Eindhoven welcomes some 900 new ‘Nederlanders’

0

906 Eindhoven residents from 86 different countries received Dutch nationality this year. During a naturalisation meeting, they were put in the spotlight in the Muziekgebouw.

The new residents of the city come from all corners of the world. The three countries where most new residents who received a Dutch passport this year have their origin are Syria (174), India (162) and Turkey (55).

The memorable moment was celebrated with snacks, drinks and speeches. “They have had an integration course and learned the language. Let’s make this a special day too”, said deputy mayor Rik Thijs.

“I never thought I would give up my Indian nationality for a Dutch passport. But that is happening now. I have felt very welcome in my environment, with friends and colleagues”,  says one of the 906 new Dutch people who have found a place in Eindhoven.

Artists ‘doing their thing’ on pillars in Heuvel shopping centre

A large pillar as a blank canvas and paint whatever you want. Four artists took on four pillars for the urban art project UPRIGHT in Eindhoven’s Heuvel shopping centre.

Each artist was given their own pillar and the design was up to them. In total, there were almost 200 entries. This allowed the jury to make a selection. Each pillar was therefore painted in a different style. You can see the abstract and organic work of Andre HZS. But also the colourful and illustrative work of Kid Kura. Realistic animals and plants were painted on Nina Valkhoff’s pillar. Space was also given to new talent.

Upright
Jasper van Es, founder of the project, believes it is important that street artists are also be treated seriously and paid. And that they are given space to tell their own story.

“After all, in street art this is not at all obvious. They are often told exactly what to put on a wall and a design first goes past the marketing department. In the end, it’s more like an advertising mural. In my projects, I always want to challenge urban artists to search for their own artistic identity. And in this project I succeeded. Each pillar is really almost a portrait of its creator”.

Grey streets get vivid colours

‘A flying train in space,’ it is one of the new graffiti paintings in Achterom, the connection between Keizersgracht and Kerkstraat in the heart of Eindhoven. A place that normally looks a bit drab is now filled with graffiti spray cans, brushes and fanatical artists.

The action is a side-event of ‘Step in the Arena’, the well-known graffiti festival in Eindhoven’s Berenkuil. Organiser Vincent Huibers is pleased with the initiative. “This way we give more colour to places that look a bit rundown. That makes me very happy”.
One of the graffiti artists is also having a good time. He talks about his latest creation. “It is a kind of flying train flying through space. I think it turned out very nicely”.

Step out of the Arena

During the weekend of 9-11 June, graffiti took centre stage at Berenkuil, where graffiti artists from home and abroad got to work during the Step in the Arena event. So now it is the turn of Achterom, a small street somewhere else in Eindhoven. “The Step out of the Arena side-event is a result of last weekend, where more than 30 artists got busy in the Berenkuil roundabout. Some of these artists are now continuing a little longer, also by request of the municipality”, organiser Vincent says.

“It’s really quite an improvement,” an employee of Dynamo Eindhoven says. “The drab atmosphere is livened up, they did a good job”. According to her, graffiti art fits Eindhoven’s image. “It has a lot of atmosphere and a nice vibe, they may do this in more places if you ask me”.

First female employees of Philips honoured

The ‘Maria Boogersstraat’ and the ‘Adriana van Buullaan’ could just become new street names on Strijp-S. The municipality of Eindhoven would like to honour the first two female employees employed by the company.

They both started in 1891, when the electronics group also started in Eindhoven. Gerard and Anton Philips, who formed the basis of the company, mainly hired girls to assemble light bulbs. Van Buul and Boogers (both born in 1879) therefore as the very first.

Lamp makers

Many companies are now trying to find a good balance between men and women in the workplace. “Philips has been involved in this from the outset,” says Rik Thijs, alderman for public space. “Since its foundation, the company has employed many women who were specially recruited to make lamps.”

Many employees in the early days of Philips were called ‘lamp makers’. A statue was once erected for that group. The municipality now wants to express its appreciation to the first two employees with the street names.

