First Monuments festival for Geldrop

0

This Sunday, Geldrop will hold its first Monumentenfestival (Monuments festival).

The Haydn Orchestra will spoil residents with classical music along the route that passes the town’s monuments. The programme starts at the Weverijmuseum (Weaving museum). Councillor Rob van Otterdijk will officially open the festival.

After that, the museum’s waterwheel’s function will be explained. Participants can then walk to Geldrop Castle’s park. Later in the day, guests can visit Brigida Church. The route ends at Hofdael centre.

During the day the sounds of Haydn, Mozart and Boccherini, among others, can be heard. The organisers describe the event as a musical programme that focuses on the three national monuments. People can visit the Monuments festival on Sunday, 13 September, from 11:00 to 17:00.

Free

After 16:15, there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy something to eat and drink. Admission is free of charge. Because of the anti-corona measures, people have to register if they want to attend one or more of the musical ‘preludes’ or the concert.

There is room for only 30 people at the Weaving Museum. But there’s no limit in the castle park. Guests just have to maintain the 1.5m distance. Brigida Church can accommodate 120 visitors.

And at the Hofdael centre, there is space for 60 people. This centre is well-ventilated (4,300 m3/h) and is, therefore,  ‘corona-proof’. To reserve seats, please send an e-mail to p.couturier.cadd@gmail.com.

Please indicate whether you want to take part in all or parts of the programme. Please visit the Geldrop-Mierlo website for more information.

Effenaar fires more than half its staff

0

The Effenaar has had to let 45 out of its 81 people go. That’s a result of the corona crisis. This includes both permanent and temporary employees.

“It’s unavoidable,” Effenaar director, Jos Feijen, says. “Every week we only have one or two small concerts with 100 visitors. Normally, we’d now have plenty of sold-out concerts with 1,200 visitors. The financial impact is enormous.”

The music hall usually organises around 300 programmes a year. This year that will be 70, at most. The Effenaar is, however, responding to the corona crisis.

Isolation sessions

It’s holding about 200 ‘isolation sessions’ – live concerts that can be watched via the internet. But, this is a free event, so it doesn’t generate extra income for the music venue. The current restrictions make it impossible to run an economically sound business.

Feijen expects the current stage restrictions to remain in place well into 2021. “The Effenaar is anticipating this. We’re, therefore, reducing the number of employees to a small, decisive team.”

“These people will run the limited number of available programmes. We’ll that be able to scale up quickly,” adds Jos,” as soon as the restrictive measures are lifted.”

‘Losing know-how’

“It pains me to have these talks with all the employees. With this many people leaving the organisation, we’re also losing a lot of knowledge and experience. But we aren’t going to sit back and do nothing.”

“We’re seizing the opportunity to look ahead with a fresh perspective. We must plan for the post-COVID 19 era,” the director says. The events industry has already said it would go under without government intervention.

Carnaval organisers share doubts and challenges

0

The organisers of the yearly Lampegatse (Eindhoven) Carnaval are contemplating whether the event will take place next year. “We are trying to think of a safe alternative, however the current limitations make it challenging.”

A celebration where all tables are positioned to maintain adequate distancing? Should it move online? Alternatively, Carnaval is postponed to summer in the hopes of a vaccine by that time. Tim de Zeeuw thinks aloud about the possibilities for the event to take place within the next six months. He is chairman of the Carnaval association d’Hoane and an organiser of Elluf Elluf, an event signalling the kick-off of the Carnaval season in Eindhoven.

The problems

“We haven’t made a decision yet, but the eleventh of the eleventh is fast approaching. We have to guarantee safety. We’re considering alternatives, tables spaced to maintain distancing. That presents it’s own challenges, especially when alcohol is involved,” explains De Zeeuw. The event in February also poses a problem. Before the main event, a smaller event at the Stadspaviljoen takes place. Usually with an estimated 800 people in attendance and 18 bands performing. It entails a lot of singing, dancing and drinking. Not exactly corona-proof. I don’t know how we’re going to organise it. Everything that makes a celebration fun is becoming more difficult to organise.”

Time pressure

Ivo Soetens, the chairman of the Eindhoven Carnaval Federation, is also concerned. If Carnaval can take place, how would it happen? His organisation is amongst others responsible for events in the main tent on Market Square, the parade and the Federation Ball, where the new city prince is announced. “Preferably, one would wait as long as possible to know what you’re in for. The anti-corona virus measures are still changing and the Regional Safety organisation (Veiligheidsregio Zuid-Oost Brabant) hasn’t made a decision regarding Carnaval yet. Unfortunately, we can’t wait too long as everyone involved must start with preparations.”

Agenda

The Eindhoven municipality reports that Carnaval is on the agenda at Regional Safety. It’s unclear when a decision will be made. Soetens: “It depends on the event, how many considerations are involved in the organisation. For the large-scale events, we certainly need to know by the middle of September.”

