Cinemas can bend new COVID-19 rules

0

There’s already an exception to the earlier closing times for restaurants and nightclubs.

Cinemas may finish screenings that started before 22:00 at 01:00, at the latest. The Eindhoven cinema, LAB – 1, enthusiastically reports this exception. The cinema has already adapted its programming.

Initially, it seemed the last movie-goers were going to have to leave the cinema before 22:00. That doesn’t appear to be the case. However, refreshment sales must stop at 22:00.

The exception is hidden in a long explanation on the Dutch government’s website. Earlier, it was already known that takeaway restaurants may be open later. They can remain so until 02:00.

But, they can’t sell alcohol after 22:00.

Don’t miss these during the Dutch Design week !

The Dutch Design Week started this weekend. Visitors to Eindhoven can delve into future design for ten days, spread over 120 places in the city. You should not miss these special designs.

Fifty shades of red

Designer Ilse Evers relaxes into a bright red chair. It is made from old fire hoses, just like the rest of her collection.

“I make belts, bags, but also lamps and stools. All from fire hoses. My neighbour once gave me such a hose. Then I looked at the material from all sides and started to take it apart. I discovered that it is very strong material. It is colourfast, with a very nice shine. And you can use it both indoors and outdoors, because it is not afraid of water,” says Ilse with a smile.

All Ilse’s designs are unique. “Each hose has its own colour and its own details. Fifty shades of red actually. In fact, no two products are the same.”

The converted fire hoses attract a lot of attention. Simon Le Fevre, visitor to the Dutch Design Week, also plops down in Ilse’s chair.

“It fits well. And it makes you think. To make wooden chairs, we cut down trees. We need animals to make leather chairs. But this is the reuse of old materials. I think that is important.”

Claybens

Many people look at the bricks of designer Emy Bensdorp. She makes clean bricks from clay soil contaminated by PFAS. “That is very special, because previously this soil could only be dumped,” she explains proudly. “During my work as a designer, I gained some experience with ceramics. Making ceramics entails baking clay at 1000 degrees in a special oven, so when I read that PFAS chemicals are rendered harmless around these temperatures, the penny dropped”.

So Emy found a way to break down the toxin PFAS. “I put the contaminated soil in an industrial oven. The heat causes the chemicals to disintegrate and a clean building product – the claybens- remains. We will soon do a large test and make 50,000 bricks, enough for a terraced house. It would be great if houses could soon be built with these bricks. The most important thing is that no more harmful chemicals will end up in the environment.”

Vorkoster

Everyone has experienced it: you think your food is still good in the refrigerator, but the expiry date on the packaging has just passed. “Many people tend to throw the food in the bin. Food waste is also related to the lack of using our senses. We have these natural abilities to check the quality of food through our senses, our sight, smell and taste. A banana peel gets brown, you see it. With Vorkoster I wanted to design the banana peel for every food product. A colour change indicator”, says designer Kimia Amir-Moazami

“This is a lid with a foil that responds to the pH value of the stored food. By changing colour, it shows whether protein-containing food is still edible or not. It therefore shows the actual shelf life,” explains René van Geer from the Secrid Talent Podium. “If the food is no longer good, the foil simply turns red. This prevents food from being thrown away unnecessarily.”

Rien van Ginneken and his wife look on with interest. “I think it is an intelligent lid. There are many products here at DDW that do not look immediately useful but I think I would buy this. Very good to prevent waste in this way.”

It is almost summer holidays. Yay! For this reason, Holi-yay is popping up at The Student Hotel Eindhoven.

Two local students will be running this unique, temporary store. It will be open from 12 to 25 May on the first floor of the Hotel’s restaurant. Third-year student entrepreneurs, Dagmar van Lieshout and Amber Huls, are doing a course in International Lifestyle Studies at Fontys.

They have created their own future. Together, they started the Holi-yay company, which is now also part of their internship position. The two students sell trendy travel articles through their webshop – colourful bags, towels with tropical prints, sunglasses, suitcase accessories, and trendy inflatables. Everything you need to go on a great holiday.

Here’s your opportunity to see their range of products with your own eyes instead of online. Holi-yay’s pop-up store is the perfect collaboration with The Student Hotel. Heavy rain did not affect special Lichtjesroute evening

0

Saturday evening, heavy rain continued to fall? This wet weather did not interfere with the annual “Lichtjesroute” cycling tour.

Bands and orchestras along the route kept playing. Free coffee and tea, as well as the light-displays and buckets of fun compensated for a very wet experience.

“The Lichtjesroute is best taken cycling,” according to Ivo Baijens of the organization: “Cycle and you see more!”

But more important, according to this member of the organization: one needs to cycle the route with a group. “In the end, this is all about solidarity. Nobody takes the Lichtjesroute alone. People always go with friends or family”.

