Thousands of students in Eindhoven for introduction week

Singing songs, playing games and of course lots of partying. The introduction week started again in Eindhoven on Monday. Thousands of Fontys and TU/e students are participating. “I’m especially looking forward to getting to know my fellow students”, a young man said.

It is still quiet on Monday morning at the Fontys campsite. The future students are still seeing which way the cat jumps. Coloured shirts walk back and forth between the tents. Some youngsters are still busy inflating their air beds. It’s up to the so called “moms and dads” (focal points consisting of students) to bring in the party atmosphere.

“They’ve only just gotten to know each other, of course”, an attendant explains. “And of course it doesn’t help either that drinking is only allowed from 16:00”.

Still, even without alcohol, the students slowly begin to loosen up. Several songs are sung by the counselors about Julia’s breasts and a duckling. Meanwhile, the students are hooking up. “I thought they did well for a first day”, Joris reflects.

TU/e

A quiet start is also made on the TU/e grounds. The students play games together. For example, the mechanical engineers of the future have to make something out of duct tape. However, the introduction week is not only about games and partying.

It is also a chance to get to know the program and fellow students. “For me, it is successful when they have seen that being a student will be one of the highlights of their lives”.

Tribute to first female counsellor

Few know who she is, Janna van Bekkum-van Gorkum. Yet she has been of great significance in Eindhoven. She was the first woman on the city council exactly 100 years ago. Her great-granddaughter and the municipality are now reflecting on that.

Van Bekkem-van Gorkum was a member of the municipal council from 1923 to 1926, not long after women’s suffrage was introduced. She was an ambitious woman. In addition to political work for the Social Democratic Workers’ Party (SDAP), she was also the mother of four children in a socialist family.

Pride

“I am very proud of my great-grandmother. It was very special what she did, in a real man’s world at the time. I am proud of her ideas, perseverance and ambition. She was also a very sweet mother,” says great-grandchild Inge Wessels.

Eindhoven – the new hub for the Indian startups

Diplomatic relations between India and the Netherlands was established in 1947 and has been cordial and friendly ever since. In the more recent past, trade and investment have become the dominant themes in their bilateral ties. Today, the Netherlands is a significant trade and investment partner of India.

This partnership got a tremendous boost as the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, paid a state visit to India on 24 and 25 May. This visit sought to maximise the potential of the economic and commercial partnership between the two countries. It was a high-level business delegation comprising of four cabinet ministers, 125 companies representatives, and about 220 business participants that focused on strengthening the relations in agriculture, smart cities, healthcare, water management, and Research and Technology.

Lars de Vries, Senior Project Manager, India (BOM Foreign Investments), which is based in Eindhoven,  joined Prime Minister Rutte on his visit to India for the largest Trade mission ever. His company recognises Eindhoven as a hub for Indian companies. We believe in cooperation and our region has a strong connection with India. With the city of Eindhoven being the hometown of Philips, which has also been present in India for the past 100 years, many IT companies have found their business relations with the front-runners in co-creation,’ he explains.

Eindhoven, as we know, is home to over 140 companies and institutions, comprising over 10.000 product developers, researchers, and entrepreneurs and an estimated 85 nationalities. Global companies in the Brainport region like NXP and TOMTOM have a long-standing and committed histories with India. Eindhoven, which is rated as the smartest region in the world, focusses on high tech, mobility, and design. “A few examples of companies from Brabant that joined this mission are Litevax, Eindhoven Medical Robotics, NXP, PAL-V, Schouten Europe, and MTD. Many relevant people from the Indo-Dutch network joined this mission, such as the NICCT, Assocham, as well as my acquisition colleagues from Rotterdam Partners, The Hague Business, and Amsterdam in Business,’ adds Mr De Vries.

He also mentions that the Dutch business environment is conductive for start-ups. “The Eindhoven company, Eindhoven Medical Robotics, is a great example of this. It provides advanced knowledge and technologies, assisting surgeons to do the impossible with their RoboSculpt, which has the ability to navigate autonomously during high precision bone surgery. A very promising technology start-up, which intends to ramp up to a 1.000+ people team, utilising the collaborative R&D network between the Netherlands and India, using the scale of the market that India offers.”

Anupam Nayak and Jordan Bos from Eindhoven Medical Robotics were also invited by RVO to join the Dutch trade mission to India. Together with their team, they have an ambitious plan to make EM Robotics a world leader in high precision surgical robots. They have a partnership agreement with TU/e. “Igniting young minds of surgeons by training them with the latest in technology and giving them an opportunity to join us back here in Eindhoven, also opens up diverse avenues for future educational and business collaborations,” Anupam explains. Anupam is the COO of Eindhoven Medical Robotics and founded the company along with Prof. Maarten Steinbuch. “Currently, all engineering and manufacturing are located in Eindhoven with pre-clinical tests and human trials being set up worldwide,” she informs us with enthusiasm. She earnestly believes that, “The power of joining forces with the Dutch initiatives in India will surely enable us to expand our presence in the fastest growing healthcare markets of the world.”

