Learn more about multilingual kids and help raise money

As many parents in Eindhoven know, raising multilingual children can be a challenge.

Heritage Language Schools Eindhoven (HLSE) is therefore organising a webinar. It’s called Understanding Bilingual Children. Dr Franck Scola will be the speaker at this event.

Dr Scola is an expert in his field. He lectures at the University of the Mediterranean and the University of Paris-Dauphine in France. He’s also an expert consultant, working with various organisations.

These include not only UNESCO and the London Academy of Diplomacy. But also the French National Education and the Agency for Teaching French Abroad.

Misdiagnosis

Dr Scola writes training courses for psychologists and speech therapists too. He knows that multilingual children can be misdiagnosed. What is a genuine speech impairment, and what shouldn’t concern parents?

During the webinar, Dr Scola will outline different types of multilingualism. He’ll dismantle some preconceived ideas about it. And he’ll put several notions about childhood bilingualism in a new light.

These notions are related to not only cognitive and academic development. But also medical, speech, and identity development. The discussion is aimed at multilingual kids’ parents and caregivers. But others interested in the topic are also welcome.

Also a fundraiser

But, the event has a dual function. HSLE wants to raise money. That’s for the start-up costs of a non-profit foundation based on their current activities.

HLSE’s goal is to support and bring together mother tongue (“heritage language”) programmes. They want to increase the programmes’ visibility. HLSE also wishes to provide these programme organisers with networking and professional development opportunities.

Also, HLSE arranges outreach events to inform the public about multilingualism. And they facilitate the addition of languages to the Eindhoven Library’s International Children’s Book Collection.

Details

The Understanding Bilingual Children webinar will be on Thursday, 3 June, from 20:00 – 21:30. Attendance costs €12.50. You can register here.

Upon registering, attendees can submit a question. The organisers will do their best to get answers to as many of the collected questions as possible. That will be during a Q&A with Dr Scola after his talk.

The organisers will donate the attendees’ fees to the non-profit Stichting Francofilous. This is the French heritage language programme for primary school students in Eindhoven. It’s part of the HLSE network and is co-organising the event.

Heritage Language Schools Eindhoven ensures that people can easily find heritage language program information. They help families, Dutch schools, and education advisors. The HLSE website has a list of the available programmes. It also has news, event info, and other resources.

Happy Sunday Fest in Philips de Jonghpark

0

The weather changed a bit, but the summer isn’t over yet.. that means that still quite a few festivals are there to come. This particular one will take place on Sunday 19th of August.

As the name suggests its a happy, relaxed, lazy Sunday party.. but, be warned, its not too lazy, as there are many exciting tribute bands performing, what about these names: Amy Winehouse, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and several others. Sure its not the real thing, but be assured you will hear some great music, and see some awesome shows.

Apart from lots of great artists, there is a market, foodtrucks and there are craft beers. All this in one of the most beautiful parks of Eindhoven, created and donated by the Philips family in 1920. The festival starts at 12.00 and last till about 22.00. The entrance is free!

Tamil New Year in Eindhoven: ‘It creates connection’

0

Dancing, singing and eating. There will be an extensive New Year’s celebration for the Indian Tamil community in Eindhoven on Saturday. This time in the Muziekgebouw.

The day, organized by Eyal Foundation, is filled with various performances, including skits, classical dance and a band. There are a total of 24 acts, from both children and adults. In addition to the performances, dinner will be provided with various Indian dishes such as bonda, rasam and idiyappam sodhi. “Tamil New Year is very popular among the Indian Tamil community here in the city,” said Beena Arunraj, founder of Eyal Eindhoven Foundation. “Over 700 people are expected to come.”

Gathering

During Tamil New Year, the Indian Tamil community celebrates their culture and heritage. In addition, it is a way to get to know others and get together with a large group. “During Indian weddings, you meet between 500 and 1,000 people in one day. They don’t have these weddings here. They miss the togetherness.”

Important

“For the Indian community here in Eindhoven, Tamil New Year is more important than other celebrations. Eyal Tamil New Year is not only about the day itself, but also about what precedes it. Starting in February, groups start practicing their act. Every week they meet once and from mid-March they meet twice a week. People come together and children can play with each other. It creates connection ”

Eyal Foundation Eindhoven

Eyal Eindhoven Foundation is an organization that forms the collective identity of Indian Tamils in the region. With 30 volunteers, Eyal provides a few events every year. Tamil New Year is the largest of these.

The Tamils are a people group in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Myanmar, Fiji, South Africa, Cameroon and other African countries. They speak their own language: Tamil.

VVD member Daan de Kort in the race for inclusion award

Daan de Kort from Veldhoven is in the running for the Ctalents Diamond Awards, a prize that recognizes people and organizations that excel in the field of inclusion. The visually impaired VVD member has been committed to people with a visual impairment for years.

That is why the member of parliament has been nominated for the Ctalents Diamond Awards in the leader category.

As a politician, De Kort is committed to people with a visual impairment. In addition, Daan has worked in the European Blind Union in the past for the accessibility of elections within the member states in Europe. He has also been an ambassador for the Eye Fund for many years.

Limit

His commitment to people who are visually impaired does not come out of the blue. Daan de Kort lost about ninety percent of his eyesight in 2008. He has personally experienced what it is like when authorities want to determine for you how you should organize your life, according to the organization behind the awards. That is why the VVD member is now spreading the message that people should not be limited by their disability.

You can vote for Daan de Kort until 29 March.

Portal: The Next Gen concert to honour war veterans

During ‘Portal: The Next Gen’, loud music pops out of the speakers most of the day, but not at eight in the evening. That’s when the bar closes, and the music turns off.

The hardstyle event holds two minutes of silence for war victims. ”If you don’t keep your mouth shut, you will go out.”

Portal The Next Gen

These are the words of organiser Max van der Linde (21). Together with co-organiser Djem Oosterbroek (19), he wants to send a signal. ”The rawstyle and hardcore scene is often seen negatively in the news. We want to turn that around and show that we do show respect for this. To also show that things can be different and that we are not boys and girls who give a shit about everything,” says Max.

Bad image

Indeed, according to the pair, that image is wrong. ”People think we are a bunch of madmen who go to the typhus, ramming and taking drugs. That bad stigma is just not there anymore,” Djem explains. Thus, there is a ‘zero-tolerance’ drug policy during the party. Although the music has to be your taste. ”To an outsider, the music seems quite aggressive. We have that certain audience that comes purely for the music and our concept. You notice that all the visitors know the music and shout and sing along, which makes the atmosphere top-notch. I dare say there is never a fight.”

So, both the audience and the DJs, they have received positive reactions to their scheduled moment of silence. After the two minutes, the event resumes. ”Again, it is not the intention that everyone stands there stricken. It has to remain light-hearted. We will think about it for those two minutes but enjoy it even more afterwards”, says Djem.

Tears

For the Media and Event Management students at SintLucas, it is the third time they have held the music event. Like the previous times, this edition is also sold out. Four hundred men will be stomping at Club BOLD in Eindhoven on Saturday.

”I could never have imagined a year ago that where I am standing now was possible. I’m sure I’ll have a moment of realisation at the event. Then there might be tears too; that’s how much passion we have,” Max says.
