Tech United – that is the name of the Eindhoven University of Technology’s (TU/e) robot football team.

They recently won the Robot Football World Cup for the fifth time. They beat the Chinese team, ‘Water’ 6-4 in Sydney, Australia.

The Dutch team’s robots are named after members of the Dutch Women’s Football tea, the Oranje Leeuwinnen (Orange Lionesses). For example, Sari van Verenstaal (Spring steel), Lieke Motors, Jackie Groenestroom (Greenstream), Dominique Bluetooth, Lineth Rekenbrein (Maths Brain), and Vivianne Wielema shone on the field.

Teams from different universities, research institutes and companies compete in the RoboCup. This is a worldwide competition for autonomous, self-steering robots. These robot teams then play football against each other.

The robots are programmed, but once the starting whistle blows, they are entirely autonomous. The humans are merely spectators.
