Regional Indies commemoration for the first time in Eindhoven

Next week, Eindhoven will be the place where the regional Indies commemoration will be held for the first time. This will take place at the memorial site on the grounds of Vitalis in Woensel.

At the Peppelrode location of Vitalis on the Theodor Fliednerstraat is the Indies and Moluccan Memorial. It was placed in 2021 for Indisch and Moluccan parents, who left Indonesia for the Netherlands with their families at the end of the Second World War. With the monument, the children of that time want to thank their parents for their efforts and sacrifices.

Relocation

The memorial will now also be the location for the regional Indies commemoration. This takes place every year on 15 August. In recent years this was in Geldrop, but that has now been adjusted. The reason for the move is that the people involved and the families of the victims mainly live in Eindhoven and not in Geldrop-Mierlo.

During the Indië Remembrance, relatives and those involved reflect on the end of the Second World War in East Asia and all victims from the period 1942-1949 are remembered. Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem lays a wreath. People who have their roots in the former Dutch East Indies also tell their story during the ceremony. The musical part is provided by the Philips Harmonie.

Note, added by Greta: after the independence of Indonesia from its former coloniser The Netherlands, three groups of people came (back): Dutch people who had owned or managed possessions in Indonesia, Eurasians, and personnel from the Moluccans who had been in Dutch military service.

When older Dutch generations use the word Indië, they refer to Indonesia, not India.

Berry van Aerle appointed as PSV club ambassador

PSV has appointed former professional footballer Berry van Aerle as club ambassador. The 61-year-old Helmond resident joins a group of prominent people who represent PSV at home and abroad. Van Aerle won the European Cup I with PSV and became European champion with the Netherlands.

The defender/midfielder played for PSV for almost his entire professional career. In 363 matches he contributed to eleven major prizes. Van Aerle is currently employed as a scout. He has already received a place in the PSV Walk of Fame for his oeuvre. The fact that he now also officially and actively represents the club as an ambassador makes him incredibly proud.

“I didn’t hesitate for a second, because PSV is deep in my heart. It’s the club where I had posters of above my bed as a child. The fact that I played for PSV for almost my entire career and won all my prizes there, made me very proud. The fact that I am still being honoured years later and that I can now officially represent the club gives me goosebumps.”

Honorary title

The PSV ambassadorship is an honorary title of more than just ceremonial value. The club and the ambassadors agree on a tailor-made interpretation. PSV can call on its ambassadors several times a year.

Earlier, Mart van den Heuvel, Pieter van den Hoogenband, Carlos Salcido, Francisco Rodríguez, Romário, Heurelho Gomes and Luuk de Jong were officially appointed as ambassadors of PSV.

Signify teams up with Mercedes Formula 1

Eindhoven-based lighting company Signify will be working with the Mercedes Formula 1 team until the end of 2026. Among other things, smart lighting will be installed in the car factory and Formula 1 pit boxes to keep staff more alert and reduce jet lag.

The logo of the former lighting division of Philips has already been seen on the cars and racing suits for the past three races. And Signify immediately took maximum advantage of that, according to Tom Lodge. “Two wins in three races, the timing couldn’t have been better”.

Collaboration

Signify will collaborate with the team of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton in three areas. The lighting company will help Mercedes become more sustainable, install smart lighting that improves the performance of staff and drivers and create lighting that makes watching Formula 1 and playing racing games more fun and beautiful.

Reducing jet lag

The Formula 1 season now has 24 races all over the world and that means a lot of travelling and also the necessary jet lag. It is especially tough for the mechanics and engineers. “In a sport where details matter, the right lighting can help keep people alert and perform better”, Tom Lodge, of Signify, explains. “Reducing jet lag with special lighting that really mimics daylight is exactly what we can help with”.

Signify already has lamps that can do this. After the summer break, they will be hung in the Mercedes formula 1 pit boxes during the race weekends. “We will continue to develop this lighting. The technology that Formula 1 cars drive with, you will often find later in your own car”, Lodge explains.

From the pit box to the office

As far as he is concerned, this also applies to the smart lighting that will soon be used in Formula 1. “It is quite possible that these lamps will soon be used in offices or factories. Especially if they also work around the clock there”.

