Muziekgebouw and Philharmonic to work together more intensively

The Eindhoven Muziekgebouw and ‘Philharmonie Zuidnederland’ (philharmonic orchestra) will be joining forces for another four years. The two organisations want to join forces further.

Until now, they have mainly worked together on the rental of halls and the use of all kinds of facilities. But the two organisations now also want to cooperate more intensively in the areas of marketing and cultural education. Furthermore, both institutions want to explore the possibilities of using digital applications to reach a wider audience.

“I am looking forward to exploring all the possibilities of strengthening each other, together with the Muziekgebouw. Making classical symphonic music accessible to everyone, that is the objective”, Intendant Stefan Rosu, of the Philharmonie Zuidnederland, says.

The new cooperation agreement will run until the summer of 2026.

Professor Bert Meijer wins the Van ‘t Hoff medal 2022

The medal is awarded once every ten years for outstanding and groundbreaking work in the field of chemistry, excluding biochemistry. Bert Meijer is the second recipient ever. The prize was first awarded in 2011.

”I am very honoured.”-Bert Meijer

Meijer happily shares “I see it as a wonderful appreciation for the research that the many students, PhD students and postdocs in our group have carried out over the decades.”

Meijer receives the prize because he has been working on stereochemistry for many years. He introduced the chemical form, which made him world-renowned. Stereochemistry is the study of the spatial structure of compounds and molecules and the consequences of how substances react to each other. With this contribution, Meijer more than met the criteria to receive the medal. The winner’s work must therefore be excellent and groundbreaking.

Rightful winner

According to the jury chairman Wybren Jan Buma. ”Meijer is regarded worldwide as one of the founders in his field. His work has pioneered the mechanisms underlying chemical self-assembly. He has shown that these materials offer unique opportunities to successfully develop solutions.”

Medal

The medal is named after the Dutch chemist JH van ‘t Hoff. The Dutch chemist won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1901. The first winner of this award, Ben Feringa, went on to win a Nobel Prize in 2016.  As a result of the pandemic, the ceremony took place a year later than planned.

Carnaval organisers share doubts and challenges

0

The organisers of the yearly Lampegatse (Eindhoven) Carnaval are contemplating whether the event will take place next year. “We are trying to think of a safe alternative, however the current limitations make it challenging.”

A celebration where all tables are positioned to maintain adequate distancing? Should it move online? Alternatively, Carnaval is postponed to summer in the hopes of a vaccine by that time. Tim de Zeeuw thinks aloud about the possibilities for the event to take place within the next six months. He is chairman of the Carnaval association d’Hoane and an organiser of Elluf Elluf, an event signalling the kick-off of the Carnaval season in Eindhoven.

The problems

“We haven’t made a decision yet, but the eleventh of the eleventh is fast approaching. We have to guarantee safety. We’re considering alternatives, tables spaced to maintain distancing. That presents it’s own challenges, especially when alcohol is involved,” explains De Zeeuw. The event in February also poses a problem. Before the main event, a smaller event at the Stadspaviljoen takes place. Usually with an estimated 800 people in attendance and 18 bands performing. It entails a lot of singing, dancing and drinking. Not exactly corona-proof. I don’t know how we’re going to organise it. Everything that makes a celebration fun is becoming more difficult to organise.”

Time pressure

Ivo Soetens, the chairman of the Eindhoven Carnaval Federation, is also concerned. If Carnaval can take place, how would it happen? His organisation is amongst others responsible for events in the main tent on Market Square, the parade and the Federation Ball, where the new city prince is announced. “Preferably, one would wait as long as possible to know what you’re in for. The anti-corona virus measures are still changing and the Regional Safety organisation (Veiligheidsregio Zuid-Oost Brabant) hasn’t made a decision regarding Carnaval yet. Unfortunately, we can’t wait too long as everyone involved must start with preparations.”

Agenda

The Eindhoven municipality reports that Carnaval is on the agenda at Regional Safety. It’s unclear when a decision will be made. Soetens: “It depends on the event, how many considerations are involved in the organisation. For the large-scale events, we certainly need to know by the middle of September.”

If necessary,  postpone to summer

It still is very uncertain. Behind the scenes many meetings are scheduled, also amongst the federations and the municipality. Soetens and De Zeeuw are convinced that Carnaval will be celebrated next year. Even if it’s on a smaller scale that usual. “History shows that Carnaval often happens spontaneously. During the war, Carnaval was also celebrated,” says Soetens. De Zeeuw: “If necessary, we could postpone it to summer in the hope that a vaccine becomes available in the winter or spring.

Easter bunny hunt for people with little money

Adults looking for Easter bunnies in the garden of Petruskerk (Petrus church) in Eindhoven. It was a remarkable sight on Saturday afternoon, but it really happened.

