Brabant autumn in light of Van Gogh

0

In the coming months Brabant will be in the light of the Nuenen painter Vincent van Gogh. There are exhibitions and lectures that give a glimpse into the painter’s life, through the eyes of friends and family.

The weavers, who Van Gogh portrayed, can be admired on Sunday 20 October in Nuenen’s Vincentre Museum. You can see how the old weavers worked.

Until Sunday 12 January 2020, an exhibition and guided tours of Van Gogh will be on display in the Noord-Brabant Museum. In the week of 23 October, the Van Gogh Kerk in Nuenen will also give lectures about the painter.

More information can be found on Van Gogh kerkje  (Dutch only) and the Noord Brabants Mmuseum.

Labyrinth in Philips de Jonghpark: a posthumous gift from DJ Lady Aïda

A labyrinth of legendary Eindhoven techno DJ Lady Aïda will be unveiled in Eindhoven’s Philips de Jonghpark on Sunday. The artwork is her parting gift to the city. Lady Aïda died in 2021 as a result of breast cancer.

A maze with a circumference of 55 metres and up to 17 metres wide. That is the physical part of the artwork left to the city by the DJ – who was born with the name Aïda Spaninks. The stones of the artwork are laid in the grass so that walkers can walk along the paths. Soon to be added are a kind of radio play composed by various sound artists.

The work was financed with money from the proceeds of Aïda’s record collection and a contribution from the Stichting Cultuur Eindhoven (Eindhoven culture foundation). The opening begins Sunday at 15:00; those interested can register by sending an e-mail to projecten@rebelbass.com.

Kringloop De Kempen in Veldhoven reopens after a fire

Thrift store De Kempen will open its doors again on January 14. The store burned down completely in July last year. After the fire was extinguished, the last remains of the building were demolished because it could no longer be saved.

The morning after the fire, the thrift store volunteers immediately looked for a new location. That has now been found, the new building is at Run 4305. This means that they are still on the same industrial estate.

Pride

Ton Dietvorst, manager of the thrift store, is extremely proud. “What I find so fantastic is the resilience of our entire team. A fire like this has a huge impact on many people. Almost everything went up in smoke. Without exception, everyone put their weight behind the realisation of the new store,” he says. The new location is also larger and more modern, Dietvorst said.

The fire brigade will have the honour of opening the thrift store on January 14. This is meant symbolically to show people that a circle has been completed again.

Elderly people to debut play about life during war

0

Most of the actors have never performed on stage before. But in two weeks’ time, the curtains will open on ‘De Weg Naar Vrijheid’ (‘The Road to Freedom’), a play about life in Eindhoven during World War 2.

Under the guidance of director Lars van Asten, a group of local elderly people created the play based on their own experiences of the war. ‘Most are of the age that have experienced the aftermath of the war first-hand,’ he explains.

Anneke Kochx is one of the actors. Since starting this project, she finds herself reminiscing about the wartime more often. She recalls being in hiding with a pastor. ‘I was quite a talker. We made a small hole in the wall and if I kept my mouth shut, I was allowed to look through the hole,’ she says.

In the meantime, the group spend a lot of time in rehearsals at CKE in Eindhoven. Most of the actors can hardly imagine that the theatre will soon be full of people. They are really looking forward to it.

The play will premiere on Thursday 19th September and will run for three days. The shows are almost sold out.

Samen voor Nederland (together for the Netherlands) back protesting farmers and protest against Corona measures

Demonstrators gathered in a large group on Sunday in Eindhoven to show their support for farmers and their dissatisfaction with the Corona measures.

It was an initiative by Samen voor Nederland and started from Stadhuisplein. By noon, the square was filled with young and old protesters. They carried flags with texts such as ‘real citizens support farmers’, as well as flags bearing gravely insulting texts. The dissatisfaction among the crowd was not only because of the government’s treatment of farmers and the nitrogen policy. There were also people who expressed their aversion to “the media” and Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s corona policy. One of the best-known attendees was the foreman of Virus Truth, Willem Engel.

The protesters began their march through Eindhoven after they had been whipped up with music and speeches at the Stadhuisplein. The aim of the demonstration was to tell the government to stop bullying farmers and to end the Corona measures.