For many people in Eindhoven, cycling or driving the Lichtjesroute is an annual tradition. It is part of the period related to commemorating Eindhoven’s liberation when after 18 September, lights light up like a ribbon through this city.

“We had already agreed with friends a few weeks ago to drive the route,” says one of the participants, “but of course, we didn’t know at the time, it would rain so hard.” To immediately add: “Well, we dressed for the weather and went anyway.”

Interested in cycling this route with a group of friends? The lights along the Lichtjesroute will remain on, till 14th of October 2018.

Even better: the weather forecast looks promising. Wednesday and Thursday are predicted to be excellent: no rain and hardly any wind. So if you missed Saturday’s special evening, how about organizing an evening cycling tour with friends, along Eindhoven’s Lichtjesroute?

The 2018-route can be downloaded for free through the organization’s website. The organization points out, some displays will only light up after 20:00. Saturday 22nd of September was a special evening; no music, free tea or coffee during other evenings.

Park Hilaria remains a crowd pleaser

0

Park Hilaria 2023 had a wet start, but in the end many visitors found their way to the temporary amusement park on the Kennedylaan in Eindhoven. Thanks to the dry weather and pleasant temperatures, the second half of the week was considerably busier.

The 21st edition of Park Hilaria offered a wide range of attractions for young and old. The big spectacular attractions, such as the Entertainer, the Chaos and the Eclipse, did well with thrillseekers, while families with (young) children had a great time on the special children’s attractions and at the outdoor cafés.

The organisers are very pleased with how it went. “This edition too proved that Park Hilaria is a great concept. For ten days, visitors, volunteers and operators enjoyed the wonderful, convivial atmosphere and we were able to surprise our guests again with new attractions. That’s what we do it for,” said Mariola Scheepstra of Eindhoven247.

Next year, Park Hilaria will take place from 2 to 11 August 2024. Then, the temporary amusement park, including live entertainment, will once again take place at Jonh F Kennedylaan in Eindhoven.

Unique fashion show held

Yesterday, a unique, circular art fashion show was held in DomusDela, Eindhoven.

The OUD en NIEUW (OLD and NEW) event was especially for people living with dementia. The fashion was designed especially for them. Not only that; the 12 models are also people living with this condition.

Students from Summa College in Eindhoven helped out with this event. The show was Teun Toebes and designer Babette van Rijthoven’s brainchild. Teuns is a nurse and the founder of the sTeun en Toeverlaat Foundation.

‘Laughed and cried’

These two want to give people living with dementia a platform. “We already look back on OUD en NIEUW with enormous pleasure,” says Teun (21). “We laughed and cried while enjoying the beautiful creations and special stories.”

“The models, however, touched us the most. Their deterioration and forgetting process is sometimes heartbreaking. But people with dementia can enjoy and live in the moment like no others.”

“And that is exactly what happened [yesterday]. Why? They drew attention to their stories, not their condition,” Teun says.

Repurposed

Teun and Babette also wanted to show that old clothes can be repurposed into new fashionable creations. The clothing was made from people who had had dementia but are now deceased. “The models were so grateful for the outfits we’d put together especially for them,” says Babette.

“That’s humbling. And we’re also proud that we could produce these creations sustainably. A fantastic team of students and teachers from various colleges supported us in this.” These included the Summa students, who helped stitch the designs.

“The designs were made with the previous owners’ stories in mind. The collaboration with the models was an eye-opener for the students. They learned a lot,” Summa Fashion lecturer, Marloes Michielsen, says.

More than a thousand people followed the show, digitally. There was also live music from various genres. These included DJ Je Moeder, Dylan Greene, and opera singer, Francis van Broekhuizen.

Somber Remembrance Day

0

For the second year in a row, Remembrance Day was held without any fanfare.

Like last year, In Eindhoven, the commemoration took place privately at the cemetery De Oude Toren cemetery. The ceremony (you can watch it below, in Dutch) was recorded beforehand and was broadcasted last night on Studio040.

Besides Mayor John Jorritsma, a few other councillors also attended the service. Representatives from the armed forces and Stichting 18 September were also present.

Other events

Student organisation Liberation 040 usually organises a festival on 18 September. They also didn’t let the national commemoration pass unnoticed. They organised an online lecture.

This Dutch lectre was on the Eindhoven war hero, Jan Zwartendijk. They did so in cooperation with the student organisation, Studium Generale.

The public event on the British Field of Honour in Mierlo was also scrapped this year. The Geldrop-Mierlo municipality also placed a (Dutch) video online to mark the day.

In Waalre, the annual ceremony in the park near Iman van Den Boschlaan didn’t take place either. Acting Mayor Jan Boelhouwer gave a speech. You can see it here (in Dutch).
