Internationals have many burning questions, such as inflation, taxation, housing issues, the 30% ruling, immigration policy, higher education courses in English, inflation, economic growth, childcare allowance and so on. The number of internationals with a vote in the Brainport region has increased significantly. If you have a vote, it’s all the more important that you attend the debate before you decide.

Is it right to convert agricultural land to neighbourhoods to solve the housing crisis? What are the ecological implications of doing so?

Should health insurance deductibles be abolished? If so, how does it affect premiums?

What do parties propose to deal with the demand for daycare for children?

Should families of refugees be allowed to live in the Netherlands? Which parties support that which don’t?

What are the standpoints of the parties about taxation and futuristic tax reform?

Should other countries be welcome to join the European Union? What are the connotations?

Recently, Omtzigt, the leader of the NSC (Nieuw Sociaal Contract) party, said that expats control the housing market in Amsterdam because of their disposable income, enabled by the 30% tax rebate. Bhagaya, an expat, defends, “The disposable income because of the 30% ruling is barely sufficient to take care of the international school fees of my two children”. How will the changes to the 30% ruling affect the Dutch economy? How do political parties intend to deal with reverberations?

The international students, on the other hand, are concerned about housing issues, zoekjaar visum (search year visa) and the country’s economic growth. After all, they would like to weigh their prospects.

Date: 16 November 2023

Time: 18:00 to 20:00 hrs

Venue: Raadzaal, Stadhuis Eindhoven (city hall)

Sinterklaas house saved: ‘Some days more Piets than others’

The Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas) House Eindhoven has been saved and so the first children can enter Steentjeskerk (stone church) on Saturday. Last week, chairman Olof van Gelder sounded the alarm because there was a major shortage of volunteers. Dozens of people have now registered and the five-year anniversary can be celebrated.

Van Gelder had sleepless nights last week, because the Sinterklaas celebration was still highly uncertain. “We have a permanent group of volunteers who fortunately help every year, but there are also people who can no longer do it. Because they have moved, have another job or no longer feel like it”.

So this year it was borderline, but thanks to last week’s call, the Sinterklaas House is running again. “Eighteen volunteers have registered within a week. We are now minimally occupied, so this means that some days there are more Sinterklaas helpers than others. In any case, we do not have to disappoint any children”.

Tickets available

This was a lot of reassurance for the organisation, because the preparations were already in full swing. “We had already advertised extensively in the city, the building obviously had to be rented and all kinds of other costs had already been incurred. If it had ultimately not gone ahead, this would have been a real blow to us”.

Fortunately, ticket sales are going in the right direction and have even been sold out for days. “There are still plenty of tickets available, but now that the Sinterklaas news has started, things are going extra fast”.

King Willem-Alexander to drive historic royal DAF car during Eindhoven visit

0

There is only one of DAF’s so-called Kini cars in existence. DAF engineers built the small, roofless car with no doors in 1967 as a gift to Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus to celebrate Willem-Alexander’s birth. After being on display at the DAF Museum for several years, Willem-Alexander will drive it again during his King’s Day visit to Eindhoven on Tuesday.

The car’s unique design was intended to allow the royals to enjoy warm weather journeys. Photographers captured a young Willem-Alexander sitting on his mother’s lap as his father drove it.

Part of the King’s visit to Eindhoven includes watching a parade of cars that have been designed and made in the Eindhoven region. One of those cars is the Kini. ‘Willem-Alexander himself already indicated that he’s looking forward to driving the Kini on Tuesday,’ says Geert Vermeer, the DAF Museum’s chairman.

‘Special’

‘It took a lot of effort to get the car ready,’ Vermeer explains. ‘The car was on the first floor, right at the back of the museum. The entire museum had to be rearranged to get it out, but it worked in the end.’

The blue car has the King’s name etched onto it. Vermeer says, ‘it’s special to let the King drive the car again. It’s an honour.’

Best celebrates liberation day on 24 October

The official commemoration of Best’s liberation will take place on Tuesday 24 October. This will take place at the Scottish monument in the Koetshuistuin garden. The commemoration will be framed musically by Harmonie St Cecilia. An occasional choir led by Marie-Annick Canoy and backpiper Willie McVean will also participate.

Operation Market Garden started on 17 September 1944 with parachute landings. Americans of the 101st Airborne Division landed on the heath between Best and Son. They were followed by the advance of the British XXXth Army Corps from Belgium.

After ten days of fighting, the Allies got no further than a front line, which ran roughly along the railway and Oranjestraat in Best. This front line was occupied by the soldiers of the 15th Scottish Division. In several attacks by the Germans, more than 150 Scots died.

On 24 October, the German occupiers were finally driven out and Best was liberated. Hence this commemoration. Activities start at 18:45, with the official act and wreath laying at 19:00.

Nearly 700 candles on war graves in tribute to allies

0

During Christmas Eve, cemetery De Oude Toren in Eindhoven is traditionally illuminated. Candles are then placed on 686 war graves. It is a tribute to allies who died during the liberation of the Netherlands. A bench will also be unveiled in memory of deceased war veteran Joe Cattini.

This is the seventh time the initiative is being held. Organisers 18 September Foundation and Graves Foundation Brabant have a clear goal in mind. “Let’s reflect together on the importance of remembering and sharing this moment of respect and remembrance.”

Fifteen minutes before the start, the church bells will ring. After volunteers place and light the nearly 700 candles, a subdued ceremony is held. This will include a talk by a Heritage Bearer, a young person who has promised to pass on the war story.

Bench for Joe Cattini

Uniquely this year, a bench in memory of Joe Cattini will be unveiled. The Briton died in April at the age of 100. He was one of the last surviving liberators of Eindhoven, and an honorary citizen of the city.

Cattini was honoured not only for his efforts during the liberation of Eindhoven, but also for what he did after World War II. This included visits to schools to pass on the story of the war to future generations.

The tribute to Joe Cattini and other allies starts at half past four on 24 December.

More than 50 Teslas perform light show at Evoluon

Cars dancing to the rhythm of music combined with a light show. It sounds like something from the future, but was nevertheless a reality at the Evoluon on Friday night. More than 50 Tesla cars performed a show in this location.

The performance at the Evoluon is part of the Global Tesla Light Show. The project is organised by Brit Simon Pollock, in which some 18 clubs from around the world participate.

A light show was given using the cars’ headlights. The Tesla cars also moved along to the music by moving the windows and electric tailgate.

Those dancing cars were captured on camera. All those videos from around the world will be compiled into a video clip. That music video will be released this weekend.