Signify lighting will also be hung everywhere in the Mercedes team factory in Brackley, England, Tom Lodge says. “It should ensure that people can concentrate better there, but also that it is more pleasant to work because, for example, the eyes get more rest”.

Most sustainable sports team

Signify claims to be a pioneer in the lighting industry when it comes to CO² reduction and sustainability. The Eindhoven company wants to be climate neutral by 2040. “We are going to share the knowledge we have gained and are still gaining with the Formula 1 team. Mercedes wants to become the most sustainable sports team in the world and we can help with that”.

The Eindhoven lighting company is not entirely new to Formula 1. The evening and night races in Singapore and Las Vegas are held under artificial lighting from Signify. “We have a total of ten projects running at Mercedes and hope that the team, companies and consumers will benefit. And yes, the intention is also that, in addition to Philips HUE, all our brands will become better known”.

Perfect timing

The Signify logos were first seen on Mercedes Formula 1 cars during the British Grand Prix weekend in early July. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton promptly won that race, after he had not won anything for more than two years and Mercedes had hardly competed for the podium. “We could not have wished for a better start to the collaboration”, Lodge reflects.

And the last race in the Belgian Ardennes was also won by Mercedes. Initially by George Russel, but second-placed Lewis Hamilton inherited that victory later because Russel’s car proved to be too light.

PSV luminaries get a spot on the Walk of Fame

PSV luminaries Eric Gerets and Adrie van Kraaij will get a spot on the Walk of Fame in the Philips Stadium. PSV announced this. Both men were active for the football club both during and after their playing careers.

The new tiles, with their feet on them, are being laid in front of the southern stand of the stadium. There are currently nineteen tiles with footprints and handprints of PSV legends. Romário, Berry van Aerle, Hans van Breukelen, Phillip Cocu, Luc Nilis and Willy van der Kuijlen, among others, already have a spot on the Walk of Fame.

Erik Gerets

The now 70-year-old Gerets played 255 matches for PSV from 1985 to 1992. He was often captain of the first team. During that time, he won the European Cup I and became national champion six times. In 1999, he returned as head coach. As a coach, he became national champion twice with the Eindhoven club.

Adrie van Kraaij

Adrie van Kraaij (71) played in the PSV shirt from 1971 to 1982. He was on the field for the Eindhoven club in almost 400 matches. He won the UEFA Cup and three national titles. After his career, Van Kraaij returned to PSV as a scout and was also technical manager for a short time.

An afternoon at Park Hilaria without stimuli

Every year there is a low-stimulus afternoon at Park Hilaria in Eindhoven: the sound is turned down and the lights are dimmed. It is intended for people with disabilities, autism, epilepsy or the elderly. “I like this” says a visitor.

“This is really nice, for children with a mental disability who suffer from the bright flickering lights and the hard noises”, a visitor says.  She is not there specifically for the low-stimulus funfair, but she does think it is a good idea. She knows people who cannot come on a normal funfair evening. “My son has epilepsy. In the evening with all those lights, it really has an effect on the epilepsy. I know it can cause an attack”.

“I think it is great!”, says Eva. She is at the Eindhoven funfair on Monday especially because of the low-stimulus afternoon. “I think the low-stimulus afternoon at the funfair is super cool. That people who cannot handle stimuli can also just go to the funfair”, she shouts enthusiastically.

Deaf

Many people who are at Park Hilaria on Monday afternoon did not come specifically for the low-stimulus afternoon. “We actually come here every afternoon, just to eat an oliebol (oil ball)”, an older woman says. “I did notice that the noise is a bit less now. But there are also a lot of people who are a bit deaf, like me. So the other days with the loud noise are better for me”, she laughs.

Julian Kwaaitaal back in the FC Eindhoven shirt

FC Eindhoven football club has strengthened itself with attacker Julian Kwaaitaal. He is being rented for a year from the Australian Adelaide United club.

From 2016 to 2019, he played in the youth football academy of FC Eindhoven. The winger impressed there and then he transferred to PSV. There he made it to Jong PSV.

Transfer

This summer, Kwaaitaal has signed with Adelaide United in Australia. A move to the other side of the world is for Kwaaitaal himself not yet on the cards though. He will first be on loan for another year at FC Eindhoven.

