Carnival without usual kick-off party

0

Next year’s Carnival won’t start in the usual way.

The regional media group, Omroep Brabant, has decided not to start Eindhoven’s Carnaval 2021 with the well-known 3 Uurkes Vurraf. Because of the anti-corona measures, the jam-packed party can’t go ahead. It usually attracts about 1,600 people to the Pullman Hotel.

Omroep Brabant and the other organisations involved think it would be irresponsible to hold the event as usual. “People’s health comes first”, the organisers say. Rules are more important than the party.

Alternative

An alternative solution is still being considered. Omroep Brabant editor-in-chief, Renzo Veenstra, says, “That the start of Carnival should be celebrated is certain. But finding a way to do this responsibly is still a challenge.”

The organisation hopes that they can organise the part as usual in 2022. That’s 3 Uurkes Vurraf‘s 33rd anniversary.

Cinemas can bend new COVID-19 rules

0

There’s already an exception to the earlier closing times for restaurants and nightclubs.

Cinemas may finish screenings that started before 22:00 at 01:00, at the latest. The Eindhoven cinema, LAB – 1, enthusiastically reports this exception. The cinema has already adapted its programming.

Initially, it seemed the last movie-goers were going to have to leave the cinema before 22:00. That doesn’t appear to be the case. However, refreshment sales must stop at 22:00.

The exception is hidden in a long explanation on the Dutch government’s website. Earlier, it was already known that takeaway restaurants may be open later. They can remain so until 02:00.

But, they can’t sell alcohol after 22:00.

Museum calling on female artists

0

The Van Abbe Museum is looking for female artists and projects that are eligible for the Theodora Niemeijer Prize.

The Theodora Niemeijer Prize is an incentive prize awarded to female visual artists. The aim is to promote equality between men and women in the art world. The museum will award the woman who comes up with the best design for Het Oog (The Eye).

This is the Van Abbe Museum’s patio. It needs some visual art pieces. The winner can then actually carry out her idea.

Criteria

There are several criteria for participation. For example, the artist must be a woman and live and work in the Netherlands. She must have studied for no more than five years, and be available for the project. That’s for both the presentation and implementation of the idea.

The first prize consists of a sum of €10,000 and the realisation of the idea for the patio. The award ceremony will take place on 8 March 2021. That’s also International Women’s Day.

The event will take place while the Stichting Niemeijer Fonds celebrates its 25th anniversary. It’s the fifth time that the Fund will grant this award. Interested artists can register until the end of the year.

Registration closes on 1 January 2021.

Learn a new way of crowdsourcing

0

There is an upcoming course by GROOA called ‘Social skills for innovation crowdsourcing. It’ll provide training on developing these required skills for today’s leaders. It’ll be an online ‘live’ webinar, which will meet for seven times.

Prognya Ghosh of GROOA writes:

“The one positive thing this pandemic has given us is increased digital connectivity.”

“People can now collaborate and contribute to topics without thinking about any geographical boundaries. This digital openness has allowed a diversity of ideas and thoughts about innovation. Human leadership skills, which were mostly hierarchical in nature, were instrumental in making enormous industrial progress in the past.”

“But now, the way business is conducted is changing. More and more people are coming together to ‘crowdsource ideas,’ giving rise to a collective genius. The role of a leader isn’t only to manage and give orders but also to curate this collective ability.”

Challenges

“The challenge leaders face in such a set up is very different from traditional ones. How to differentiate between a good and a bad idea? How to courageously disagree and yet get a positive outcome?”

The online meetings by GROOA will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 19:00 to 20:00. They will be on 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27, and 29 October. The course costs €700.

Local DJ performs for care workers, but says ‘no to measures’

0

Well-known Eindhoven DJ, Lafuente, has been criticized on social media.

He’s being accused of having double standards. That’s regarding the discussion about the country’s coronavirus policy. Lafuente performed in the Philips Stadium earlier this week.

He wanted to encourage hundreds of care workers. At the same time, he’s joined a group of well-known Dutch people who want to eliminate all anti-corona measures. This group includes rapper Famke Louise, Tim Douwsma, Bizzey, and Thomas Berge.

They’re questioned the recent policy. And have asked their fans to ‘say no to all measures’. “A big f*ck you to the same care workers”, critics responded.

Just like many other artists, DJ Lafuente has suffered under the anti-corona rules’ effects. All major concerts and festivals were cancelled. The DJ went on Instagram and called attention to the Dutch events’ sector’s tough situation.

DJ Lafuente also collaborated on the video the artists posted on their social media channels.

Lots to do around Stationsplein this Sunday

0

The Eindhoven initiative Goed Plan! (Good Plan!) has devised all kinds of activities around Stationsplein for the coming weekends.

They planned these in partnership with residents. “Now that the world is opening up a little, we’d like to announce some of those good plans”, the organisers say. There’s the ‘Let’s Keep the Summer Vibe’ section.

Three afternoons will be filled with workshops, yoga and a market with homemade goodies from different parts of the world. You can visit this event on Sunday 13 September, Sunday 27 September, and Sunday 4 October from 13:00 to 20:00. Entrance is free of charge.

These events are co-hosted by the International Creative Women organisation.

Plasma X Drag-up + Citywalk

This Sunday, professional drag make-up artists will work at The Student Hotel (TSH) to transform 20 participants. At the end of the afternoon, there will be a flashmob in the streets of the city, ending up back at TSH. The fun starts at 12:30.

If you’d like to participate, you can register (for free) here. You can also get more information here.

There is also an outdoor cinema every Friday in September at 21:00. “Bring your own blanket to sit on and maybe another one to sit under when it gets chilly”. These open-air picnic films cost €6.

There will be a lot of construction work going on around Stationsplein in the coming years. To keep the area livable, Goed Plan! wants to realise several projects in the summer and autumn. They started this initiative in June.

First Monuments festival for Geldrop

0

This Sunday, Geldrop will hold its first Monumentenfestival (Monuments festival).

The Haydn Orchestra will spoil residents with classical music along the route that passes the town’s monuments. The programme starts at the Weverijmuseum (Weaving museum). Councillor Rob van Otterdijk will officially open the festival.

After that, the museum’s waterwheel’s function will be explained. Participants can then walk to Geldrop Castle’s park. Later in the day, guests can visit Brigida Church. The route ends at Hofdael centre.

During the day the sounds of Haydn, Mozart and Boccherini, among others, can be heard. The organisers describe the event as a musical programme that focuses on the three national monuments. People can visit the Monuments festival on Sunday, 13 September, from 11:00 to 17:00.

Free

After 16:15, there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy something to eat and drink. Admission is free of charge. Because of the anti-corona measures, people have to register if they want to attend one or more of the musical ‘preludes’ or the concert.

There is room for only 30 people at the Weaving Museum. But there’s no limit in the castle park. Guests just have to maintain the 1.5m distance. Brigida Church can accommodate 120 visitors.

And at the Hofdael centre, there is space for 60 people. This centre is well-ventilated (4,300 m3/h) and is, therefore,  ‘corona-proof’. To reserve seats, please send an e-mail to p.couturier.cadd@gmail.com.

Please indicate whether you want to take part in all or parts of the programme. Please visit the Geldrop-Mierlo website for more information.
