Park Hilaria is in town till Aug 12th

0

The yearly ‘Park Hilaria’ has started last Friday and is open until Sunday 12th. 90 rides and attractions over a 600 meter stretch are awaiting the public to join them. There are also plenty of foodstalls, terraces and many performances of, mainly Dutch, artists and DJ’s.  The entrance is free and its in the Southern part of the Kennedy laan.

In the previous century Eindhoven knew many local ‘kermisses’, almost every neighborhood had their own kermis. Some bigger then others, but in general they had the appeal of local fairgrounds of smaller towns. Very nice for the locals, but not something to  attract many remote people. However in 2002 the local government decided to group it all together, to have the appeal of a big city fair. Therefore they created Park Hilaria, that combines all fairs together and therefore brings fun for every one, has their own terraces and places to eat. It now takes place for the 17th time.

There are also many artists. They mainly focus on the ‘typical’ Dutch entertainment and songs. Maybe not everybodies taste, but it gives a good idea of the Dutch culture as its still alive with the common people. Also traditional Dutch snacks like poffertjes and typical ‘kermis food’ is present. As the entree is free, and kids always seems to love it, it sure its worth a visit.

Grand stand for the differently abled at Lampegat parade

People with disabilities can watch the Carnival parade from a grandstand for the first time in Eindhoven. Next year, during the Lampegat parade on 18 Septemberplein, there will be special places for people in wheelchairs.

This gives them a good view of all the floats that pass by, Stichting Federatie Eindhovens Carnaval (Eindhoven Carnival Federation Foundation, SFEC) says. In addition to the stands for the disabled, there will be more adjustments next Carnival. “We no longer drive through Kerkstraat. It is too narrow there, and the people are too close together. We have noticed after corona that people no longer like that. The municipality also thought so, and so we have avoided narrow streets when planning the route”, Jasper Liplijn of SFEC explains.

The parade starts on Saturday, 10 February, at 13:11 at Paterskerk and then goes via Vestdijk towards 18 Septemberplein. Then the route goes between the pillars of the Piazza entrance, towards Emmasingel, and ends between the Keizersgracht and Wal just past Stadhuisplein.

Higher float

A different route with no more room for Bleekweg, Bleekstraat, Kanaalstraat, Ten Hagestraat and Kerkstraat has been decided now. However, there is a big advantage. “The float can now be a maximum of nine metres high instead of seven metres. They already do that in surrounding villages, so that was certainly a wish of the builders”.

According to Liplijn, smuggling with extra metres is not a good idea. “We hold each car against the measuring stick and see exactly which car exceeds the maximum height. This way, we can maintain a line”.

Grandstand for disabled people

For the first time during the parade, there is a grandstand for people in wheelchairs. “We have someone in the organisation who does a lot for people with disabilities, and she came up with this idea. We had not thought about how difficult it could be for this group”.

According to the SFEC, the grandstand is the same as at the Eindhoven marathon. “It went well there, too, so why not here. This way, we can give dozens of people in wheelchairs a good view of everything that passes by”.

Information about bilingual secondary education in English

Eindhoven News and Microlab invite the parents of groups 7 & 8 to attend the information evening and panel discussion on Thursday, 2 March, at Microlab.

International parents whose children grow up in the Netherlands are often at crossroads about the education path of their children. Should the children be global and attend an international school or follow a bilingual curriculum or switch to a Dutch way of education? The choice of bilingual education is a recent addition and hence adds to the parents’ challenge of making the best choice for their children.

Even if there is a clear choice, the next aspect is whether the child can adapt and the challenges of choosing one over the other. Questions, questions, questions and the search for better answers has fuelled Eindhoven News to initiate this discussion and information evening. Microlab, an organisation that actively participates in the growth of the region, supports this initiative by hosting this evening. The event will start with a presentation on the secondary education system in the Netherlands. A big thank you to the participating schools, Heerbeeck college (Best), Stedelijk college (Eindhoven) and Sondervick college (Veldhoven).  Thank you to the SKPO group of schools and the SALTO group of schools for actively encouraging the participation of parents. Koelhuis open one last time before major renovation

The Koelhuis (cooling house) opened its doors one last time on the former Campina site in Eindhoven. The monumental building will soon become a creative and technological breeding ground. During the Dutch Design Week, visitors will get a preview.

