Renovated Van Gogh Village Museum popular

It was closed for six months, but after its opening, the renovated Van Gogh Village museum in Nuenen is attracting a lot of attention. People come from far and wide to view the life of the Brabant master painter. Also Nuenen residents see a whole new museum which brings out, for some, a piece of childhood sentiment.

The former Vincentre has been expanded with an exhibition space and a new wing, and this has not gone unnoticed by visitors. “We are from Amsterdam ourselves and today is a day with bad weather anyway, so it was a good idea to visit a museum. Vincent van Gogh’s art has stolen my heart and here in Nuenen, of course, you see that emphatically reflected”, one of the visitors explained.

“I am originally from Australia and am now in the Netherlands for two months. My parents are Dutch and I therefore want to get to know better where my roots lie”, another woman told Studio040.

Nuenen residents
So international visitors, although Nuenen residents are also curious about the renovated museum. “I grew up in Nuenen, the film was for me a kind of recognition tour through my youth. I saw places in nature where I have been and where I played as a little girl”, one woman explained.

“I volunteer at the museum. I hadn’t been there yet after the renovation,” a man says. “It has become a real museum. Very spacious, lively and also challenging. When you come through the main hall, you can’t believe your eyes. It just looks like the old Van Gogh museum no longer exists. It is very impressive, especially the Light Lab created in collaboration with ASML. I have read that you need at least three hours to read and see everything, so this does invite you to come back,” said the volunteer.

Queen Máxima
Visitors agree and thus have nothing but praise for the revamped Van Gogh Village museum. Especially his life and painting techniques attract visitors’ attention. On 16 May, Queen Máxima will officially open the renovated Van Gogh museum. With the new renovation, the museum aims to grow to 40 thousand visitors a year.

Winter market to bridge gap between internationals and locals

0

Brazilian snacks and prayer cards from Bulgaria. For a while, the Muziekgebouw seemed like a miniature world during the ‘Cultural & Creative Wintermarket’. Not very surprising, since people from all corners of the world come to Brainport to work. This internationalisation is not always easy for both old and new Eindhoven residents. “I would really like to have more contact with local people,” he says.

Socialising together

In the Muziekgebouw on Saturday, it was a to-ing and fro-ing of all kinds of nationalities. Brazilians, Colombians, Bulgarians, and Indians. They left home and hearth to live in a foreign country. “It was scary at first because I didn’t know what to expect,” says a female visitor.

Added to this, they often do not speak the language and there are cultural differences between the new and old Eindhoven residents. That gap needs to be bridged with events like the winter market. “It gives people a chance to show their culture, discover similarities and start discussions with each other,” explains a male visitor the added value.

And that is important according to one of the Dutch guests, dressed in a PSV Christmas jumper. “We live together on this earth, so we have to live together. Moreover, we can learn a lot from each other.”

Kombucha

Of course, there was also a less serious tone. So there was the chance to roll up your own sleeves or watch or taste something from one of the many stalls. “I just made Kombucha at a workshop,” said one of the visitors. “That’s a non-alcoholic drink, very healthy. What you actually do is reuse old Kombucha by adding new tea and water.”

That tastes like more, as there will be another event for internationals at LAB-1 in January.

Here’s some of what’s on at Dutch Design Week

0

This year’s Dutch Design Week (DDW) may be entirely virtual, but it is just as exciting as in previous years.

The 19th DDW’s theme is ‘The new intimacy’ –  the search for new forms of intimacy. There must be a new balance. Especially in a time in which, partly due to Covid-19, people have started to relate differently to each other. And to the world around them. Designers show how we can relate to each other and the world in this new reality.

Dutch Design Week has put together seven highlights for our readers.

Flesh Quake

Fleshquake is a video project. It’s not only about freedom of movement and beauty idealisations. It’s also about the critical society. This stems from the desire to challenge and question Western notions of beauty, normality, and decency.

The Self Design Academy

Who are we and who do we want to be? Driven by the lucrative self-help industry, we polish our identity and image. That makes all of us self-designers – there just wasn’t any training for this. But, now with the Self Design Academy, there is.

The Fashion Tech Farm – inspired by LABELEDBY

Discover the latest innovations in textiles and fashion led by fashion industry change-makers, Jessica Joosse and Fabienne van der Weiden. Visit the Fashion Tech Farm to see all these.

New Order of Fashion

These are radically fresh ideas for a sustainable, circular fashion industry. Among fashion graduates, the call for a sustainable and fair fashion industry is getting louder every year. Not only is there outrage about the exploitation of people and the planet.

