Most of the actors have never performed on stage before. But in two weeks’ time, the curtains will open on ‘De Weg Naar Vrijheid’ (‘The Road to Freedom’), a play about life in Eindhoven during World War 2.

Under the guidance of director Lars van Asten, a group of local elderly people created the play based on their own experiences of the war. ‘Most are of the age that have experienced the aftermath of the war first-hand,’ he explains.

Anneke Kochx is one of the actors. Since starting this project, she finds herself reminiscing about the wartime more often. She recalls being in hiding with a pastor. ‘I was quite a talker. We made a small hole in the wall and if I kept my mouth shut, I was allowed to look through the hole,’ she says.

In the meantime, the group spend a lot of time in rehearsals at CKE in Eindhoven. Most of the actors can hardly imagine that the theatre will soon be full of people. They are really looking forward to it.

The play will premiere on Thursday 19th September and will run for three days. The shows are almost sold out.
