City breathes guitar music during Bridge Festival

Many guitar sounds came your way during the third edition of Bridge Guitar Festival. For five days, Eindhoven was the mecca for guitar lovers. “It’s more than an instrument. It’s a feeling”.

The city as the stage for a large guitar festival, which attracted 23,000 visitors last year. According to Tom Ketelaar of organiser Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, it doesn’t come out of the blue. “Eindhoven is traditionally a rock city for a reason. I think we still are. Even if you look at the share of local and regional bands that perform at the festival. The guitar has become an indispensable part of it”.

Small and big names

More than 90 musicians performed throughout the city. In Muziekgebouw, but also on Wilhelminaplein and in LAB-1. From rock, jazz, metal and world music to classical music, with guitars. From musicians who are at the beginning of their careers to established names such as guitarist Dweezil Zappa, son of the late world star Frank Zappa. There was also a guitar fair and top guitarists gave masterclasses to visitors.

This wide range was a reason for visitors to come from far and wide. “I’m from London”, one visitor says. “I’m from Ghent”, another adds. “I’m here with the dad of one of my best friends, for Living Colour. The first time I’m going to see them live. He’s a huge fan and I’m a guitarist myself. So I thought, that can only be fun”.

Initiators reluctantly agree to location of Son war memorial

“It was bend or break,” says Arie Donck, one of the initiators of the war memorial in honour of the historic Bailey bridge in Son en Breugel, about the municipality’s proposal. The village council wants to place the memorial at the pond on the Europalaan. “It was this or no permit.”

The initiators would have preferred the monument to be placed at the canal bridge (where the Bailey bridge was built in 1944, ed.), but according to Donck they had no choice. “It was either the pond or the permit would be withdrawn. So the new location was simply imposed on us. The reasons why it cannot be in the place we wanted are nonsense.”

‘Liar’

Donck calls the responsible alderman Jan Boersma a ‘liar’. “You can write this down without any problem. He gives all sorts of fallacies as to why we cannot place our memorial at the canal bridge. Take the cables and pipes for example, they are indeed there. But I have reported this to the Cables and Pipes Information Centre myself and they see no obstacle to placing our monument.”

Other foundation

According to the initiator, there is enough space. “We also offered to have a different foundation made, so that the monument can stand on the ground. Instead of a foundation that has to be in the ground. We also spoke with Rijkswaterstaat, as the owner of the pipes, about a place in the green. This was certainly negotiable, but the municipality simply ignored it.”

In a letter to the VVD, Voor U! and D66 factions, which recently submitted questions to the municipal council, the municipality emphasises that ‘the public space at the intended location is needed in the short term for the construction and development of the F50 cycle route and the associated redevelopment of the public space’.

Furthermore, the municipality foresees problems with traffic safety. ‘It is already a busy area and placing this monument will cause even more distraction and many visitors’, as can be read in the letter. This is reason enough for the municipality not to allow the placement of the monument at the ‘ideal location’ and to choose the pond on the Europalaan.

Alternative location

According to Donck, the initiators also suggested an alternative location: “On the Nieuwstraat, just over the bridge at the canal. Where the tree was also planted for a centenarian resident of Son en Breugel. We were prepared to talk to the family to see if they would have any objections, but this was not necessary, because this location was also rejected by the municipality.”

So the initiators reluctantly agreed to ‘the pond’. “I have consulted with a number of people who say ‘go ahead, because otherwise you will soon have no location at all’. Even though the monument will now be at a location that has nothing to do with the construction of the Bailey Bridge.”

There is another problem: the costs of re-paving the terrain and placing the monument. The municipality is placing these with the ‘applicants’. Donck: “We have no money at all, so I don’t know who is going to pay this amount. So who is going to pay those seven thousand euros is not yet clear. When mayor Galjaard was still here, we didn’t have all this nonsense!”

Response from the municipality

The municipality does not respond to Donck’s allegations. However, a spokeswoman does say: “Council questions have been asked about the memorial monument before. This information is public and can be viewed by everyone. The memorial monument and its placement have also been discussed several times and in different ways.”

According to the municipal spokesperson, there has been frequent contact with those involved and various locations have been suggested and investigated. “Ultimately, the current location, accepted by the initiators, was chosen. The monument will soon be placed here. The permit for this has now been granted.”

