’.

Eric Nettekoven received his award at the Ministry of Defence in The Hague. He is co-founder of the Stichting Veteranen Brabant-Zuidoost (foundation brabant-zuidoost). The foundation was set up in 2006 and he has been a board member ever since. He was decorated as ‘Lid in de Orde van of Oranje-Nassau with swords’.

Fear reigns in Strijp-S at the Factory of Fear

Anxiety communication is everywhere and yet we don’t notice it often. Fear communication is central to the Angstfabriek – Factory of Fear.

The Factory of Fear is a theatrical experience in which the audience is led in small groups through different interactive spaces and comes into contact with the terms fear communication and fear economy.

“Anxiety communication is very much about the way news is delivered,” explains Chanu Autar, from the Factory of Fear. “A concrete example: refugees. Are you talking about groups of people who seek refuge in our country. Or are you talking about a stream of refugees.”

This fake fear factory cleverly responds to this kind of social fear. The factory will also measure the impact of a message on you. Hiske Arts, project leader: “During a part of our tour, we can see how you deal with the messages on the basis of, among other things, a heart rate monitor and a brain activity meter. We can also see how messages affect you. Later it’s your turn to make your own news. ”

In the Factory of Fear the main aim is to make the visitor think about all the news that can be seen. By taking a look behind the scenes of the fake factory you can make a link with real life. And that awareness is exactly the goal of this project. “We live in a difficult world when it comes to information. Everyone can post everything on social media,” says Arts. Autar adds: “We hope that visitors start thinking about what they see in real life. This factory is fake, but we do have it in real life: companies, politicians, television, YouTube, you name it. If you recognize this, you can also deal with it more consciously.”

The Factory of Fear can be seen on Strijp-S and can be visited until Friday, October 18. Events available in English can be found at https://angstfabriek.nl/english/

Wednesday costume a hit in party shop ‘t Snabbeltje

26 more nights of sleep and then it’s time: carnival! Eliëtte de Haas of party shop ‘t Snabbeltje in Eindhoven has already bought a huge amount of costumes. The carnival jitters can already be felt among the customers: ”When they hear the carnival music in the store, people immediately get into the mood.”

According to Eliette, one type of costume is impossible to get hold of. The dresses from the Netflix series Wednesday are flying over the counter like hot cakes. It has been a huge success, especially with children. Fortunately, we managed just in time to order the suits from the suppliers.” In addition, the tracksuits are again very popular among adults this year.

From Pikachu to carnival jacket

In addition to the popular costumes, there is of course plenty of choice for other outfits. For example, a customer in the store tells us that she makes her own clothes for carnival. ”I still walk through the shops to get inspiration from costumes.” There are also children in the store. The young girl already knows exactly what she will be: ”Pikachu!”.

If you don’t need eye-catching costumes, you can always go for the carnival jackets. Eliette also has them in all colors of the rainbow. This year we have a new collection with a jungle theme or even with Greek Gods on it. Of course you can always opt for the standard black carnival jacket that you can decorate with emblems.”

On February 19, the carnival party starts in Brabant.

Carnival: large mirror tent

0

It has been discussed for years. Carnival 2019 it will finally happen. A large mirror tent will be built at Eindhoven’s Wilhelminaplein.

Inside this large tent, the most important thing will be the creation of an authentic, old-fashioned carnival feeling. Nostalgic party music will help! “Carnivals without that commercial carnival and house music, but instead with bands and karaoke”, mentions one of the organisers, Joep Verheijen.

The organisers respond to a need for carnival parties among “older youngsters”. However, this does specifically not mean, “only the over-forties carnival enthusiasts are welcome. In this large tent, everybody is welcome to join in the fun or to just have a nice chat”.

Carnival in “Lampegat”

Expats get to know the city again: “They have to feel at home here”

0

For the first time since the outbreak of corona a year and a half ago, there is a life tour of Eindhoven for expats again. It is being organised by the Holland Expat Center South.

The tour is meant  for helping new expats get to know the city, but is also  a network meeting place for social contacts. One of the guests is the Indian, Shrabashe. She has only lived in Eindhoven for a few months, where both she and her husband work. She says: “The contacts I have now are mainly colleagues from Tilburg University. I do enjoy meeting other expats who are also new here”.

The group of guests who join the tour is diverse. They come from the United States, Turkey, England or India, for example. Most of them have not lived here for long and are eager to get to know the city and our culture. Shrabashe: “I don’t find the difference in culture so difficult. I have lived in many different places and I have got used to having to adapt all the time. Here in the Netherlands, people are generally friendly and what is unique about the Netherlands is that we can talk to everyone in English. That’s more difficult in most other countries”.

Getting used to the new city

City guide Anneke Leenders takes great pleasure in showing these people around. She loves telling them about her city and is happy to help the newcomers with the challenges they face. Leenders: “One of the tricky things we encountered just now during the tour is our traffic regulations. The cycle path is really only for cyclists and the pavement for walking. Many expats don’t know that. During the tour, I can tell them how it works here”.

During the tour, guests learn many facts about the city, such as about Philips, the Sint Catharinakerk and where the entertainment areas are. “This helps the expats. They not only learn about the city, but they can also talk about it with friends and family. That way they feel more at home here,” Anneke Leenders says.

Expats or internationals

Josine Frankhuizen, from the Holland Expat Centre South, organises various activities for the expats. According to Frankhuizen, when the expats stay here longer, they are no longer called expats, but internationals: “Eindhoven wants to keep the knowledge we bring in as long as possible. That is why we try, as much as possible, to make the people who come to work here and their families feel at home here”.

The guided tour is a first step towards this. “You often see that the person who already works here has enough contacts through their work. The partner, often the woman, quickly becomes isolated. At the start tonight, they start talking to each other and make their first contacts. In addition, they now know who we are and we can help them further with, for example, finding work”, Frankhuizen says.

From now on, the tour is every first Friday of the month.
