Less than 2 months to Kings Day

0

It’s less than two months till Koningsdag (Kings Day). And this year, Willem Alexander and the royal family will be celebrating his 54th birthday in Eindhoven.

King’s Day is on Thursday, 27 April. In line with the COVID-19 rules, the Eindhoven Municipality is urging people to celebrate at home. The monarch will be in Eindhoven on that day between about 11:00 and 13:00.

You can follow this visit via the national broadcaster, NOS. Or at this special (Dutch) website set up by the Eindhoven City Council. You can also find the day’s online programme on this website, closer to the big day.

Eindhoven is known as a city of Technology, Design and Knowledge. So, the line-up promises to be unique. You can keep up to date with what’s in store on this typical Dutch holiday via the municipality’s various social media channels.

Local visits all Eindhoven Quiz spots

0

Sandra Groeneveld from Eindhoven visited 100 special places.

These were all featured in the Grote Eindhoven Quiz. She took a selfie at each of the sites. It started as a joke. During the quiz, Sandra didn’t know where the zebra crossing at Strijp-T was.

Even though she knew she had seen it somewhere before. “When I saw the picture during the quiz, I couldn’t think of it. A few days later, I came across the crossing at Strijp-T.”

Selfies

“I sent a selfie to the friends I had played the quiz. I added, ‘I should have known about these’,” Sandra says. “Then they jokingly asked whether I was going to visit the other 99 locations as well.”

“A few were within walking distance. That was a good reason to get out of the house. Others I visited by bicycle with my young daughter.”

“And sometimes we would drive to a neighbourhood and take a walk there,” Sandra says. “In the end, we did them all. It was very cool.”

Two dinosaurs bring a bit of Carnaval to the city centre after all

0

Stratumseind, Markt, Dommelstraat: nowhere in the city centre is there anything to be seen or heard of Carnaval. Well except for two dinosaurs that are looking for entertainment against all knowledge.

The only music to be heard in town comes from Jamin’s lolly machine. Beer, too, is nowhere to be seen. Two boys in Carnaval costumes stand in the Market, a little disappointed. They miss Carnaval and had secretly hoped to experience something of the atmosphere in the city.

If they had waited a little longer, they could have seen the two dinosaurs on Rechtestraat putting on their suits. “What were we hoping to find? Nothing, really…”, a woman in one of the suits says. “We just want to have a bit of fun”. They didn’t bring a hip bottle of booze. “No way, it’s just the two of us. Not everything needs alcohol”.

Budget for Koningsdag in Eindhoven: €1.75 million

0

This year, €1.75 million will be set aside for the organisation of Koningsdag (King’s Day), the city council said. This year, the Royal Family will be visiting Eindhoven.

The lion’s share of the money will go to the programme and production. This includes stages, lighting, sound, decorations, and business management. Because this year’s celebration will be different due to the pandemic, the programme is partly digital. To make that possible, extra money has been reserved for insurance.

Secret locations
The Mayor and Aldermen wrote: “It will not be a traditional Koningsdag with a physical route through the city. Due to corona, we want as few visitors in the city as possible. We are assuming the physical presence of the Royal Family, but at closed and secret locations. We see viewers at home more as ‘participants’, they can participate interactively.”

Huge job
The council says the event, which is no small feat, will be good for the city’s image and marketing. ‘The preparation time is short and the challenges are great. We will need a digital platform that is robust and secure enough for an event of this magnitude. And we will have to comply with the corona measures that will be in place at that time’.

The budget for Koningsdag is largely funded by the municipality, with provincial authorities also contributing.

Students want to ‘save’ the city’s nightlife

‘Save the Night’. This is what a group of students is calling their live stream.

The five students are from the Fontys Minor Dance Industry in Tilburg. They’re organising a 24-hour live stream from Lab-1 in Eindhoven. They want to draw attention to the city’s nightlife.

One of the organisers, Demi Kok, explains why the students started the project. “Nightlife is extremely important for many people. Not only for the development of the city, for participants’ development too.”

“For many people, going out at night forms an important part of their social life. That’s in danger now.” According to Kok, various places contribute to a night out.

These include hotels, bars, cafes, restaurants, as well as those in the cultural sector. The corona crisis is hitting these places hard. “That, while there are few opportunities to make up for these losses.”

An experience

“A restaurant can still deliver meals; for a pub or a nightclub, it’s different,” explains Demi. “It’s difficult to have a beer delivered. People also come for the experience, the social interaction.”

“An online concert or zoom meeting can’t replace that.” However, this is the form ‘Save the Night’ has to take. “It’s the only way for us to draw attention to the state of nightlife.”

The event starts this Thursday at 18:00. It’ll last until 18:00 the next day. It’ll consist of debates, columns, and music.

“LAB-1, the Mission, GroenLinks, several night mayors, The Orchestra Collective, Smèrrig, and the Pit Stop youth centre will be joining the discussion.” The event will be streamed live via the Twitch.tv streaming platform.
