Strijp-S open-air cinema started

0

At Strijp-S, the open-air cinema season started last Friday.

Friday and Saturday, film enthusiasts unfolded their chairs at Natlab to watch “Moonlight” and “C’est la vie” for free.

Till the end of August, more films are scheduled. Provided the weather remains as nice as the past few weeks, of course.

Next films scheduled at Natlab’s open-air cinema: “King of the Belgians”(Friday evening) and “Florence Foster Jenkins” (Saturday). To find out what is in store till the end of August, scroll down and use the link to Natlab’s site.

Natlab states: “This summer we show films in the open air again in July and August. The large screen is set up in our courtyard. All outdoor films are free of charge, snacks and drinks are for sale at the bar. Be there early for one of the few places on our benches – or even smarter: bring your own folding chair.”

Please note, Natlab is currently running its special Summer and Flamenco Festival as well.

Park Hilaria is in town till Aug 12th

0

The yearly ‘Park Hilaria’ has started last Friday and is open until Sunday 12th. 90 rides and attractions over a 600 meter stretch are awaiting the public to join them. There are also plenty of foodstalls, terraces and many performances of, mainly Dutch, artists and DJ’s.  The entrance is free and its in the Southern part of the Kennedy laan.

In the previous century Eindhoven knew many local ‘kermisses’, almost every neighborhood had their own kermis. Some bigger then others, but in general they had the appeal of local fairgrounds of smaller towns. Very nice for the locals, but not something to  attract many remote people. However in 2002 the local government decided to group it all together, to have the appeal of a big city fair. Therefore they created Park Hilaria, that combines all fairs together and therefore brings fun for every one, has their own terraces and places to eat. It now takes place for the 17th time.

There are also many artists. They mainly focus on the ‘typical’ Dutch entertainment and songs. Maybe not everybodies taste, but it gives a good idea of the Dutch culture as its still alive with the common people. Also traditional Dutch snacks like poffertjes and typical ‘kermis food’ is present. As the entree is free, and kids always seems to love it, it sure its worth a visit.

Happy Sunday Fest in Philips de Jonghpark

0

The weather changed a bit, but the summer isn’t over yet.. that means that still quite a few festivals are there to come. This particular one will take place on Sunday 19th of August.

As the name suggests its a happy, relaxed, lazy Sunday party.. but, be warned, its not too lazy, as there are many exciting tribute bands performing, what about these names: Amy Winehouse, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and several others. Sure its not the real thing, but be assured you will hear some great music, and see some awesome shows.

Apart from lots of great artists, there is a market, foodtrucks and there are craft beers. All this in one of the most beautiful parks of Eindhoven, created and donated by the Philips family in 1920. The festival starts at 12.00 and last till about 22.00. The entrance is free!

23 500 runners expected on Sunday

0

The Eindhoven Marathon is expecting some 23 500 runners to run in the event on Sunday. This is about the same number as last year.

Most of the participants will be running in the 21km half marathon. There will be 8 600 participants running this distance on Sunday. With 5 000 runners, the 5km City Run is also popular. On Sunday, the other runners will participate in the relay race, the mini-marathon, and the full marathon of just over 42 kilometers.

On Saturday, there will also be a walking event. This event includes the 5KM4All, which also allows people with disabilities to participate. On Saturday night 3 000 runners will run 10km by night.

On Sunday, the Kenyan Kirwa and Ethiopians Assefa and Robi are considered favourites.

The marathon will cause a hindrance because of the many roadblocks. Here, drivers can see what to expect. Many buses will not be riding either. Until 13:00 the buses n the lines 8, 11, 14, 18, 19, 317, 318, 319, 402 and 403 will not ride on the motorways. They will only stop at stops within the ring. After 13:00 everything would run normally as per schedule.

Eindhoven marathon: like Carnival

0

This weekend, the Eindhoven Marathon event not only welcomed top athletes. Young runners completed a mini-marathon. Amateur-runners compared the event to Carnival.

Mini-marathon: running with mom and dad

Eindhoven’s mini-marathon welcomed over 3,000 participants. Children from various primary schools took part. Mom or dad and teachers accompanied them.

Most of the young participants had prepared well. These included pupils of primary school “De Boog”. For weeks, they had run around the school to train for this annual running event.

Looking tanned, wearing special school-shirts and participation numbers, pupils appeared at the mini-marathon start. Five-year-old David Bosch was among them. He was ready “for the real marathon”, as he called it. Like others, he had trained for weeks.

