Eat tacos and watch Mexico-Germany

Coming Sunday (17 June 2018) you can enjoy tacos and the match between Mexico and Germany together. This will happen at Wall Street, Stadhuisplein, Eindhoven. The tacos will be from Mis Amores Tortilleria & Art.

From 15:00h onwards, they will be offering Pastel Azteca and a variety of tacos, and the match between Mexico and Germany will be screened so you won’t miss anything. The event will be till 21.30h.

It is the second time Mis Amores Tortilleria & Art have this cooperation with Wall Street (a pop-up restaurant and temporarily exposition space).

Mis Amores Tortilleria & Art was founded by five Mexicans living and working in the Netherlands. Their passion for Mexican culture and authentic Mexican food were the main drivers to start a small business related to the elaboration of corn tortilla and the promotion of Mexican artists. As entrepreneurs in a foreign country, the process to establish a company was not simple and it took them some months to establish. The process to produce tortillas was the second learning curve to be climbed because as Mexicans they expect the taste of their products to be as good as in their native country.

The final goal is to establish a Mexican food restaurant in Eindhoven, but first, the five Mexican partners would love to offer their tortillas in the city that embraced them to live here. And if you can help them to diversify their business or know about a location, they are open for opportunities.

Tortillas are made of corn, it is the most consumed cereal in Mexico. Corn tortillas are very nutritive, rich in fibres, vitamins, and minerals. It is also gluten-free. The original process for the elaboration of original Mexican tortillas is a Prehispanic process where corn is boiled with calcium oxide and it is called “nixtamalization”.

To order corn tortillas and to have them delivered for free or if you like to know more, you can find more information on their website.

The already vibrant Strijp S area, has another nice attraction this summer. During most weekends there are outdoor movie projections, in the NatLab patio, that you can attend for free. So you can pick your favorite movies from their program, and enjoy them while being surrounded by stars, on the big screen, and above you as well (and perhaps in the audience, who knows).

They will start on Friday July 13th with the Oscar winning movie Moonlight. Check the rest of their program, which is high quality and quite diverse, and make it in a great evening, perhaps combined with any of the other nice places and activities that Strijp S has to offer.

Park Hilaria is in town till Aug 12th

0

The yearly ‘Park Hilaria’ has started last Friday and is open until Sunday 12th. 90 rides and attractions over a 600 meter stretch are awaiting the public to join them. There are also plenty of foodstalls, terraces and many performances of, mainly Dutch, artists and DJ’s.  The entrance is free and its in the Southern part of the Kennedy laan.

In the previous century Eindhoven knew many local ‘kermisses’, almost every neighborhood had their own kermis. Some bigger then others, but in general they had the appeal of local fairgrounds of smaller towns. Very nice for the locals, but not something to  attract many remote people. However in 2002 the local government decided to group it all together, to have the appeal of a big city fair. Therefore they created Park Hilaria, that combines all fairs together and therefore brings fun for every one, has their own terraces and places to eat. It now takes place for the 17th time.

There are also many artists. They mainly focus on the ‘typical’ Dutch entertainment and songs. Maybe not everybodies taste, but it gives a good idea of the Dutch culture as its still alive with the common people. Also traditional Dutch snacks like poffertjes and typical ‘kermis food’ is present. As the entree is free, and kids always seems to love it, it sure its worth a visit.

0

The weather changed a bit, but the summer isn’t over yet.. that means that still quite a few festivals are there to come. This particular one will take place on Sunday 19th of August.

As the name suggests its a happy, relaxed, lazy Sunday party.. but, be warned, its not too lazy, as there are many exciting tribute bands performing, what about these names: Amy Winehouse, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and several others. Sure its not the real thing, but be assured you will hear some great music, and see some awesome shows.

Apart from lots of great artists, there is a market, foodtrucks and there are craft beers. All this in one of the most beautiful parks of Eindhoven, created and donated by the Philips family in 1920. The festival starts at 12.00 and last till about 22.00. The entrance is free!

Eindhoven Liberation party on September 20

0

As Eindhoven has been liberated on September 18, 1944, by the allied forces, the city commemorates this with a festival on September 20th. It runs from 16.00 – 24.00 and entree is free. It, very appropriately, takes place at the 18 Septemberplein.

There will be various artists, many of them local. Liberation040 starts with a commemoration, after which the party starts, with lots of music.

Some of you know that there are quite a few big liberation parties taking place in the Netherlands, on May 5th, when allied forces ended the occupation of the Netherlands on a national level. However as Eindhoven has been liberated before they have their bigger party in September. British, Canadian, American and Polish forces reached the city from the south and the north to force out the Germans occupiers on September 18. They joined forces to move to the north to continue the liberation, city by city. In the end they got delayed around the big rivers dividing the Netherlands, and only managed to liberate most of the country north of those rivers 8 months later.

There is some footage of this liberation (you may recognise Stratums Eind), as well as the event appeared in some movies or tv-series. You can see that the reality was slightly different then portrayed by Hollywood.  During various occasions, especially in 1994, with the 50 years celebration, veterans of aforementioned countries attended and got honored during those commemorations. This year the focus is on music. Next year it will be 75 years since Eindhoven has been liberated, that normally brings a bigger celebration.