“We never lost sight of Julian”, Marc Scheepers, technical manager of FC Eindhoven, says. “We have kept in close contact with him and are happy that we can admire a talent of our own here for another season. Julian mainly plays on the flanks, but can be deployed in several positions”.

Scottish liberators’ names will be shown

Giving your life for a foreign country. That was the reality for Scottish teenagers and twenty-somethings during Operation Market Garden. They fought tooth and nail to liberate Best from the yoke of Nazi Germany. A monument was already there for them, but now a group of residents wants to give the fallen soldiers a face. “It is very important that they are not forgotten” says artist Briët.

In Koetshuistuin (coach house garden), a park in the heart of the village, stands ‘Schots Monument‘ (Scottish monument). The memorial was unveiled in 1994, fifty years after the liberation. It depicts three soldiers breaking through a window. In the eyes of co-initiator Ad van de Wiel and Antoinette Briët, the creator of the statue, it is beautiful, but more can be done to give the fallen soldiers a face.

Five plaques with 171 names should show Best residents in the future who made the ultimate sacrifice. “It is very important that people are given a name. And that you also know how young those people were”, Briët explains. “There are boys who are only 17. The average age of the fallen here was 25. They were just starting to live”, Van de Wiel adds.

Huge German troops

At first, the Allies thought that the liberation of the village would be easy, but it turned into a bitter battle with the occupier. German troops that had withdrawn from West Brabant had ended up in Best via the railway. “They had a huge force here. And those German soldiers did not give up easily”.

As a result, the liberation of Best was delayed. That the battle for the village was not easy is evident from the story of a liberator who was seriously injured but fortunately survived. “That boy said that he had not eaten for days, because there was no supply of food. The only thing that was supplied was ammunition, so that they could fight. But there was not enough of that either”.

Finally, on 24 October 1944, the flag could be flown in Best. Many soldiers, on both sides, paid the ultimate price for the liberation. A total of 171 names will soon be on the plaques. This list was compiled with the help of a military historian. “We know that we do not have a complete list, but we have been as careful as possible”.

The Comité Schots Monument (Scottish monument committee) wants to unveil the Wall of Honour on 24 October. That will be eighty years since Best was liberated.

Olympic bronze for rider Maikel van der Vleuten

Show jumper Maikel van der Vleuten from Mierlo won bronze on Tuesday during the Olympic horse show jumping competition. He remained faultless during the regular competition, together with two other riders. However, in the jump-off he knocked down one pole with his horse Beauville Z.

The 36-year-old from Brabant was already certain of a medal before the decisive round. In the jump-off, in which eight obstacles had to be taken, the German Christian Kukuk was the only one without mistakes. After Van der Vleuten’s ride, it was a matter of waiting for Steve Guerdat’s result. The Swiss also made one mistake, but rode a faster time.

Van der Vleuten also won individual bronze during the previous Games in Tokyo. In 2012, he won silver with the Dutch team.

Theme Park DippieDoe celebrates its silver jubilee

0

Theme Park DippieDoe in Best is celebrating its 25th anniversary. That’s why the park is celebrating for four days. There’s an anniversary show, a street artist and special stalls with delicious food.

In 1999, the park opened its doors for the first time with an indoor playground. Over the past 25 years, DippieDoe has grown a lot bigger and expanded outdoors too. That is where the party is happening now. “It is always fun here, of course,” says team leader Rico van Gerven. “But it is even more fun now. We have set up an entire square with entertainment and food. For children and their parents.”

Truly Magical

It is not only a magical place for the children. Employees also enjoy going to work, such as Ben van Lierop. He has been working in the park for four years. “There is nothing better than seeing laughing children all day long,” he thinks. He enjoys interacting with visitors the most. That’s why he prefers to work at the swing ship and the swing carousel. “You always wait there with a whole group of children for the next ride. That gives you the chance to cheer them on a bit and have fun with the children,” he laughs. For him, it’s not just a party now. “The atmosphere is good, of course, but to be completely honest, that’s always the case. Anniversary or not.”

The celebrations last until Sunday, August 4. “On Thursday it was officially 25 years, but we will celebrate for four days,” says Van Gerven.