During the Dutch Design Week, all kinds of installations were installed in the building. They should make people think about the world we live in. “The large soap bubbles on the building symbolise the bubbles in real life”, Marjolein Vlaming, the designer of the large balls on the outside of the Koelhuis, says. “Those bubbles can burst”.

The special buildings in and on the building show the path the Koelhuis is taking as a creative place. The intention is that after the renovation, the industrial monument will have a function where technology and creativity come together. “There is no word for it in Dutch”, says manager Arnold van de Water, “but it will be a place for immersive experiences: a world where you enter with image and sound”.

The Koelhuis

The Koelhuis used to be part of the Campina factory, where hundreds of people worked. Tens of thousands of tons of ice creams were stored here and then sold from Groningen to Maastricht. “It used to be minus thirty degrees here, you were only allowed in here for thirty minutes. Cool to be here now”, a surprised visitor says.

Raw edges

After twenty years, the Koelhuis was decommissioned. Afterwards, squatters lived in it for a while and in 2017 it was on the list of buildings in Eindhoven that would be demolished. A stop has been put to that. “It is a very special building and really belongs to the rough edges of Eindhoven”, Van de Water says. Factorf is the company that is responsible for the renovation.

Eindhoven – the new hub for the Indian startups

Diplomatic relations between India and the Netherlands was established in 1947 and has been cordial and friendly ever since. In the more recent past, trade and investment have become the dominant themes in their bilateral ties. Today, the Netherlands is a significant trade and investment partner of India.

This partnership got a tremendous boost as the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, paid a state visit to India on 24 and 25 May. This visit sought to maximise the potential of the economic and commercial partnership between the two countries. It was a high-level business delegation comprising of four cabinet ministers, 125 companies representatives, and about 220 business participants that focused on strengthening the relations in agriculture, smart cities, healthcare, water management, and Research and Technology.

Lars de Vries, Senior Project Manager, India (BOM Foreign Investments), which is based in Eindhoven,  joined Prime Minister Rutte on his visit to India for the largest Trade mission ever. His company recognises Eindhoven as a hub for Indian companies. We believe in cooperation and our region has a strong connection with India. With the city of Eindhoven being the hometown of Philips, which has also been present in India for the past 100 years, many IT companies have found their business relations with the front-runners in co-creation,’ he explains.

Eindhoven, as we know, is home to over 140 companies and institutions, comprising over 10.000 product developers, researchers, and entrepreneurs and an estimated 85 nationalities. Global companies in the Brainport region like NXP and TOMTOM have a long-standing and committed histories with India. Eindhoven, which is rated as the smartest region in the world, focusses on high tech, mobility, and design. “A few examples of companies from Brabant that joined this mission are Litevax, Eindhoven Medical Robotics, NXP, PAL-V, Schouten Europe, and MTD. Many relevant people from the Indo-Dutch network joined this mission, such as the NICCT, Assocham, as well as my acquisition colleagues from Rotterdam Partners, The Hague Business, and Amsterdam in Business,’ adds Mr De Vries.

He also mentions that the Dutch business environment is conductive for start-ups. “The Eindhoven company, Eindhoven Medical Robotics, is a great example of this. It provides advanced knowledge and technologies, assisting surgeons to do the impossible with their RoboSculpt, which has the ability to navigate autonomously during high precision bone surgery. A very promising technology start-up, which intends to ramp up to a 1.000+ people team, utilising the collaborative R&D network between the Netherlands and India, using the scale of the market that India offers.”

