P&R Genneper Parken to get 600 parking spots

0

A four-storey car park with space for 600 cars. This is how big the new P&R Genneper Parken will be, Eindhoven Municipality writes.

The parking garage is to be built on RPC football club’s current main field. In 2020, the much talked about P&R should be ready. From then on, paid parking will be introduced for the rest of Genneper Parken.

According to the Eindhovens Dagblad, (Eindhoven Daily Newspaper) athletes are only charged after five hours, while non-athletes must pay from minute one. It is not clear how the distinction is made.

Oranje-Rood

On weekends when Oranje-Rood is playing hockey, the parking garage will be used by the club’s athletes and supporters. The current car park at the hockey club on Charles Roelslaan will no longer be in use. On this kind of sporting weekend, there will still be room for between 150 and 200 cars.

Cost

The cost is going to be high: over EUR20 million. The expenses will be paid mainly with an HOV (High-quality Public Transport) subsidy from the province of Noord Brabant. This grant is good for EUR14 million. The remainder will be covered by parking revenues and rent of the grounds by the GGD (Public Health Service) who park their ambulances there.

RPC and Tivoli

The RPC will move to De Heihoef Sportpark. This venue is home to the Tivoli football club. Here, there are two new artificial turf fields as well as three natural grass pitches. Everything is under lights. The RPC will also get a new canteen and six dressing rooms at this sports park.

Going green with whipping out paving stones in Geldrop-Mierlo

Under the motto ‘Tegel eruit, groen erin: De eerste tegel telt!’ (‘stone out, green in: the first stone counts!’) Frans Stravers of the Municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo recently collected the first paving stones from a resident on a cargo bike and exchanged them for a plant.

The municipality hereby underlines the importance of the campaign to green Geldrop-Mierlo. Various initiatives have been started: for example, 250 square metres of paving will be removed from Kersenstraat in Mierlo and greenery will be created in its place. “We also removed stones in Geldrop. At Olmenhof, a paved square has been partly converted into a park”.

The NK Tegelwippen (Dutch whipping out paving stone championships) take place until 31 October, 2024. Geldrop-Mierlo municipality is also participating, Stravers says. “Last year we removed 1,277 stones. And we want to improve this in 2024. Everyone can participate by removing stones in their own garden and replacing them with grass, flower beds, trees and facade gardens”.

Stones in exchange for plants

During the campaign, residents who remove at least eleven stones (one square metre, ed.) from their front or backyard will receive a gift. Anyone who registers at www.nktegelwippen.nl and then takes their stones to Milieustraat (recycling centre) to hand them in for free will receive a voucher. This allows you to select a free plant at GroenRijk Geldrop.

And from 19 April to 29 April and from 31 May to 9 June, the stones can also be returned directly to GroenRijk Geldrop. Stravers: “All people have to do is register via the NK Tegelwippen website. With the confirmation of receipt they can then go to the garden centre”.

Students want to ‘save’ the city’s nightlife

‘Save the Night’. This is what a group of students is calling their live stream.

The five students are from the Fontys Minor Dance Industry in Tilburg. They’re organising a 24-hour live stream from Lab-1 in Eindhoven. They want to draw attention to the city’s nightlife.

One of the organisers, Demi Kok, explains why the students started the project. “Nightlife is extremely important for many people. Not only for the development of the city, for participants’ development too.”

“For many people, going out at night forms an important part of their social life. That’s in danger now.” According to Kok, various places contribute to a night out.

These include hotels, bars, cafes, restaurants, as well as those in the cultural sector. The corona crisis is hitting these places hard. “That, while there are few opportunities to make up for these losses.”

An experience

“A restaurant can still deliver meals; for a pub or a nightclub, it’s different,” explains Demi. “It’s difficult to have a beer delivered. People also come for the experience, the social interaction.”