The new generation of designers also wants to have a voice in the future. NEW ORDER OF FASHION offers a platform for young, recently graduated fashion talents. They have radically fresh ideas for a sustainable, circular fashion industry with respect and meaning for people.

The Ikea Virtual Greenhouse

In this Virtual Greenhouse, Various experts give master classes and lectures. They also advise on how people can create a warm personal atmosphere at home.

Sunseeker

This is a contemporary, sustainable and interactive answer to the static street lighting we know. Is Sunseeker the future of street lighting in the Netherlands? The 500m pendulum of light modules serves as aesthetic signage during the day and guide at night. Sunseeker will soon go live at Victoriapark in Eindhoven.

Kazerne Design Award 2020

Today’s students form tomorrow. Tea drop is a project on sustainable water use. It received the first Kazerne Design Award. South African-born, Shaakira Jassat, was one of the ten nominees who recently all graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven. These works can now be seen in Kazerne.

These are just a few of the events happening this week, until Sunday 25 October. Please visit the Dutch Design website for the full programme.

Family festival in Eindhoven library during Children’s Book Week

The Bieb Familie Festival is open in the library of Eindhoven. This event is dedicated to the start of the Children’s Book Week.

The theme of this year’s Children’s Book Week is Gi-Ga Green. Nature is often a source of inspiration for writing children’s books. The library of Eindhoven has included this theme in the activities at the festival.

Over the next three weeks, various workshops will be held in the library. For example, children can draw animals, craft insects and go on a treasure hunt.

At 107 years old, Hinke is the oldest in Eindhoven: ‘A lot of sports and staying busy’

The liberation of Eindhoven, the construction of the Evoluon and the establishment of the Drents Dorp. The average resident has heard of these from the history books, but Hinke Klaver-De Vries has experienced them all. At 107 years old, she is the oldest resident of the city.

“Work out a lot and stay busy,” she sums up her secret to a long life. It was not always an easy life. In 1930 she moved with her parents from Leeuwarden to Eindhoven. Her father had got a job at Philips. However, there was one condition: one of the children also had to work in the factory. So it happened that Hinke was already working in the light bulb factory on Emmasingel at the age of 14.

Child labor

She had to measure the contact points of the light bulbs. A seemingly simple task, but the bar was set high. “We as newcomers had to do 7,000 a day, while the experienced employees didn’t even reach 6,000. Just child labour,” she sighs.

Eight years later, her working life came to a temporary end. She married her beloved Jan Klaver. In those days getting married meant she had to stop working. However, sitting still was and is not something for the oldest inhabitant of Eindhoven. In the years that followed, Hinke became a handball instructor and gave swimming lessons. In her own words, she taught ‘half of Eindhoven’ to swim.

Royal award

It wasn’t until she was in her late eighties that she decided to slow down in physical sports, as the 107-year-old had now discovered games on the tablet. With Wordfeud, online scrabble, she still shows her granddaughters ‘a tough match’. “It’s a pity that she still beats us, but we wish her success,” says granddaughter Janine Jongepier with a smile.

Hinke is not only successful in mind sports. Now in nursing home Peppelrode, Hinke can look back on a successful life as well, receiving a royal decoration for her efforts as a swimming teacher in 1996.

TU/e and NXP join forces

Eindhoven University of Technology is going to collaborate with NXP. University and company want to develop a new, promising communication technology. To this end, the parties signed an agreement on Wednesday.

From NXP, specialists from the company will work together with scientists from the Eindhoven Hendrik Casimir Institute. Both parties will make data, knowledge, students and employees available for the cooperation.

Together, the chipmaker and TU/e want to get a new “groundbreaking” technology off the ground, using frequencies above 300 gigahertz. Current technologies that try to make use of these high frequencies perform unevenly, TU/e says.

“TU/e is known for its pioneering work in the field of wireless communications, an area essential to the strategic sovereignty of both the Netherlands and Europe. NXP has been an important partner in this field for many years,” reveals CEO Robert-Jan Smits.

Track record

“Cooperation with leading universities is an integral part of NXP’s innovation strategy,” said Lars Reger, vice president of NXP.

“Eindhoven University of Technology’s proven track record in collaboration with industry gives us full confidence to expand our collaboration. This will lead to new innovations in communication technologies and advanced driver assistance systems, an area in which NXP is a world leader in semiconductors.”

Collaboration

This is the second time in a short time that TU/e has entered into a partnership with a major player in the Brainport region. Earlier it was announced that ASML is investing in the university, building a clean room there, among other things.
