Hinke Klaver-De Vries turned 108 years old on the 19th of January. She is the oldest resident of Eindhoven.

On her birthday, Mrs Klaver was visited by her granddaughters and the mayor. He brought a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the municipality. The secret behind her advanced age? That is simple. “Persevere. Even if one day is not going well.”

Physical discomforts

The fact that Ms Klaver was a swimming instructor in her working life also plays a part, according to her granddaughters. “She has always played a lot of sports”. Future plans are few and far between for the birthday girl, mainly due to a few physical discomforts she is currently struggling with. “I walk with difficulty. And I once broke my neck during a fall. I can’t look over my shoulder anymore.”

Celebration

Despite this, the birthday of Eindhoven’s oldest resident was celebrated on Friday with a modest gathering of friends and family. They raised a glass to the beautiful number 108 and ate cake in the care home’s restaurant.