Bailey bridge

The famous bailey bridge was a temporary bridge over the wilhelmina canal. The structure was built in a short time by the allied troops. Military vehicles could also drive over it.

This was necessary because the Germans had blown up the regular bridge at Son. This thwarted the advance of the Allies. With the rapid construction of the Bailey Bridge, the Americans were able to cross the canal after all.

Teenage girls learn to weld

Sparks, heat and bright light. Welding is mainly a male profession. Yet there are also plenty of women who enjoy it. Eight girls from various secondary schools in the region demonstrated this on Wednesday at the Summa College. It is an initiative of 15-year-old Steffi and her father Marc. “Women can sometimes even do this better.”

Steffi Mantz first heard about welding at the age of 8 and was immediately interested. And not only Steffi felt something for it, but also her father Marc. Together they therefore organised a series of lessons to learn to weld well. And seven other teenage girls also joined in, to take lessons at the Summa College.

Male profession

Despite the fact that welding is known as a male profession, it doesn’t stop the young ladies. “When I walked in here for the first time, there were all these men on the stairs, smoking a bit. I thought: oh, what am I walking into now”, says Esmee van Ooijen, one of the girls who takes the lessons. Steffi thinks it’s a shame that many people think it’s a male thing: “Women can do it just as well and sometimes even better, because women are often more precise and accurate.”

Hobby

Whether the ladies will continue after the lessons is the question: “I don’t think I would do it as a profession, but more as a hobby,” says Esmee laughing. “I don’t know if I want to be a welder, but I know for sure that I want to do something in metal technology,” says Steffi.

“I have more registrations than I could accommodate, so there will be a sequel,” says Marc. He expects it to become an annual activity and then in the future it will not only be for girls. Boys are also very welcome.

No new tuberculosis cases at PSV after striker Pérez becomes infected

None of the PSV players or staff have contracted tuberculosis in recent months. This was revealed after the latest round of tests by the regional GGD.

The national champion was confronted with a tuberculosis infection in striker Lucas Pérez in March. The GGD immediately started a source and contact investigation. The player himself was treated immediately and is now recovering, but will not return to PSV.

On the day that PSV was honoured in Eindhoven for winning the national title, the last test was taken of the players and staff of the selection. All test results were negative and with that the tuberculosis research was formally completed by the GGD.

Substitute

The 36-year-old striker Lucas Pérez signed with PSV in February and wanted to help the club to the title as a substitute. He came over from his childhood sweetheart Deportivo La Coruña, but had his contract terminated a month earlier for personal reasons.

But in the end, little came of helping PSV. The Spanish striker was allowed to come on three times. Twice against Go Ahead Eagles in the cup and league and once against RKC. In total, Pérez played only 27 minutes for the Eindhoven team.

Recovery

The striker says he is recovering well and has been out of quarantine for a few weeks now. With an active tuberculosis infection, someone must be in isolation for three to four weeks and undergo a course of antibiotics. Pérez continues his rehabilitation in consultation with PSV in his home country of Spain. He will have to take medication for his tuberculosis infection for at least another four months.

The experienced striker will not return to PSV. His contract expires at the end of June and it has been decided not to extend it. But Pérez still has the ambition to extend his career at another club.

Furthermore, he will enter into conversation with young administrators about their experiences in local government, VNG reports.

Representatives of municipalities from across the country will reflect on that theme. For example, there are discussions on how municipalities can strengthen each other. There will also be discussions on how municipalities can find new solutions to major social challenges in areas such as economic development, wealth distribution, the labour market and healthcare.

Congress

Since 1918, VNG has organised an annual congress for its members. It is now a two-day event where Mayors, Aldermen, Councillors and other stakeholders from Dutch municipalities meet. Again this year, more than 3,000 participants will be attending.

Launching Elly’s bracelet for singles at Stripe-Fest

Saturday during Stripe-Fest, Elly’s singles bracelet made its entrance. A mint green band that shows you are open to love. The idea came about after the death of her husband. When she suddenly realised how difficult it is to see if someone is still single.