Anupam Nayak and Jordan Bos from Eindhoven Medical Robotics were also invited by RVO to join the Dutch trade mission to India. Together with their team, they have an ambitious plan to make EM Robotics a world leader in high precision surgical robots. They have a partnership agreement with TU/e. “Igniting young minds of surgeons by training them with the latest in technology and giving them an opportunity to join us back here in Eindhoven, also opens up diverse avenues for future educational and business collaborations,” Anupam explains. Anupam is the COO of Eindhoven Medical Robotics and founded the company along with Prof. Maarten Steinbuch. “Currently, all engineering and manufacturing are located in Eindhoven with pre-clinical tests and human trials being set up worldwide,” she informs us with enthusiasm. She earnestly believes that, “The power of joining forces with the Dutch initiatives in India will surely enable us to expand our presence in the fastest growing healthcare markets of the world.”

More and more Dutch people are choosing to start a business in emerging markets such as India. They do this not only because there are many economic opportunities there, but also because this is stimulated by the government.

Indian startups have registered notable growth in sectors like Fintech, logistics, medical science, and e-commerce. “Out of the 200 Indian companies in the Netherlands, our small region hosts almost 30 companies from India including the large corporates like Wipro, Infosys BPO, Cognizant, Tata Steel Tubes, RF Solutions, Banco Products, and many other small and innovative firms like Forthcode, and Intech DMLS which are now expanding to Eindhoven,’ explains Mr de Vries. “During this Trade mission, I focused on meeting as many Indian companies with a presence in Brabant, who have current projects and new companies that might be interested in establishing in our region. We wanted to make sure that we became recognised as a hub for Indian companies. ”

Young Brainport Summer School attracts young international talent

Brainport Eindhoven’s internationalisation is to get a further impetus. The fourth edition of the Young Brainport Summer School (YBSS) will be held from 10 to 17 August.

Forty gifted youngsters between the ages of 15 and 18 from 17 different countries worldwide are attending this educational summer week. They will be immersed in all the innovative activities and culture of the city and region. The goal is to give these top talents a ‘life-changing experience’. It is hoped they will remain connected to Brainport and be ambassadors for Eindhoven.

Well-known professors and representatives from the business world and knowledge institutions will guide the kids through the world of new technologies. There will be special demos, company visits, and challenging assignments. The programme also includes social activities, where the participants will get to know the city and region better.

‘An amazing experience’

A successful combination, according to the reaction of one of the 2018 participants. Vikram Bhatt from Canada, “YBSS is a truly amazing experience, a healthy mix of exhilarating social activities and brain hammering company workshops. It feels like you are in a completely new world as you explore Brainport Eindhoven. But you also feel at home as you socialise with other students with similar mindsets. All in all, YBSS helped me grow as an individual, and it is something I will never forget.”

“This is how the region reaches new talent needed for the future, “said Yvonne van Hest, Programme Manager at Brainport Development. “Due to the shortage in the technological labour market, many companies in Brainport Eindhoven have a shortage of well-trained staff. It is important to attract the largest possible pool of talent from students from at home and abroad. The YBSS is one of the ways to fill that talent pool.”

All participants receive a certificate at the end of the week.

DDW attracts visitors from all over the world

0

Eindhoven’s Dutch Design Week had a busy opening-weekend. The DDW attracts visitors from all over the world.

Eindhoven’s municipality and the DDW organization look back at the DDW opening weekend with great satisfaction. They remarked, the city is bubbling and bustling. There are visitors and colleagues from all over the world.

“It is full of people; overflowing in many places. As a result, there is no fresh orange juice available at eateries and hotels”, jokes Martijn Paulen of the Dutch Design Foundation.

Alderman Monique List shares his enthusiasm. “The attraction is especially the variety of visitors. International and local, young and old!” She also stresses the importance of attention from “The Hague”.  Minister of Education Ingrid van Engelshoven and members of the Dutch Tweede-Kamer visited DDW during the opening weekend.

This year, the influx from abroad is striking, as usual. The number of foreign media, for example, who cover DDW.  Drivers of DDW taxis also notice many visitors from abroad. “I meet people from all over the world in my car; from Australia and East Asia to Ukraine and the United States. This makes you proud to be a native of Eindhoven,” says one of the dozens of drivers.

Until Sunday, the work of 2600 designers can be admired at 110 locations in Eindhoven. Last year, the DDW lured 335,000 visitors to Eindhoven.