It was something new that Hugo van Rooij from Stichting (Z)onderdak ((with(out) roof foundation) had come up with to give people with little money a happy Easter. Everyone was allowed to hand in one Easter bunny they found and it had a number on it. That number could be exchanged for a prize.

“I had gigantic Easter bunnies as a prize, but also money”, De Rooij said. “The main prize was even €50”. He was not afraid that people would attack each other for such cash prizes. He was right, every participant was happy with his or her gift.

Like a child

The thirty to forty participants meet every Saturday afternoon in Petruskerk. They then get soup and sandwiches. This time De Rooij had come up with something extra to get these people in the Easter mood: looking for Easter bunnies.

Participant Hans with his reddish curls felt like a child again when he searched the ground for hidden Easter bunnies. “This is so much fun, a bit of treasure hunting. It’s great that this is being organised”.

After handing in, his find turned out to be worth a gigantic chocolate Easter bunny. “Great! Then I won’t arrive empty-handed tomorrow at my three adult sons”, he beamed. “I’ll give this Easter Bunny three minutes and it’ll be gone tomorrow”.

Benefactor

70-year-old Joke was also very happy when she came to hand in her found Easter bunny. “I’m so curious to see what I won”. She impatiently unpacked her envelope with the prize she had won and could hardly believe it. The envelope contained €50.

“I’m going to give them to the homeless. I’m going to buy socks and underpants and I’m going to buy cups of coffee for them”. She said she doesn’t need the money. “Making other people happy makes me happy. They need it more than I do”.

Meanwhile, Danio unpacked his winning envelope. “€20, wow, that’s what I’m going to eat from today and tomorrow. I don’t have that much money so I’m very happy with this”.

Overjoyed

In the meantime, Eindhoven benefactor Hugo de Rooij looks back with satisfaction. “This makes me so happy. Let’s face it, these people deserve to have a happy Easter. And I never worried for a moment that it would get out of hand, because there is money to be won. Someone just said that he was overjoyed with his huge chocolate Easter egg, because money is just money”.

Festival plus a ‘new course’ to mark Muziekgebouw’s 30th

In September, it will be the thirtieth anniversary of the Muziekgebouw. In honor of the jubilee, the theater is organizing a festival while also embarking on a ‘new course’

With this new course, the theater wants to reach a wider audience. A right step in the direction to solve its budget constraints.

“We have embarked on a new path with the development plan,” says director Edo Righini. “To achieve this, we are broadening the programming and involving different target groups in the development of new programs and initiatives. In this way we want to reach a larger and also broader part of society.”

Balance

“At the same time, our focus is on creating a Muziekgebouw where cultural content and cultural entrepreneurship are in balance,” Reghini continues. “The first results of this new strategy give us confidence that we are well on the way.”

Kick off

The anniversary season will kick off on September 10. The Philharmonie Zuidnederland will present a broad musical program with various special guests, the Muziekgebouw said. In addition, as part of the thirtieth anniversary, various celebrities will visit the concert hall during the year.

The legendary soul bands ‘The Temptations’ and ‘The Four Tops’ will be performing at the end of October. A surprise program by Hungarian pianist András Schiff is planned in February.

Sunday Funday

The Sunday Funday festival is being kicked off a day after the 30th anniversary. The Muziekgebouw plans to give lesser-known artists a stage with this recurring event. Less well-known performances have been less well-visited since corona, Muziekgebouw director Edo Righini previously told Studio040 . Sunday Funday must put an end to that.

World Embassies at Dutch Design Week again

The 2019 Dutch Design Week is almost upon us. During this week, 19 to 27 October, people, including international experts, designers, and influencers in Eindhoven will take on the challenge of tackling current social issues differently.

This year, for the third time, there are six embassies, each with its own theme – Safety, Circular & Biobased Building, Sustainable Design, Health, Mobility, and Water. For each of these, a World Design Embassy has been established. Each will offer a programme with exhibitions, workshops, debates and more. Each embassy will also organise a conference, where the relevant issue will be explored in great depth.

At the Embassy of Safety, various stakeholders, including the police, attempt to answer the broad question ‘Is safety a right?’ from multiple perspectives. The Embassy of Circular & Biobased Building will explore how we can guarantee that everyone has an environmentally-friendly home in the Netherlands in the near future? Representatives from the North Brabant Province are among those looking into this. Both these embassies will be ‘housed’ in Ketelhuisplein, Strijp S.

Sustainable Design?

How can businesses, designers, and consumers make a difference? This is what the Embassy of Sustainable Design will focus on. IKEA Nederland, TU Delft, and the Design Academy Eindhoven are among the many participants trying to get to the bottom of this issue in the Innovation Powerhouse, Gloeilampenplantsoen, and Yksi Expo. These are all located on Strijp S & Strijp T.