More and more Dutch people are choosing to start a business in emerging markets such as India. They do this not only because there are many economic opportunities there, but also because this is stimulated by the government.

Indian startups have registered notable growth in sectors like Fintech, logistics, medical science, and e-commerce. “Out of the 200 Indian companies in the Netherlands, our small region hosts almost 30 companies from India including the large corporates like Wipro, Infosys BPO, Cognizant, Tata Steel Tubes, RF Solutions, Banco Products, and many other small and innovative firms like Forthcode, and Intech DMLS which are now expanding to Eindhoven,’ explains Mr de Vries. “During this Trade mission, I focused on meeting as many Indian companies with a presence in Brabant, who have current projects and new companies that might be interested in establishing in our region. We wanted to make sure that we became recognised as a hub for Indian companies. ”

Professor Bert Meijer wins the Van ‘t Hoff medal 2022

The medal is awarded once every ten years for outstanding and groundbreaking work in the field of chemistry, excluding biochemistry. Bert Meijer is the second recipient ever. The prize was first awarded in 2011.

”I am very honoured.”-Bert Meijer

Meijer happily shares “I see it as a wonderful appreciation for the research that the many students, PhD students and postdocs in our group have carried out over the decades.”

Meijer receives the prize because he has been working on stereochemistry for many years. He introduced the chemical form, which made him world-renowned. Stereochemistry is the study of the spatial structure of compounds and molecules and the consequences of how substances react to each other. With this contribution, Meijer more than met the criteria to receive the medal. The winner’s work must therefore be excellent and groundbreaking.

Rightful winner

According to the jury chairman Wybren Jan Buma. ”Meijer is regarded worldwide as one of the founders in his field. His work has pioneered the mechanisms underlying chemical self-assembly. He has shown that these materials offer unique opportunities to successfully develop solutions.”

Medal

The medal is named after the Dutch chemist JH van ‘t Hoff. The Dutch chemist won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1901. The first winner of this award, Ben Feringa, went on to win a Nobel Prize in 2016.  As a result of the pandemic, the ceremony took place a year later than planned.

School raises money for Giro555 with Turkish delicacies

The playground of primary school ‘t Slingertouw in Meerhoven is full of tables with Turkish delicacies on Wednesday afternoon. In this way, the school wants to collect money for victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

It’s set up in three days, and the tables are full of food. “Everyone is so involved. When I came up with the idea, everyone was already ready,” says Sultan Tuter-Deniz, one of the organizers of the event who works at the school. “More than forty mothers have registered. They really wanted to make something and donate the money.”

Children

Not only the parents of the students want to help, the children themselves are also very involved. “The children themselves had already started collecting bottles, baking cupcakes, you name it. All kinds of initiatives. Then we decided to do something together as a school,” says Sultan Tuter-Deniz.

‘t Slingertouw is an international school. Many children have a Turkish background. “I’m Turkish myself and so many people died there,” says a young student. “I want to help them as much as possible,” he says. Another young girl also thinks it’s important to help. “It’s so bad that people are in danger there and we’re just playing here,” she says about why she thinks it’s so important to raise money.

Tasty

The delicacies are sure to please. Groups of people are waiting at each table to buy some food. “It’s a good way to raise money,” says a parent who has already bought some treats. “We have good food, and the victims of the earthquake receive money for help. It is an important goal.”

On Wednesday, a national campaign via Giro555 will be used to collect money for victims of the disaster all day long. You can donate via this website.

New Mayor: ‘Son and Breugel suits us’

A fresh wind is blowing through Son en Breugel since new Mayor Suzanne Otters-Bruijnen took office. Soon she will move from Vught with her husband and four children  to settle in her new municipality.

Suzanne Otters-Bruijnen is the successor to Hans Gailard who was Mayor of Son en Breugel for the past twenty years. Both VVD politicians, but Otters-Bruijnen does have a different style. “My focus is also on women in top positions. I want to set an example for other women and girls, to show how they can develop. I am also focused on young people, just like the city council, I want to involve young people in decision making”. The latter will sometimes be quite a challenge, since there are not many young people to be seen out and about in Son en Breugel..

The new Mayor has an immaculate career in public administration behind her, apart from a faux pas: a tweet she posted about six years ago. When theme park De Efteling was discredited because of the alleged racist theme behind its attractions, Otters-Bruijnen tweeted a photo of her dessert: ‘white custard with negro kisses’.* It was intended to support the Efteling, but it was not to everyone’s liking. The tweet brought Otters-Bruijnen a lot of comments. Both negative and positive comments, by the way.

