Next Thursday, 18th September, marks 75 years since Eindhoven was liberated from German occupiers. The last living liberators will arrive in Eindhoven this weekend to mark the occasion.
Armando Marquez, along with 41 other veterans from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, landed at Schiphol airport yesterday. British veteran Joe Cattini, lands at Eindhoven airport today.
Sadly, one of the final liberators, Bill Pendell, died last year.
The veterans will be present at various commemorations held in the coming days. One such event will take place on Saturday. A procession of military vehicles will travel through the region to commemorate Operation Market Garden, one of the Second World War’s largest military operations. During the operation, the Allied Forces liberated several towns and cities from German occupation, including Eindhoven, Veghel, Nijmegen and Valkenswaard.
The procession will arrive in Eindhoven at around 12:30pm this Saturday. On Sunday 22nd September, the procession will depart again from Veghel and will travel to its final destination in Nijmegen, passing through Grave, Wijchen and Groesbeek.
