Award winning documentary premieres at The Student Hotel

This Is Love will be making its Dutch premiere on June 6th 2019 at 20:00, as part of DOCfeed’s programming at The Student Hotel in Eindhoven. The film was partially shot in the Netherlands, and the Dutch premiere will be followed by a Q&A with producers JC Guest & Shawn Rhodes, and director John Alexander.

This Is Love features Fox TV comedian Sinbad, ABC star Marsai Martin, the king of funk George Clinton and Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac). It swept film festivals around the world, winning the Spirit Award in London, Best International Documentary in Rome, and Best Feature Documentary in Mexico.

The documentary introduces obscure soul singer Rudy Love, whose name the public does not know but whose voice and songs they almost certainly have heard. It is about an artist who turned down fame to make music with his family. His work was seemingly all lost, until it shows up on the other side of the world. “I’m mostly in it to make music, which has been my downfall for many years,” Rudy intones during one of his many reminisces during the documentary.

Tickets for the screening cost €5 and are available through this Eventbrite link.

There are free tickets available for readers of Eindhoven News. Enter code ‘EHVNEWS’ during the checkout procedure to claim your free ticket!

One person’s junk is another’s functional object

0

The Kazerne Home of Design is organising a collection campaign for the recently graduated design-talent, Baiba Soma.

For her graduation from the Design Academy, Soma made beautiful new items and remarkable design objects from discarded goods. These included electricity cables, fridge-doors, and washing machine parts. “My aim is to show the beauty of discarded products by transforming them into new, functional objects,” explains Baiba.

A lamp and a tapestry from Soma’s “Expired Whites” series are part of Kazerne’s current Circular Materialists exhibition. Both leading and starting design talents show how they deal with the contradictory theme of sustainable design. The exhibition is on until Tuesday, 3 March.

Donate unwanted goods

Donations for Baiba’s works are welcome until the very last day of the exhibition. They can be brought to Kazerne, in Paradijslaan, Eindhoven. The show is open every day from noon and entrance is free.

At the end of the exhibition, from 17:30 to 19:00, there will a workshop. For €5, visitors, under the supervision of the designer, can transform the yield of the collection campaign. These can be transformed into unique lamps, wallhangings and other design pieces. If you are interested in this, please buy tickets here.

Singing along at the top of your lungs at Levenslied Eindhoven

Not one, but two days of loud singing at ‘Levenslied’ (song of life) Eindhoven.

On the 26th and 27th of August, numerous artists will bring an ode to the sentimental song. National artists like Monique Smit and the Gebroeders Ko and regional and local artists like Ferry de Lits and Django Wagner will perform on the Stadhuisplein.

Just like previous times, an enormous crowd is expected. At that time the organisation had to close the gates because of the crowds. When the maximum number of visitors has been reached, the principle is one in, one out. Visitors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Admission is free again this year. Here you can find more info.

Glow is back with its yearly light art festival

0

It has become a tradition for many visitors: walking the Glow light art route in November. This weekend it was once again busy in the Eindhoven city centre. The light artworks are appreciated by many. “The colours, the music… it’s beautiful.

The event has grown from 45,000 visitors during the first edition of GLOW in 2006, to a record number of more than 750,000 visitors during the 2019 pre-Covid edition. As a result, GLOW Eindhoven is now one of the top five most visited light festivals in the world.

A five-kilometre route meanders past 33 light artworks by students and designers. Small installations in almost invisible places alternate with huge projections on the most famous buildings in the city. The route runs through the station to the Catharinakerk and past the Van Abbemuseum.

Audio tour

Light is a sign of hope, wonder and connection. The theme, Urban Skin, was chosen to highlight this collaboration and connection between art and Eindhoven. The artworks change the appearance of the city center in Eindhoven. Something new this year, which reinforces this motivation, is the audio tour . Artists tell the story behind their work in their own, often humorous, way. This reduces the distance between art and viewer.

Energy saving

Due to the energy crisis, the event will dim the lights an hour earlier from Monday to Thursday. There will also be two light installations on the Anne Frankplantsoen that are completely CO2 neutral. The organisors are doing everything possible to make the event as sustainable as possible. They also expect the cooperation and help of their visitors.

‘If everyone who comes to see the works of art turns off one light at home, we can together ensure an energy-neutral event.’

Suzanne Maas, project manager GLOW

The light festival will be on until Saturday, 19th November.

Torchlight procession for tolerance

0

It is beginning to become a time-honoured tradition. Since 1992, thousands walk through the Eindhoven city centre carrying lit torches on Christmas Eve.  This Saturday evening drew thousands, a long procession of citizens who had joined to express their desire for peace and inclusion.

City poet Iris Penning read a poem and sang a song on the Wilhelminaplein stage before the procession  went under way.  Scouting group Johannes Vianney carried the Light of Peace, the flame they had brought from Vienna. Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem emphasised the idea behind the procession: an opportunity to devote thought to the importance of tolerance, acceptance and repect.

What prompted the initiative 30 years ago?

After all, the procession was initiated in 1992 after a spate of attacks on migrants by right-wing extremists in several places in Europe. In 1993, an attack on Turkish migrants in the German city of Solingen killed five girls and women.