“An online concert or zoom meeting can’t replace that.” However, this is the form ‘Save the Night’ has to take. “It’s the only way for us to draw attention to the state of nightlife.”

The event starts this Thursday at 18:00. It’ll last until 18:00 the next day. It’ll consist of debates, columns, and music.

“LAB-1, the Mission, GroenLinks, several night mayors, The Orchestra Collective, Smèrrig, and the Pit Stop youth centre will be joining the discussion.” The event will be streamed live via the Twitch.tv streaming platform.

‘Prehistorisch Dorp most child-friendly museum in Brabant’

The Prehistorisch Dorp (prehistoric village) in Eindhoven has been declared the most child-friendly museum of Noord Brabant. Over the past year, 3,500 children visited various museums in the country and gave their opinion.

The Museumkids Award has been presented for ten consecutive years. This year, the Prehistorisch Dorp narrowly missed out on the title of ‘Kidsproof museum 2022’. The Discovery Museum in Kerkrade scored 9.1 and thus 0.1 higher than the Eindhoven open air museum.

Nevertheless, Yvonne Lammers of the Prehistorisch Dorp is proud. “I think it’s great to see that our employees were able to offer such an appreciated experience in these uncertain times. A trip back to the past and away from the daily routine. This award confirms that we are doing well with the public of the future”.

In Prehistorisch Dorp, visitors go back in time. Villagers tell stories about life in prehistory or the Middle Ages. The children can practise old crafts together, such as lighting a fire or making food.

The Silent Film Festival will continue despite COVID-19

0

The fourth edition of the Dutch Silent Film Festival (NSFF) in Eindhoven will take place this year. That’s despite the corona crisis.

That’s according to the event director, Daan van den Hurk. Only silent films are screened during the film festival. They all feature a soundtrack, especially piano pieces.

Because of all the anti-corona measures, the festival has been redesigned. “This edition will be slightly different than usual. There are some tickets for screenings at the Parktheater [and Pand P – ed],” says Daan.

“When those are sold out, there will be an online version. So, if you have a ticket, you can watch the film there.”

Virtual tour

The festival opens on Thursday, 7 January, with a special screening. It runs through to 10 January. The live stream allows visitors to take a virtual tour of century-old city films from across the Netherlands.

Tickets cost either €25 (basic), or €25 or €50 (sponsor and sponsor plus). The basic ticket gives you (digital) access to the entire festival. Different rates apply for physically attending the films in the theatres.

The Sponsor options make you, as the name implies, a sponsor. “Apart from our appreciation, you will be mentioned on our website, if you so choose,” reads the NSFF website. You can buy your tickets on the NSFF website.

URE builds all-new self-driving racing car after ‘intense shock’

It was a great shock: the URE 15 electric racing car burned down under the watchful eye of the students. Less than six months later, however, the students have built a new car: the URE16. The new car will be presented on Thursday afternoon.

That URE16 (named after the student team: University Racing Eindhoven, ed.), had to be built without the students being able to fall back on the old model.

“That indeed made the task more difficult,” says Joos Kat, team manager of URE. “Normally we can use the old car when testing software and hardware. We didn’t have that option now, so we had to use an even older model for those tests – not ideal.”

‘Always alert’
But the students have learned from the accident. “It was a severe shock for everyone but the most important thing is that no one was hurt. The driver was able to get out of the car quickly enough. We have now built in extra security. With the previous car, we met all safety requirements. We have learned that even though you follow all the procedures, you always have to stay alert.”

“The value of building the car is the experience we gain with it, we make everything ourselves.”
Joos Kat, team manager of URE

But burned down or not, the autonomous racing car URE 16 has changed a lot from the previous model. This was not by necessity, Kat explains. “Those plans were already there before we lost the previous model.”

Conversion
“The drive shaft used to have 400 volts, which is now 600 volts. We have designed a new battery pack and new engines,” the team manager explains. “The biggest change compared to the URE15? It’s in the design of the chasis. With the previous car it took us four hours to build it up from a self-driving model to a controllable model. That is no longer necessary. We have built all the functions for autonomous driving into the chassis. Conversion now only takes a few seconds.”