Alderman Stijn Steenbakkers (Sports) and the special children’s mayor fired the starting pistol. A mini-marathon is the length of an English mile; roughly 1.6 kilometers. The children and their supervisors ran along the Hermanus Boexstraat and finished at the Vestdijk.

Of course, family members lined the route to encourage participants. The sun also helped. A few of the young participants ran like fanatics. Others took their time, as surroundings impressed.

Nevertheless: everybody who finished received a medal. That’s what a mini-marathon is about: encouragement and reward. Participants displayed their medals proudly.

When asked if it was fun, David only nodded. “But I’m pretty tired now. And I’m hungry.” Hardly surprising: running 1.6 kilometers on small legs, is quite a distance.

Like Carnival

Meanwhile, grown-up runners remarked, Eindhoven’s marathon is the nicest one of the Netherlands. One participant said: “It’s like Carnival!”

Top athletes spurted ahead of amateur participants; or had even already finished. It did not matter. For  amateur runners, this event is all about trying to achieve personal records, or just complete the distance.

This year, there were about 23.500 participants. They ran various distances. Many wanted to complete the route in a personal record.. Encouraged by family and friends and random Eindhoven residents, they ran the route.

“It’s one big party,” another runner stated, “people are encouraging me from each side, great!

Along the route, beer flew abundantly. The Eindhoven Marathon proves again, it not only attracts top athletes and amateur runners. It combines running with the usual warm, welcoming Brabant-Burgundian conviviality.

One and a half truck full of toys and 1600 euros collected with radio campaign in Eindhoven

0

The annual toy campaign of Radio JND collected 1600 euros and one and a half truck full of toys this year.

The last few days the DJs made 72 hours of live radio from the Stadhuisplein in Eindhoven. The aim of the campaign was to raise as much money and as many toys as possible for Stichting Speelcadeau in Eindhoven. That foundation gives children from poorer families a nice St. Nicholas’ eve.

Most of the money was collected through the auction of a football from PSV, with signatures of the players. It was auctioned for three hundred euros.

Winter festival at the Grote Beek

0

At the De Grote Beek estate, a so-called Winter Festival will start on Tuesday.

There is a pop-up restaurant in a large barn. The proceeds are for a good cause: animals in healthcare.

Aside the large American barn, there will also be a living nativity scene. Santa Claus will also show his face from time to time. It will be possible to have lunch and dinner and the proceeds will go to Dieren in de Zorg of the GGzE (mental healthcare).

In the treatment of clients it sometimes helps to use animals, says the healthcare institution. Such treatments are often not reimbursed, that’s the reason money will be raised for this.

Christmas baubles for and by children with cancer at St. Anna Hospital in Geldrop

0

A wall full of Christmas balls drawn by children with cancer: at the St. Anna Hospital in Geldrop there is such a wall since Monday.

Drawings
The Christmas baubles come from residents of Geldrop and surroundings. They have handed in old Christmas baubles at garden center GroenRijk and bought KiKa Christmas baubles. There are drawings on the Christmas baubles made by four children with cancer. A few pupils of the Eenbes elementary school Sint Jozef have helped set up the wall and then presented it to Ingrid Wolf, chairman of the board of directors.

The proceeds of the purchased Christmas baubles at GroenRijk go to the charity. The garden center together with other centers aim to collect 250,000 euros.

Bringing locals and internationals together with ’30 Seconds’

The popular game 30 Seconds is used in Eindhoven as a tool to facilitate meeting people from other countries as well as the Dutch.

Maybe you have played the ’30 Seconds’ game at your house during the holidays: ‘guess as many topics as possible that are cryptically described in under 30 seconds’. A super-fast game that often gets a lot of people laughing.

The familiarity and accessibility of ’30 Seconds’ are the starting points for organizers Frank van der Vleuten and Irene Martens of SamenUITagenda and Eindhoven News. They organise a monthly event in The Student Hotel in which the popular game is centralised. “Whether you speak Dutch or can only understand English,” says Frank van der Vleuten, “the design of the game is an easy way for everyone to laugh with each other.”

These evenings are not only organised because of the popularity, but also to contribute to the integration within Eindhoven. “At Eindhoven News and SamenUITagenda we notice that there is a great need for activities for internationals to interact with the Eindhoveners,” says Irene Martens. “The game brings local and international Eindhoven people into contact with each other by playing in mixed groups, with the result that cultures learn to open up to each other and get to know each other.” The next ’30 Seconds Game Night will be organized on 8 January 2019 at 8 pm in The Student Hotel in Eindhoven. “Above that, it is a pleasant way to improve your Dutch and English, adds Irene.”
