The Catharina Hospital is on the right track with turning breech babies. The hospital has the record of 55 percent when it comes to the external turning of babies. It is the highest success rate in the Netherlands
To move the babies, force is applied in two places at the same time to the abdomen, on the buttocks and the head of the baby causing it to make a somersault. They try to make the baby’s head turn down in position for birth.
If a baby is in the breech position it is often preferred to choose a caesarean delivery. This is to prevent certain infections, but there are also risks with a caesarean. Therefore, often, before delivery they try to turn the baby from the outside.
Since 2004, more than a thousand babies have been rotated from the outside.