Brainport Region

Son en Breugel has both the green village character and the economic activity. A versatility that Otters is proud of. “This gives Son en Breugel something unique. I am from Waalre myself, also a municipality with an active club life and a clear link to the Brainport Region. The success of this region is the cooperation between the various municipalities. If we can be in touch with each other and together achieve the things we want to achieve with regards to the societal challenges, that is wonderful”.

* Before 2005, the offensive name ‘Negroes’ kisses’ was used for a certain type of  confectionary. Since 2005, they have been called ‘Chocolate kisses’, or simply ‘Kisses’. Explanation added by Greta for EN, with apologies.

Organisation Sinterklaashuis Eindhoven needs volunteers

0

For the fifth year in a row, children and their parents are welcome to visit the Sinterklaashuis in Eindhoven. From the end of next week, they can not only meet Saint Nicholas and his Pieten here, but also take part in all kinds of fun activities. At least, if the organising foundation manages to find enough volunteers.

Because this is a big problem, says Olof van Gelder, chairman of Stichting Sinterklaashuis Eindhoven. “It will be the last time in the Steentjeskerk anyway, but we are already working on another location. So it would be very sad if we are forced to stop because we have too few volunteers.”

Helping hands

Helping hands are sought in many areas: in catering, in the volunteer room, but also several helpers and even an assistant Saint Nicholas are needed. Van Gelder: “Otherwise the whole party simply cannot take place and we have to disappoint thousands of children. During the week, we manage to get help from Summacollege. But especially on weekends, when most visitors come in, we have a problem.”

Chinese New Year celebrated in Eindhoven

0

Chinese New Year in Eindhoven? It was celebrated with a traditional Lions’ or Dragons’ dance. And by serving and eating lots of special dishes!

This year is called the year of the Pig or Boar. The Chinese zodiac has twelve animal-signs, which change per Chinese year.

Myths

It seems, the Jade Emperor said the order in which the zodiac cycle was to be decided, would be the order in which the invited animals would arrive at his party. According to one story, Pig was late because he overslept.

Though another myth mentions, Wolf destroyed the Boar’s home. So Pig or Boar, had to rebuild his home first. Only then did he set off for the Emperor’s party. Of course, he arrived last and had to be content with twelfth place in the cycle.

Traditions

Regardless: Saturday, Chinese New Year was enthusiastically welcomed in Eindhoven. The centre of festivities was at the Eindhoven shop of Asian supermarket chain “Amazing Oriental”, at Langdonkenstraat 7. Events, free tasting sessions and Asian cooking shows are regularly organized at the shops of this chain.

The traditional Lions’ or Dragons’ dance is often accompanied by lighting fire-crackers. The dances are performed through streets and in front of shops, to chase away evil spirits and bless the area. Moreover, small red bags or envelopes containing money are also distributed.

According to one of the visitors watching the spectacle: “It’s nice to see how other cultures celebrate and welcome a New Year!”.

Thousands of Chinese call Eindhoven their home and celebrated their New Year in style. The growing high-tech sector ensures many people from Asian countries now live in the city. They share their traditions, celebrations, festivals with everybody else in Eindhoven.

Born in the year of the Boar or Pig and being teased about “oversleeping”? Remind your friends: in Chinese culture, pigs are the symbol of wealth and good fortune. Provided you believe in astrology, of course.

No skating rink in town, but tall gift tower

Anyone who has looked around Eindhoven’s 18 Septemberplein has probably noticed something. Since this week there is a real gift tower. With the initiative, entrepreneurs’ association Stichting Binnenstad Eindhoven (foundation downtown Eindhoven, SBE) wants to attract more people to the city centre.

It is something else than the traditional Christmas market. In this way, the SBE still wants to end the year in a festive way with the “Wrap up the Year” campaign. “In Eindhoven, we are always a bit stubborn. The city will be wrapped up with Eindhoven gift paper this December, so to speak”, Mariette Vetter of SBE explains.

Eyecatcher
According to Vetter, the ten-metre-high gift tower financed by entrepreneurs themselves is therefore intended as an eye-catcher to direct people to the stores. “You can see the structure standing from a great distance, for example when coming from the train station. You can’t go inside the tower, although two parcels contain viewing boxes with a winter landscape”.

Skating rink
Within the “Wrap up the Year” campaign, there is no room for a Christmas market and ice skating rink. “We thought that was a bit outdated and therefore not appropriate for Eindhoven. The Christmas atmosphere will certainly be there with lighting, colourful shop windows, a music programme and other activities in the city. Something we wanted to implement before, but was resisted by the corona virus”, Vetter said.

According to Vetter, the energy crisis has nothing to do with these innovative plans, although that of course plays a role. “An ice rink naturally guzzles energy, so we don’t have that cost this year. Although we are putting more money into the mood lighting than other years because of the energy crisis”.