Dijsselbloem also emphasised the importance of speaking out, of standing up against intolerance and making one’s voice heard. He mentioned the incident in Someren last month, where arsonists set fire to a planned refugee shelter for asylum seekers.

Labyrinth in Philips de Jonghpark: a posthumous gift from DJ Lady Aïda

A labyrinth of legendary Eindhoven techno DJ Lady Aïda will be unveiled in Eindhoven’s Philips de Jonghpark on Sunday. The artwork is her parting gift to the city. Lady Aïda died in 2021 as a result of breast cancer.

A maze with a circumference of 55 metres and up to 17 metres wide. That is the physical part of the artwork left to the city by the DJ – who was born with the name Aïda Spaninks. The stones of the artwork are laid in the grass so that walkers can walk along the paths. Soon to be added are a kind of radio play composed by various sound artists.

The work was financed with money from the proceeds of Aïda’s record collection and a contribution from the Stichting Cultuur Eindhoven (Eindhoven culture foundation). The opening begins Sunday at 15:00; those interested can register by sending an e-mail to projecten@rebelbass.com.

Liberator of Eindhoven Joe Cattini surprised with two awards: ‘That’s too much honor’

Turning 100 is already special, but for Briton Joe Cattini that milestone got an extra twist. One of the last remaining liberators of Eindhoven was surprised on his birthday with two awards by a delegation from the city he liberated. “That’s too much honor.”

Not only has Cattini been named an honorary citizen of the city, he is also the winner of the very first Local Hero Award.

Surprise

In the company of friends and family, Cattini celebrated his 100th birthday in his homeland last Tuesday. It was actually the intention that the Briton would be at a concert specially organized for him in Eindhoven a few days earlier, but he had to miss out due to his fragile health.

So an Eindhoven delegation traveled to England to put him in the spotlight, and not without reason. In September 1944, as a young boy, Cattini fought to liberate Eindhoven from the Nazis. That this was not devoid of dangers, is once again apparent from the speech of mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem.

“Joe Cattini was on the front line time and time again. He was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. His friend next to him was fatally injured by shrapnel, but Joe was not injured.”

The war continued

Cattini is not only praised for his struggle on the battlefield, but also for his efforts after the war. For the British, the Second World War did not end after the collapse of the Third Reich in May 1945.

Cattini has regularly visited Eindhoven in recent years. He attended the traditional torch parade last September and visited schools to pass on the story of the war to new generations. “That was always one of the conditions when he came to the Netherlands,” explains the chairman of the 18 September Foundation, Peter Kemp. “He insisted on going to schools to tell his story.”

Honorary citizen

Cattini has been rewarded with two awards for his participation in the bloody battle for the Eindhoven region and his unbridled commitment to make young people understand the value of freedom. He has been granted honorary citizenship of the city. This brings the Englishman to an illustrious list that includes football coach Guus Hiddink, swimmer Pieter van den Hoogenband and former mayors Rein Welschen and Rob van Gijzel.

The Local Hero Award was also presented to Cattini. He is the namesake and face of that prize. From now on, every two years, the award will be given to a young person who has shown exceptional drive and determination for a cause, belief or individual, despite setbacks.

This new Eindhoven coffee shop is partly run by people with dementia

At first glance, Smaakmakers in Woensel-West seems like your average coffee shop, but it isn’t. In this newly opened business people with dementia help in the operation. A group of vulnerable people, who are close to the heart of the owners.

The family behind Smaakmakers was itself affected by the disease. Founder Jolande Verbakel experienced up close how her father dealt with the consequences of dementia. However, he wasn’t the type to give up. “My father still wanted to be important,” explains Jolande. However, that turned out to be easier said than done. “Many things that are organized for people with dementia do not suit everyone. My father didn’t want to do crafts or shuffleboard, but still be useful.”

From workshop to coffee shop

It didn’t give her the idea to start a coffee shop yet. That only came later through her daughter and co-founder, Melissa de Laat. She worked in dementia care and organized cooking workshops for people suffering from the disease. The blissful reactions of participants left a taste for more. “I wanted to do something like this more often,” Melissa begins. Brainstorming began. “At first I thought about a catering company, but in the end I decided to start my own coffee shop together with my mother, who worked in the catering industry.”

Smaakmakers became reality through a crowdfunding campaign. The pair raised more than forty thousand euros. The opening of the coffee shop on Edisonplein took place last Saturday. With their own company, the two hope to get people with dementia out of the doldrums.

“You notice in people who are diagnosed that they become very passive, because they think they can no longer do something.” Her daughter adds: “Of course the disease will get worse, but we focus on the period before that. When they can still do a lot.”

Employee of the first hour

An employee (with dementia) from the very beginning is Ellie. She has only had a few working days, but she can no longer live without the company. “It’s very nice here. I don’t want to leave here,” she says with a smile on her face. “I do all kinds of things. For example, if I see something lying around, I clean it up.”

One thing the employees suffering from amnesia are not allowed to do is take orders. This is done via a QR code or at the cash register. “We don’t want it to be too stressful for them. It’s also okay if they bring an order to the wrong table. We also count on a little understanding from the guests.”
