Anniek named best junior pancake baker

Eindhoven’s Anniek Verbunt has won the title of ‘Best Junior Pancake Baker in the Netherlands’. Under the watchful eye of a jury, the 9-year-old defeated two other candidates in the final.

The jury consisted of six grandfathers and grandmothers during the final in Veenendaal. These gourmets were unanimous after the final battle, in which the three finalists had to show what they had to offer. “Anniek is the ideal junior pancake baker. The skills to bake the tastiest, round pancakes and peace and concentration behind the stove. She is also an expert at baking the ‘normal’ pancake and her special pancake with marinated apples and raisins. ”

Starting signal

With the title in her pocket, Anniek can now give the starting signal for the national pancake festival next week, together with the TV baker Cas Wolters, which will take place at her own school, De Achtbaan in Eindhoven. On that day, around 85,000 students from primary schools throughout the country will work for the elderly. More than 1,700 schools are expected to participate.

The competition and the national day are an initiative of the companies Tefal, Blueband and Koopmans.

400 Ukrainian children forget worries at sports day Philips Stadium

Ukrainian children from schools in Eindhoven could forget all their worries for a while. They were invited to a sports and games day in the Philips Stadium. The initiative of companies from the region was much appreciated by the participating children: “Very sweet that they organise this for us”.

The children have missed sports since they were forced to flee their homeland. “I played in a special volleyball team. I have very good memories of that”, Lina says. Zhenya also missed sports, also because she was in many sports: ”I like basketball, football and dancing. I like a lot of sports”.

Forget worries

For the organisation it was especially important that the children had a pleasant afternoon: ”We have ensured that there is something nice for everyone to do. Then all of the children can have a pleasant afternoon that allows them to forget their worries for a while”, enthusiastic volunteer Jacline de Kort says.

Chairman of the Partnerfonds (partner fund) of Brainport companies Staf Depla also mentions the importance of events like these: ”We have to help the children to get on with their lives. We do that with an event like this, but also with other projects. We have to help them as much as we help our own children”.

Gratitude

The children are very grateful for this event: “It is very kind that they organise this for us”, Zhenya says. Lina is also happy: ”I understand that it is expensive to organise this kind of thing. Therefore, I am very grateful that people want to do this for us”.

Kapsalon Theatre: without an audience, but to be watched live

Parktheater Eindhoven participates with a variety of performances today in the national campaign ‘Kapsalon Theater’ (hairdressing theatre), to protest against the forced continuous closure of the cultural sector. Without an audience, but with a livestream and broadcast via Studio040.

Because of the national campaign, Parktheater is transformed into a hair salon for one day. The Barber Station Eindhoven is moving their business to the great hall of Parktheater. During their haircut, clients will be entertained by artist performances. This way, the artists can still practice their profession within the permitted measures and they have the space to spread this important message. In addition, the theatre performers will receive a haircut to give them a boost in a playful way.

Artists visiting the hair salon include Tigre Blanco, Rob Scheepers, Jeroens Clan, The Slampampers, Björn van der Doelen, Anneke van Giersbergen, Thijs van de Meeberg, Flamenco Encuentros, Camilla Blue, Ruud Borgers, Magic Tom & Yuri, Oscar Kocken (host) and Quintijn Lohman (side-kick).

The campaign is part of a national protest that was set up by, among others, cabaret artist Diederik Ebbinge. In many municipalities, theatres did not get permission for the campaign, but as far as Ebbinge is concerned, the campaign goes on anyway. In talkshow M on NPO1 last night, he said that the cultural sector, as the “goodie two-shoes” has decided “not to be that any more”.

The campaign can be seen from 10:00 to 17:00 on the website of Parktheater, on television at Studio040 and through the website and mobile app of Studio040.

Last weekend in Eindhoven: the festival of Autumn, Durga Puja

It is that time of the year. When the rains are over and the winter is yet to set in. When the leaves start turning gold and yet there are those fleecy white clouds float in the azure sky. There is that nip in the air that marks the advent of autumn in Bengal, India. The season for Bengal’s most popular festival- the Durga Puja (Worship of Goddess Durga).

Eindhoven Sharad Utsav (ESU) in co- operation with Stichting Bonghoven organised the greatest festival of the Bengali community, Durga Puja in Eindhoven from 12 October to 14 October 2018 at the Wijkscentrum Blixems. Stichting Bonghoven is a small group of few Bengali families who have come together to organize and celebrate not only Durga Puja, but also such other events to showcase their cultural diversity and actively carry forward the traditionally rich legacy of Bengal. It aims at promoting friendship, harmony and cultural exchange with other organizations and groups in the Netherlands.

What is Durga Puja?

Durga Puja ranks among the most popular festivals in India. It is orignally a four-day festival and is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga. It is celebrated with immense fanfare and great enthusiasm. It is a significant festival of Bengal, India that has great social and cultural importance. For the Indians, especially Bengalis, it is much more than a devotional experience. It’s an intrinsic emotional bonding with their land, their people and their community.