The municipality is currently looking for relatives of both women.

Construction Glow started again, this time also in region

The light artworks for Glow are currently being built again. This time not only in Eindhoven, but also in Best, Geldrop, Waalre, Mierlo and Oirschot.

Starting Saturday 11 November, light projects can also be seen in those municipalities for eight days. For example, in Waalre there is a visual projection on the town hall, in Mierlo the windmill is illuminated and in Geldrop the Weverijmuseum (weaving museum) will be involved.

Starting shot

Saturday is the official starting shot of the Glow. Then director Ronald Ramakers and Mayor Dijsselbloem will open the light festival. “So for the first time in almost two decades, GLOW will cross Eindhoven’s city limits. Under the name Glowing Horizons, we will bring light art to surrounding villages”, Ramakers says.

Route

The Glow route in Eindhoven this year is five kilometres, and thus more compact than previous years. The route runs through the station, 18 Septemberplein, Emmasingel, Wilhelminaplein, Bilderdijklaan, Victoriapark and Stadhuisplein. A total of 24 works of light art can be seen, by national and international artists.

Accelerating our Smart Society @ High Tech Campus, Eindhoven

In recent years, we have seamlessly progressed towards connected-communities. As such, an ever-increasing wave of new smart products is meshing into our lives. Welcome to the new era of Smart Society.

Eindhoven’s High Tech Campus (HTC) currently holds the top spot on Innovation in Europe. As a matter of fact, HTC is quickly becoming the driving force on several key technologies in the global arena.

On 9th November 2018, HTC hosted the very first “High Tech Next: Accelerating our Smart Society”. HH Constantijn van Oranje’s presence clearly marks the sheer importance. He proudly shared his views on the ground-breaking technologies and leadership in The Netherlands.   It was a full-day event, with several world-class speakers from technology giants such as imec, Huawei, Philips, TomTom, IBM, and VRee. Coupled with enthusiastic questions from the audience, we had a remarkable experience.

Smart society

What is a Smart Society? Does it frighten some of us? Indeed, this was the starting point of the day, with John Baekelmans. He mesmerized us with examples of city planning at Antwerp, where he is launching his trials. The “smart zones” are fitted with cameras and intelligent lighting. Everything is connected and working together to enhance social lives in the neighborhood, whilst maintaining personal privacy. He shared his vision of the distant future with connected technologies embedded in our daily lives. We would have healthier lives. And all the more with intelligent infrastructure, we would be able to prevent floods, traffic jams and improve air quality. In short, he prepared us for worry-free life in the near future.

In the last years, we see that Data Traffic has more than tripled. However, a tenfold increase is predicted in the coming 5 years. Integrated healthcare, connected home appliances, robotics, drones, driverless cars etc will demand a new infrastructure. Fortunately, the upcoming 5G wireless system addresses this point. This is the efficient platform necessary to manage this futuristic landscape. Thankfully, we had Jurjen Veldhuizen and Jeroen Thijsen, to reassure us. Yes, we are on track with the right technology for the coming years.

Driverless Cars

How could we discuss Smart Society, without touching on driverless cars? We had the pleasure of Harold Goddijn, to share his views on “Mapping the Road to Autonomous Driving”. Eventually, the driverless car would be a connected system of “car-cloud-car” loop. This would be a live-feed system to optimize the journey, with time, energy and road safety. Wonder if we would still need a driving license?

Artificial intelligence is the future

Virtual Reality (VR) is not just for gamers. Menno Bischops shared several examples on successful applications of VR. Particularly, his system focusses on value-for-money.  He proudly shared that the Dutch military was using his system for training purposes. Moreover, Bischops sees huge potential opportunities with VR adapted for many other industries and applications.