If necessary,  postpone to summer

It still is very uncertain. Behind the scenes many meetings are scheduled, also amongst the federations and the municipality. Soetens and De Zeeuw are convinced that Carnaval will be celebrated next year. Even if it’s on a smaller scale that usual. “History shows that Carnaval often happens spontaneously. During the war, Carnaval was also celebrated,” says Soetens. De Zeeuw: “If necessary, we could postpone it to summer in the hope that a vaccine becomes available in the winter or spring.

Not just any great meal

0

A few weeks ago, disaster struck in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. On 4 August, a massive explosion ripped through the city.

A fire had broken out in the port. That led to stored ammonium nitrate exploding. This caused between 180 and 200 deaths. It left 6,000 people injured and an estimated 300,000 homeless.

And although that city is thousands of kilometres from Eindhoven, people here want to do their bit to help those in need. So, on Friday evening, Minyoung Korean Food Lab held an unusual dinner – the Support Beirut food event. Guests were served a special three-course meal of Korean/Lebanese fusion dishes.

These dishes included Kimchi Kibbeh and Tabbouleh with a Korean garlic chilli tofu topping. The idea is the brainchild of Micheline Nahra and Mohamad Kanaan. They’re both Lebanese artists and designers based in Eindhoven.

An immediate ‘yes’

“Micheline contacted me to ask for help with a fund-raising idea for Beirut,” says Minyoung, who founded the Food Lab. “I immediately accepted it. Micheline is one of those passionate people who don’t hesitate to organise this kind of event. We both believe small steps can be a big step.”

Minyoung came to Eindhoven in 2014 to study at the Design Academy. She founded the Foodlab in 2017. “It started as an experimental dining event based on a young designer’s work,” Minyoung explains. The Minyoung Korean Food Lab is in the TAC.

“I use food as a medium to give draw attention to their design and connect with people,” says Minyoung. The Food Lab is meant to connect the general public and the design/art world.” And it did so much more than that last week.

This single dining experience raised between €800 and €850 for the Beirut Red Cross.

Local cleric to return to India

The Nicasius parish bid farewell to Father Mervin Varayankunnel on Sunday. This was during an open-air mass.

Father Varayankunnel served the Heeze-Leende and Geldrop-Mierlo communities. His congregation saw him off during the celebration of the Assumption of Mary celebration. This year, the church held this in its garden.

The Catholic priest will be returning to India. There, he will run a care centre for people with social and psychological problems. Father Mervin arrived in Heeze in 2014.

Should’ve be gone already

A year later his work began in the Nicasius parish. The priest was supposed to have returned to India in May already. The coronavirus global pandemic, however, threw a spanner in those works.

He’s had to postpone his farewell several times already. It’s still unclear when the Father will actually leave for India. Dozens of people gathered, 1.5m apart, on Sunday to say goodbye.

“I am going to miss him very much. But he misses his family in India too,” one of the guests said. Father Varayankunnel is going to use the parishioners’ contributions to help people in India. They will grow fruit and vegetables, and so earn a living.

This year’s Kersenoogstfeest (Cherry Harvest Festival) in Mierlo has been cancelled.

That’s why the organisers want to make the next one big. The well-known Dutch singer, Frans Bauer, will perform there. He will perform on Molenplein, along with the band, Tilt.

The concert will be on Saturday, 5 June 2021. But, the festival runs for three days, from 4 to 6 June. Tickets for the show can be bought in advance.

They cost €5,00 – including 2 consumption vouchers. Otherwise, it’s free entrance.

FeelGood Market cancelled due to heat

0

Sunday’s FeelGood Market is cancelled due to the heat. Organisers state that they received too many cancellations from vendors who say the weather will be too hot.

‘We feel compelled to cancel the FeelGood Market on 9 August,’ organisers say. ‘Too many vendors who were going to participate do not consider the weather forecast appropriate for their products and/or themselves. Due to coronavirus measures, installing water pools to cool down is not very hygienic or in line with the 1.5 metre distance rule.’ All in all, they say, ‘we think we should cancel this edition’.

No cultural grant for these two

0

From next year, two local cultural companies won’t get a subsidy from the government.

They are TROMP Percussion Festival and dance company, United Cowboys. A number of other cultural institutions will receive a subsidy. That’s what the National Fund Performing Arts has decided.

The fund received applications from all over the Netherlands for subsidies for the period 2021 – 2024. It then issued an opinion on the applications.

Every two years, TROMP Percussion organises a competition and festival for classical solo percussion in Eindhoven. According to the fund, there is little artistic collaboration at the festival. TROMP is currently still receiving a subsidy from the fund. It’s not yet known how the gap will be filled.

First time

The United Cowboys dance company organises visual arts and dance performances. The fund hasn’t awarded any subsidy for this. None of the projects the company submitted gives any indication about what the public will see. It was, however, the first time that United Cowboys applied to the fund.

The Jazz event, What’s Next Eindhoven, will receive a subsidy of €37,500. Afslag Eindhoven, which performs theatre on location, will receive a subsidy of €125,000. The Ruggeds dance company will also receive an amount of €125,000.

According to Studio040, TROMP Percussion and United Cowboys were unavailable for comment on Tuesday afternoon.