The Highlights of the event

The grand event began on the 12th October with an Indian Food Festival which had various food stalls offering delicious cuisine from different parts of India. ‘It is like being in a carnival,’ said Miriam with enthusiasm. ‘I came mainly to taste some dishes like kebab and Chicken curry.’ The crowd on the opening day was roughly around 250 and they enjoyed good food and drinks. The cosy corridor inside the    Blixems was transformed into a cozy culinary feast hall showcasing dishes from known Indian restaurants in Eindhoven and other cities in the Netherlands. It was the perfect opportunity to sample dishes from the stalls  without their exorbitant price tags! There were also jewelleries and craft stalls along with music and dance performances.

The goal of the Eindhoven Sharad Utsav (ESU) team was to recreate the magic, the nostalgia, the euphoria that people enjoyed during Durga Puja in Bengal, India here in the Netherlands far away from home, in a comfy, homely atmosphere, and yet staying true to the authentic experience. As the president of Stichting Bonghoven Mr. Dipankar Roy said in his opening speech: ‘ There has been numerous meetings, hours of planning, buying and shopping, ordering items from India, months of frenzied preparation to bring forth this event succesfully.’

Culural performances and traditions of Bengal

Durga Puja in Bengal is a time for bonding with family and friends; for leaving behind one’s worries, if only for a while. The rigours of daily life are in some sort of suspe

nded animation during the four days of fun-filled cultural carnival. Routines, schedules, diets and deadlines all go for a toss. And the best of dance, oratory and music skills beg to be flaunted in the umpteen cultural events.

In the Eindhoven Durga Puja too there was plenty of fascinating cultural performances for all- Drama, Dances from various parts of India, Singing performances, Quiz and

Sit & Draw events for children, Dandiya (a folk dance from the state of Gujarat, India where men and women both can participate playing to the beats with colorful sticks wearing their ethnic attire), the much awaited traditional Dhunuchi Naach (a devotional dance performed holding an earthen pot filled with burning coconut husk and camphor) .

The event ended on Sunday 14th October with the ritual of ‘Sindur Khela, (Vermillion game) a Bengali Hindu tradition where married women smear each other with vermillion on the last day of the Durga Puja. ‘It feels ecstatic to be here, to feel the magical pull of traditions with which we were raised in Bengal,’ said a visitor who came from Den Haag to be a part of the festivities. ‘The event is well-managed, if I hadn’t come I would have missed it big time.’

Eindhoven Sharad Utsav (ESU) team in co- operation with Stichting Bonghoven looks back with pride and is excited to bring in the Durga Puja in Eindhoven next year and extends its good wishes to all the viewers (500+) who visited them to support their event for the three days and Eindhoven News who was their media partner all throughout..

Noche de Tuna Ciudad de Luz 2023

The yearly Tuna festival brings a spoonfull of Spain to the Netherlands. An event full of Spanish student music that has become a true tradition over the past decades. The city of lights (Eindhoven) was the first in the Netherlands where a so-called ‘tuna’ was established.

In 1964, a group of Eindhoven students were travelling to Spain for holidays when they came across the centuries-old Spanish ‘tunas’, a tradition that originated in the Middle Ages among students who travelled the country from teacher to teacher, making music in exchange for food, drink and a place to sleep. They played alone, but soon also in groups.

Join the celebration on Friday evening for the music at the Pasa Bares, a musical pub crawl through the city center of Eindhoven, and on Saturday afternoon for the stage performances at the Wim van Doorne Music Kiosk.

The festival is free to attend and suitable for all ages.

You can vote for the best group at the Van Doorne kiosk.

DAF Museum to open in July

0

The DAF Museum will reopen on 1 July, the institution announced.

It reopened in November 2019. The museum, however, closed in mid-March again and remained so more than three months.

In April, the museum announced they’d use the closure to complete certain work. That work included lighting in the museum’s new wing. The museum also said the corona crisis wouldn’t cause financial problems for them.

Opening a month later

The museum states they’re not taking safety for granted with the opening. Museums were actually allowed to open on 1 June. But the DAF Museum deliberately chose not to open until a month later.

The museum used that time to corona-proof everything. They’ve set up a one-way route, and there’s enough space for visitors to keep the required 1,5m distance. Visitors can reserve tickets via the museum website from 24 June.

Tickets cost between €5 and €10 with free admittance for children under the age of five.

Sinterklaas house saved: ‘Some days more Piets than others’

The Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas) House Eindhoven has been saved and so the first children can enter Steentjeskerk (stone church) on Saturday. Last week, chairman Olof van Gelder sounded the alarm because there was a major shortage of volunteers. Dozens of people have now registered and the five-year anniversary can be celebrated.

Van Gelder had sleepless nights last week, because the Sinterklaas celebration was still highly uncertain. “We have a permanent group of volunteers who fortunately help every year, but there are also people who can no longer do it. Because they have moved, have another job or no longer feel like it”.

So this year it was borderline, but thanks to last week’s call, the Sinterklaas House is running again. “Eighteen volunteers have registered within a week. We are now minimally occupied, so this means that some days there are more Sinterklaas helpers than others. In any case, we do not have to disappoint any children”.

Tickets available

This was a lot of reassurance for the organisation, because the preparations were already in full swing. “We had already advertised extensively in the city, the building obviously had to be rented and all kinds of other costs had already been incurred. If it had ultimately not gone ahead, this would have been a real blow to us”.

Fortunately, ticket sales are going in the right direction and have even been sold out for days. “There are still plenty of tickets available, but now that the Sinterklaas news has started, things are going extra fast”.