Design talents, healthcare professionals, commercial parties, and official institutes will explore the central question – what will happen if the hospital of today no longer exists? This is one of the questions that will be featured at the Embassy of Health in the Klokgebouw, Strijp S. Partners include Philips and the Máxima Medical Centre.

Mobility as a means, not an end – this is the Embassy of Mobility’s central theme. Behind Radio Royaal in Strijp S, parties such as the City Council and NS will show how they now focus on people, and no longer purely on vehicles. And last, but not least – a creative Water Hub for knowledge sharing, inspiration, and the acceleration of innovation. This is, of course, the Embassy of Water. It will be held at Het Lab at the Campina site. Partners include Waterschap De Dommel and Brabant Water.

Cultural sector in dire straits

The corona crisis has hit Eindhoven culture sector hard. Additional government support is needed to stay afloat, the directors of the Muziekgebouw and Parktheater say.

“We got a €3 million grant, but we earn €7 million. That income evaporated after mid-March. All the while you try to keep everyone employed. We need help with that. But that help will not get us all the way. We’re going to struggle because of this for years to come”, Giel Pastoor, Parktheater’s director, says.

Expenses simply continue, but the large organisations has all but lost their hospitality revenues and sponsorships. It is also all hands on deck at the Muziekgebouw. The extra financial support from the central government and the Municipality is sorely needed.

No income, but costs continue

“We can’t survive without government support. Ticket sales, catering, sponsoring has all fallen away. But the fixed costs continue,” says Wim Vringer, director of the Muziekgebouw.

The national government has already spent €300 million on the country’s ailing culture sector. Eindhoven City Council’s also put €3 million aside for this sector. But, according to Wim, that’s not enough. “That’s why pressure must remain on the national government to offer money for rent compensation. That’s the biggest problem for us, with a rent of €2 million per year”.

Cultural stages are now allowed to admit at most 30 people per performance. Next month, this number will increase to 100. It’s not profitable yet. Natlab cinema’s already had to lay off employees.

‘We might have to take drastic steps’

And if the crisis lasts much longer, the same will happen at Parktheater and Muziekgebouw. “It’s nonsensical to think that if your programme and the audience shrinks, the organisation won’t be affected. In the long run, we may have to take horrible steps”, Pastoor says.

Parktheater and the Muziekgebouw were closed for three months. This week the two institutions will open their doors again for the first time.

400 Ukrainian children forget worries at sports day Philips Stadium

Ukrainian children from schools in Eindhoven could forget all their worries for a while. They were invited to a sports and games day in the Philips Stadium. The initiative of companies from the region was much appreciated by the participating children: “Very sweet that they organise this for us”.

The children have missed sports since they were forced to flee their homeland. “I played in a special volleyball team. I have very good memories of that”, Lina says. Zhenya also missed sports, also because she was in many sports: ”I like basketball, football and dancing. I like a lot of sports”.

Forget worries

For the organisation it was especially important that the children had a pleasant afternoon: ”We have ensured that there is something nice for everyone to do. Then all of the children can have a pleasant afternoon that allows them to forget their worries for a while”, enthusiastic volunteer Jacline de Kort says.

Chairman of the Partnerfonds (partner fund) of Brainport companies Staf Depla also mentions the importance of events like these: ”We have to help the children to get on with their lives. We do that with an event like this, but also with other projects. We have to help them as much as we help our own children”.

Gratitude

The children are very grateful for this event: “It is very kind that they organise this for us”, Zhenya says. Lina is also happy: ”I understand that it is expensive to organise this kind of thing. Therefore, I am very grateful that people want to do this for us”.

Back End, exposition by Dries Depoorter in MU

0

What do privacy, artificial intelligence and digital connectedness have in common? They are all interwoven in the work of Dries Depoorter. In Back End he shows how boundaries can dissolved with a few simple interventions. This fascinating exposition runs from July 20 to September 23rd in MU, at Strijp S.

The exposition is very diverse, dynamic and interactive. It handles about relevant questions around how human creativity and machine learning, private and public, entertainment and morality all blend together. Anything can be linked and the actual connections are visible; the cables, the plugs, the way the software works. Depoorter’s play with technology, access and data analysis creates a sense of unease. Ten recent and new works will be on show in MU from 20 July until 23 September. “You can say they are critical… and, well, I think they are not entirely without humour”.

There is a huge variety of installation, machines, images that impact everybodies lives. So there is a lot to discover, learn, experience, questions will be answered and new ones will arise.. quite possible it may change your view on modern technology and use of data.