World Embassies at Dutch Design Week again

The 2019 Dutch Design Week is almost upon us. During this week, 19 to 27 October, people, including international experts, designers, and influencers in Eindhoven will take on the challenge of tackling current social issues differently.

This year, for the third time, there are six embassies, each with its own theme – Safety, Circular & Biobased Building, Sustainable Design, Health, Mobility, and Water. For each of these, a World Design Embassy has been established. Each will offer a programme with exhibitions, workshops, debates and more. Each embassy will also organise a conference, where the relevant issue will be explored in great depth.

At the Embassy of Safety, various stakeholders, including the police, attempt to answer the broad question ‘Is safety a right?’ from multiple perspectives. The Embassy of Circular & Biobased Building will explore how we can guarantee that everyone has an environmentally-friendly home in the Netherlands in the near future? Representatives from the North Brabant Province are among those looking into this. Both these embassies will be ‘housed’ in Ketelhuisplein, Strijp S.

Sustainable Design?

How can businesses, designers, and consumers make a difference? This is what the Embassy of Sustainable Design will focus on. IKEA Nederland, TU Delft, and the Design Academy Eindhoven are among the many participants trying to get to the bottom of this issue in the Innovation Powerhouse, Gloeilampenplantsoen, and Yksi Expo. These are all located on Strijp S & Strijp T.

Design talents, healthcare professionals, commercial parties, and official institutes will explore the central question – what will happen if the hospital of today no longer exists? This is one of the questions that will be featured at the Embassy of Health in the Klokgebouw, Strijp S. Partners include Philips and the Máxima Medical Centre.

Mobility as a means, not an end – this is the Embassy of Mobility’s central theme. Behind Radio Royaal in Strijp S, parties such as the City Council and NS will show how they now focus on people, and no longer purely on vehicles. And last, but not least – a creative Water Hub for knowledge sharing, inspiration, and the acceleration of innovation. This is, of course, the Embassy of Water. It will be held at Het Lab at the Campina site. Partners include Waterschap De Dommel and Brabant Water.

Marathon Eindhoven, much more than running, this weekend

0

We believe that most of you, that are interested in long distance running, know that the weekend of October 13 and 14 is the big marathon weekend. So we are not suggesting to sigh up, coz you have done that already, but we want to point out that you dont need to run to participate…

Also this year, and maybe more than in previous editions, there are all kind of activities organised around the event. Several places have a special program, e.g. de stadsbrouwerij, and there is lots of music and fun around the route, especially at Stratumseind.

As both days host various races, starting Saturday late afternoon, almost all the time there is some excitement along the route, find the exact program for more details. So its a great way to perhaps get to know Eindhoven a bit better, and somehow contribute to this great event and perhaps run next year, or the year after, or..

Bringing locals and internationals together with ’30 Seconds’

The popular game 30 Seconds is used in Eindhoven as a tool to facilitate meeting people from other countries as well as the Dutch.

Maybe you have played the ’30 Seconds’ game at your house during the holidays: ‘guess as many topics as possible that are cryptically described in under 30 seconds’. A super-fast game that often gets a lot of people laughing.

The familiarity and accessibility of ’30 Seconds’ are the starting points for organizers Frank van der Vleuten and Irene Martens of SamenUITagenda and Eindhoven News. They organise a monthly event in The Student Hotel in which the popular game is centralised. “Whether you speak Dutch or can only understand English,” says Frank van der Vleuten, “the design of the game is an easy way for everyone to laugh with each other.”

These evenings are not only organised because of the popularity, but also to contribute to the integration within Eindhoven. “At Eindhoven News and SamenUITagenda we notice that there is a great need for activities for internationals to interact with the Eindhoveners,” says Irene Martens. “The game brings local and international Eindhoven people into contact with each other by playing in mixed groups, with the result that cultures learn to open up to each other and get to know each other.” The next ’30 Seconds Game Night will be organized on 8 January 2019 at 8 pm in The Student Hotel in Eindhoven. “Above that, it is a pleasant way to improve your Dutch and English, adds Irene.”