But now, are we losing ourselves? Are we in control with all these daunting artificial intelligence-based technologies? Though many worry about the impact, Christian Kromme is positive. He explained the parallels between the 7 phases in human evolution to the 7 phases in our technological evolution. He believes that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be the tsunami that brings us into a new era. Furthermore, this new technology will advance humanity ten times more than any of the previous technological phases.  More importantly, he reassures us that we are heading towards a more meaningful and purposeful future. Perhaps to start all over again, when we colonize other planets!

Sign-up early for the upcoming events at the High Tech Campus.

See you there!

DTW 2019: innovations, kids’ tech events, and lobbying for women

A live robotic surgery, thousands of students getting acquainted with new innovations, and an event to attract more women to the technology sector – this is a selection from the Dutch Technology Week’s (DTW) programme, which starts on Monday.

DTW is a week in which companies and knowledge institutions come together and network and where young people are made enthusiastic about technology. It is a week where visitors can get acquainted with the innovative power of the high-tech region of Eindhoven.

Activities are planned at various places in the Brainport region and beyond. New this year is Female Tech Heroes at the High Tech Campus. Former European Commissioner, Neelie Kroes, and 600 women will delve into the technology sector and the possibilities for women to get started in that sector.

New events

There is also an election debate with political parties in the Klokgebouw. What Europe can do for the tech companies in the Netherlands will be discussed. There is a technology event for young people in Breda too.

In addition to new activities, there are also DTW annual events. For example, this year too, there is the Night of the Nerds in the Klokgebouw. Here 5.000 high school students can experience new technological developments.

Kapsalon Theatre: without an audience, but to be watched live

Parktheater Eindhoven participates with a variety of performances today in the national campaign ‘Kapsalon Theater’ (hairdressing theatre), to protest against the forced continuous closure of the cultural sector. Without an audience, but with a livestream and broadcast via Studio040.

Because of the national campaign, Parktheater is transformed into a hair salon for one day. The Barber Station Eindhoven is moving their business to the great hall of Parktheater. During their haircut, clients will be entertained by artist performances. This way, the artists can still practice their profession within the permitted measures and they have the space to spread this important message. In addition, the theatre performers will receive a haircut to give them a boost in a playful way.

Artists visiting the hair salon include Tigre Blanco, Rob Scheepers, Jeroens Clan, The Slampampers, Björn van der Doelen, Anneke van Giersbergen, Thijs van de Meeberg, Flamenco Encuentros, Camilla Blue, Ruud Borgers, Magic Tom & Yuri, Oscar Kocken (host) and Quintijn Lohman (side-kick).

The campaign is part of a national protest that was set up by, among others, cabaret artist Diederik Ebbinge. In many municipalities, theatres did not get permission for the campaign, but as far as Ebbinge is concerned, the campaign goes on anyway. In talkshow M on NPO1 last night, he said that the cultural sector, as the “goodie two-shoes” has decided “not to be that any more”.

The campaign can be seen from 10:00 to 17:00 on the website of Parktheater, on television at Studio040 and through the website and mobile app of Studio040.

Calling all ‘green fingers’ to the Groenexpo Bloem & Tuin

People with green fingers can indulge themselves at the Gulbergen estate in Nuenen until the end of the week. The ‘Groenexpo Bloem & Tuin’ will be held there for the 28th time. There are about 80 stalls scattered around the site with colourful flowers, mermaids and other garden accessories.

A visitor says : “I get my ideas here, but I just buy in the store. Saves a lot of lugging.” Better put on your walking shoes if you want to see all the latest gardening gadgets. If you want to see all the stalls, you have to walk almost two kilometers. “It really is a day out for people,” says co-organiser Arvid Schellens. “Visitors come from far and wide to visit the market. Mainly people from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, but also from other countries.”

Competition with Keukenhof?

Will tourists from now on be eager to see this expo instead of Keukenhof? “Well, I’ve never been to Keukenhof, but it’s true that a lot of people come here – young and old,” said the co-organiser.

The Groenexpo Tuin & Bloem can be visited until Sunday. The organization expects to welcome about 40,000 visitors