The bachelor and bachelorette bracelets were on display for the first time at Stripe-Fest. Elly stood behind a booth with her friends and sister to promote the bracelets. “There were a lot of great responses. I get so excited about it myself”, Elly Aarts-Van Schalen, creator of ‘The Love Will Find You’, says. The bands provide an approachable way to make contact. Although that was very difficult at the festival at Strijp-S.

True Love

“The weather is not cooperating. You don’t see anyone walking with a bracelet because of all those ponchos and long sleeves”, Stijn says. He bought a bracelet, but was not yet the lucky one to find true love. Lex also bought one and was busy looking. “I’m looking for true love”, he says. He dances with his arms in the air on purpose to draw attention to his band.

Besides the bracelet wearers, others at the festival are not yet as aware of Elly’s concept. “It’s just a bracelet… isn’t it?” But after a lot of guessing, they also knew what the purpose was. “I think it’s a really good concept. I have been with the same guy for a long time, but I understand that for others it is a very good way to address someone”, Jacqueline says with a beer in her hand.

Death

The 44-year-old Elly came up with the idea after the death of her husband. “Such a sad moment in my life got me thinking. Because how do you know, as someone in their 30s, if someone is open to contact? That’s when I came up with the idea of bracelets”. Elly and her friends stood at a stall selling the bracelets. “The weather may not be cooperating, but all those responses keep me motivated. I hope The Love Will Find You will become a concept throughout the country”, Elly says, smiling. When you purchase a bracelet, you not only support yourself as a single, but also a good cause. The charity ‘No Guts No Glory’. They organise musical outings for people with cancer and their caregivers.

Elly is already busy talking to other festival organisers, so she can introduce her bracelets there as well. With hopefully better weather then.

Splitting wood and training in Roman armor

Always wanted to know how you look in Roman armor? You can try it out this weekend during the Roman days at Prehistorisch Dorp open-air museum. Actors will bring antiquity to life there next weekend.

From 29 May 29 to 1 June, at the same time at the Romeinse Dagen you can also make your own Roman cloak pin, build a mini-version of a Roman bridge and bake homemade bread by the fire. The activities are brought to life by actors from re-enactment groups at the open-air museum in Genneper Parken.

There are also several buildings erected that stood in the region of Eindhoven at the time of the Roman Empire. Such as a work shed in which special crafts were practiced. Or a gatehouse that the Romans used as a watch tower. To smell the scents that the Romans brought with them to the Netherlands, visitors can visit the Roman herb garden.

PreHistorisch Dorp (prehistoric village) is an outdoor museum where visitors can learn about the time of the Middle Ages. The grounds are home to actors who live, eat and work as they did back then.

Traditional Indian festival in Eindhoven city centre

From stalls selling traditional products to yoga classes and a parade. On Saturday, the Indian Ratha Yatra festival is back on the programme at 18 Septemberplein in Eindhoven.

The Ratha Yatra festival takes place annually in more than 100 major cities around the world, including Eindhoven. The festival is a combination of Indian religion and culture. ‘People sometimes don’t have time to go to the temple, so now the lord comes out of the temple to come to the people,’ says organiser Sonny Khusial.

Many cultural elements are also associated with the arrival of ‘the lord’. For instance, visitors can enjoy various snacks, drinks and entertainment from morning onwards. ‘It is part of the culture. We receive so many guests. We cannot receive them empty-handed,’ says Khusial.

Interest

Indians are a large community in Eindhoven region. The number of Indians has increased significantly in recent years and thousands of Indians live in the region. Khusial: ‘There is more interest and we also see a bigger turnout.’

The festival does not only attract Indians: ‘Half the people who are interested are white people who all ask questions.’ The festival is therefore meant for everyone, regardless of religion or origin.

Cart ride

The main act of the festival is the Ratha Yatra. ‘Ratha’ means ‘cart’ and ‘Yatra’ means ‘journey’. The journey of The Ratha Yatra starts at 1pm at Trudoplein and arrives at the 18 Septemberplein about 2.5 hours later.

During the journey, bells ring, fruits and other delicacies are distributed and passers-by can enjoy the cart decorated with freshly strung flowers. Pulling the cart is a way of cleansing sins and is part of the tradition of the Ratha Yatra festival.