Prizes
With these changes, the student team wants to compete again for the prizes for both autonomous racing and electric racing. “At the autonomous race last year in Spain, we came first,” says Kat. “With driver in the car, we came second in Assen. We want to compete for prizes with this car too.”

Because with those awards, the students get a confirmation of their good work, Kat explains. “It’s not like we’ll immediately come up with innovations with this car that we could apply in industry when we’re done studying. The value of building the car is the experience we gain with it. We make everything ourselves, write the software ourselves. That practical knowledge is enormously valuable when we start our careers.”

Full calendar
But it is not that far yet. First, the students have a summer full of races ahead of them. “In three and a half weeks we will be in Assen for the electric race. In mid-August there is an unofficial world championship in Germany, where we will race both autonomous and electric, and we finish again in Barcelona, with the autonomous race,” Kat says.

Conifer grower Henk receives prestigious prize

Henk van Kempen from Son en Breugel is a tree grower, in conifers to be precise. And not the well-known ones that are found in many gardens, but very special ones. Henk has even received a prestigious international award for it: the Justin C. Harper Award.

This is a prestigious prize for someone who contributes to the propagation and improvement, but also the discovery and cultivation of conifers. Henk is only the second Dutch person to receive this award from the American Conifer Society.”

“When people hear the word ‘conifer’, they immediately think of a big monster. However, there is much more. I mainly specialize in small dwarf forms and rarities.” Requests for Henk’s trees come from all over the world. “That’s why I’m constantly looking for new varieties.”

As an example, Henk shows the so-called Japanese parasol, which actually looks nothing like the ‘traditional’ conifer, which the layman recognizes as such. “It has thick, fleshy needles. There are more than a hundred different types of this tree alone. There are variegated forms, yellow forms, dwarf forms, extreme dwarf forms, etc..”

On expedition

Every two years Henk goes on an ‘expedition’ to the United States or Canada, where he looks for new types of conifers. And he can also be found regularly in various European countries, including Scandinavia, Germany and Austria. However, America is the Valhalla.”

“There are a lot of ‘seekers’ for conifers. Because in the wild you can also find new species and shapes. Just drive around and see if you see an abnormality somewhere in a very large tree. And if you then multiply it again, you can get out conifers like the ones you see here.”

Open

Henk’s nursery in Son en Breugel has approximately 23,000 different plants, of which approximately 4,000 are new every year. On Saturdays his business is open to private individuals and residents can also buy a conifer.

Playa D’evo luon, opened last weekend

0

Yes, you read it well, since July 7th there is an artificial beach at the Evoluon, including beachchairs and matching drinks menu. The entrance is free, the drinks, unfortunately, yet understandably, not. You can just come down and enjoy the sun and nice fine sand, find your beachchair and dream away.

Over the last decade the city beaches have grown in popularity, initially the bigger cities, but those days also many mid-sized cities started to create artificial beaches in the city. On pleasant locations, often close to a river, lake or other means of water they put some nice sand, lounge chairs and cool music, to create an holiday atmosphere. These ‘beaches’ have grown in popularity over the years.

Eindhoven started with this phenomenon last year at the Vestdijk, however the weather after mid-July didn’t really work in its favor. This year the Evoluon is making an attempt. Next to their pond the put white sand and beach chairs. Cocktails are available too.. however swimming in the pond there is unfortunately not allowed, as the water is not in a complete healthy condition. Nevertheless, if you are a beach-fan and holidays haven’t kicked in yet, its worth to check it out. Its open most weekends, whenever its above 21c, and lasts till begin of September

So whether you want to go to Brainport Beach, Strijp Strand or Philips Plage, wait for the sun to come out, and head for the Evoluon to relax on the white sand.
