The Bijenkorf turns 50

The Eindhoven department store, the Bijenkorf, celebrates its 50th anniversary this week.

In one of the large shop windows, designs of the artist, Emily Forgot, are on display. There are also several activities for customers. These include live music, cookie-baking for the children, and styling advice from Manon Meijers. Furthermore, there is a photo exhibition about the Bijenkorf’s 50 years in Eindhoven.

So, it is half a century ago that the well-known green Bijenkorf building was opened in the Eindhoven city centre. It was designed by the Italian architect, Gio Ponti. Ponti was inspired by his view from the plane while flying over the Netherlands – lots of green, divided into squares, and the typical Dutch channeled structure.
