parkrun officials visit Eindhoven

0

A team of parkrun officials visited Eindhoven last week. It was part of a larger tour of potential new parkrun venues across the Netherlands.

parkrun is a weekly timed event where participants can walk, jog or run a 5 kilometre route in a local park. It is free of charge and organised entirely by volunteers.

Founded in London 15 years ago, parkrun now exists in 21 countries worldwide. In September, parkrun announced its plans to launch new routes in the Netherlands in spring 2020.

As part of their visit, the parkrun team met with the volunteers who are designing and testing potential routes.

‘We had a fantastic visit to the Netherlands,’ says Deri Thomas, parkrun’s European Territory Manager. ‘We met some great teams and saw some stunning potential parkrun venues. Eindhoven was right up there and we’re excited to get started early in the spring.’

The volunteers also expressed their excitement. Jesus González, a wireless engineer at Philips, says, ‘after enjoying parkrun in other countries, we can finally say that parkrun will take place in the Netherlands’. González also says that the parkrun representatives ‘were very positive about the park and the surroundings. We are looking forward to it’.

Eindhoven’s parkrun event is expected to launch in late February or early March 2020 at Karpendonkse Plas.

Community service for police officer who killed motorist

0

The 26-year-old police officer who caused an accident in December last year has been sentenced to 200 hours of community service. Moreover, he is not allowed to drive a car for six months.

Location

The officer drove across Dr Cuyperlaan with flashing lights in December 2022 pursuing a vehicle that was alledgedly transporting a decoy bicycle. The policecar drove at a speed of  130 kilometres per hour, where 50 kilometres per hour is the maximum permitted speed.
At the intersection with Woenselsestraat, the officer ran into a motorcyclist at 100 kilometres per hour. The car came to a stop against a light pole. The victim did not survive the blow.

Rulings

The court found that the officer was careless and inattentive and did not take enough account of other road users. He exceeded police guidelines. The court also believes that the suspect should not be punished in the same way as an ordinary road user because the actions of a police officer entail risks. The suspect acted with the best intentions, was deeply affected and expressed regret to the relatives.

The court therefore does not consider an unconditional prison sentence appropriate. However, the man will receive a community service order of 200 hours and a driving ban of twelve months, six of which will be conditional.

Neelie Kroes calls for more tech-women at High Tech Campus event: ‘Girl power!’

Former European Commissioner Neelie Kroes called for more women in the technology sector at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven on Tuesday.

She made this statement at the event Female Tech Heroes that was organised with the same aim: more women in the technical world which is now dominated by men. “It has to become a more balanced mix of men and women. It will lead to other ideas and nicer products”, organiser Hilde de Vocht said. “Research shows that a diverse team leads to better products”, co-organiser Ingelou Stol adds.

Network kick off

The Female Tech Heroes Network was also launched during the opening of the conference. This network already counts 1,500 members and is meant for creating more opportunities for women in technology, organise workshops and of course, network.

Handful of men

Almost only women could be found in the conference centre of the High Tech Campus yesterday. Here and there you saw a few men, usually talking to a woman. “The society exists about half of men and women. So it is healthy to pursue that in all sectors”, one of the men present said.

Lot of interest

“Today we could have filled the room five times with enthusiastic women who find this an important topic”, De Vocht said. It shows that the subject is alive, but that the transition to have more jobs filled by women is yet to be made.

Samen voor Nederland (together for the Netherlands) back protesting farmers and protest against Corona measures

Demonstrators gathered in a large group on Sunday in Eindhoven to show their support for farmers and their dissatisfaction with the Corona measures.

It was an initiative by Samen voor Nederland and started from Stadhuisplein. By noon, the square was filled with young and old protesters. They carried flags with texts such as ‘real citizens support farmers’, as well as flags bearing gravely insulting texts. The dissatisfaction among the crowd was not only because of the government’s treatment of farmers and the nitrogen policy. There were also people who expressed their aversion to “the media” and Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s corona policy. One of the best-known attendees was the foreman of Virus Truth, Willem Engel.

The protesters began their march through Eindhoven after they had been whipped up with music and speeches at the Stadhuisplein. The aim of the demonstration was to tell the government to stop bullying farmers and to end the Corona measures.

PSV eliminated in eighth final cup tournament

0

PSV had to bow to Feyenoord in a packed De Kuip on Wednesday evening. The Eindhoven team were beaten 1-0 and were therefore eliminated in the eighth finals of the cup tournament.

After earlier victories this season against Feyenoord in the battle for Johan Cruyff Scale and in the competition, coach Peter Bosz’s team now lost to the Rotterdam team. This means that PSV’s chance to achieve ‘the double’ this season, by winning the national title and the cup, has been lost.

Negligent

Feyenoord immediately put pressure on and that quickly led to a chance from Gimenez. Shortly afterwards, PSV came out dangerously with a header that hit the post by Til. PSV was sloppy in possession of the ball, but the home team was initially unable to take sufficient advantage of this. Still, after half an hour it was a hit. Paixao first shot over the goal, but moments later Timber managed to find the net.

Chances

Shortly after halftime, PSV had opportunities to equalise. After first a dangerous scramble in front of the Rotterdam team’s goal, a little later it is Lang who is close to scoring. He appears to be offside. The PSV players then think about a penalty kick when Lang is knocked down by Wieffer. Yet no penalty is given. Bosz made frequent substitutions in the second half, with the arrival of Vertessen, Pepi and Van Aanholt, among others. Yet that could not force a turnaround in the game.

Feyenoord will meet AZ in the quarter-finals. PSV can now focus on the competition and the Champions League.

Eindhoven celebrates and commemorates on 18 September

0

On 18 September 1944 Eindhoven was liberated from the German occupiers in the Second World War. Tonight this was commemorated with a torch relay in the city center.

The liberation fire was taken to the Town Hall Square in a large procession from the 18 Septemberplein. Veterans took part in the procession, army vehicles, various music bands and associations. With the fire, mayor Jorritsma then lit the torch at the liberation monument on Stadhuisplein. That fire will continue to burn until October 11.

At the same time, igniting the liberation fire, also signifies the start of the annual Lichtjesroute through Eindhoven. Ornaments decorated with lamps indicate the route through the city that the Allies have covered at the time of the liberation.
