Bringing locals and internationals together with ’30 Seconds’

The popular game 30 Seconds is used in Eindhoven as a tool to facilitate meeting people from other countries as well as the Dutch.

Maybe you have played the ’30 Seconds’ game at your house during the holidays: ‘guess as many topics as possible that are cryptically described in under 30 seconds’. A super-fast game that often gets a lot of people laughing.

The familiarity and accessibility of ’30 Seconds’ are the starting points for organizers Frank van der Vleuten and Irene Martens of SamenUITagenda and Eindhoven News. They organise a monthly event in The Student Hotel in which the popular game is centralised. “Whether you speak Dutch or can only understand English,” says Frank van der Vleuten, “the design of the game is an easy way for everyone to laugh with each other.”

These evenings are not only organised because of the popularity, but also to contribute to the integration within Eindhoven. “At Eindhoven News and SamenUITagenda we notice that there is a great need for activities for internationals to interact with the Eindhoveners,” says Irene Martens. “The game brings local and international Eindhoven people into contact with each other by playing in mixed groups, with the result that cultures learn to open up to each other and get to know each other.” The next ’30 Seconds Game Night will be organized on 8 January 2019 at 8 pm in The Student Hotel in Eindhoven. “Above that, it is a pleasant way to improve your Dutch and English, adds Irene.”

Pussy Riot at Effenaar

0

The Russian feminist punk rock band, Pussy Riot, were in Eindhoven. They performed in the concert hall, Effenaar, yesterday.

Pussy Riot is best known for their provocative performances. In their song lyrics, they often criticize Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin. This has caused them several problems in Russia, and the band members have even been imprisoned in Russian prison camps.

Their performance at Effenaar is part of their new project, Riot Days. One of the band members, Maria Alyokhina, has also recently released a book with the same title, detailing her time in jail after Pussy Riot’s anti-Putin protests.

‘Asparagus in the Fields’ moves to Veldhoven

0

The fifth edition of the Asperges op de Velden (Asparagus in the Fields) event will not take place in Nuenen but in Veldhoven. The pop-up restaurant is to move to a new location.

The restaurant is to be set up, for this fifth-anniversary edition, in the John Kelders Asparagus nursery’s fields in Veldhoven. In particular, this venue is a lot more spacious than Raaijmakers Hoeve in Nuenen where the event has taken place every time so far. There is more space to ‘set the restaurant up more creatively’, the organisers give as a reason for the move. There is also more parking space in the neighbourhood.

This year, Asparagus in the Fields will be held from 15 to 30 May.

National Museum week to start soon

0

The fifth National Museum Week takes place this year from Monday, 8 April to Sunday, 14 April.

During this week, more than 400 museums throughout the Netherlands will showcase their ‘golden’ treasures. Hence the week’s theme – Ons échte goud (Our real gold). “With this fifth National Museum Week we want the whole of the Netherlands to be proud of the museum treasures in their area,” says Mirjam Moll, the Museum Association’s Acting Director says on the National Museum Week website.

“Museum objects that amaze, surprise or move you. This year, too, we are making these accessible and visible to everyone. Museums also invite new visitors who do generally go to museums to come and take a look.”

Eindhoven and surrounds

In Eindhoven, the DAF Museum, Philips Museum, PreHistoric Village, and the Van Abbe Museum will all take part. Each museum has its own showpiece. For example, as pictured, at the Philips Museum, it is the Kapelletje (Little Chapel). This radio, from 1931, with its waves and stars adorning the speaker opening, is an early example of pioneering Philips design. It was designed by Louis Kalff.

This radio distinguishes itself from its angular contemporaries by its rounded forms and the prominent place of the Philips logo. The appealing designs and the good signal reception made Philips the market leader in the early 1930s, with more than a million radios sold.

There will also be activities for old and young. For example, on Wednesday afternoon children between the ages of 8 and 12 can learn to an old craft at the Prehistoric Village. There are also several museums in nearby villages and suburbs, such as Valkenswaard and Veldhoven, that are taking part in this national campaign.

Walking the Southern waterline: 11 Brabant cities defended by water

For centuries in Brabant, water has been both an enemy and a friend. Over hundreds of years, locals have built waterlines and used the water as a defence against attacks.

The longest, oldest, and most used waterline in the Netherlands is the Zuiderwaterlinie (Southern waterline) which runs right through Brabant. In the coming weeks, you can see it up close and learn how that waterline worked. From 19 to 29 June, you can walk through all eleven fortified cities with Expeditie Zuiderwaterlinie.

The routes take you on a tour through 450 years of Brabant military history. The Southern waterline took on its shape and form at the end of the Middle Ages. Over the years, people added defences, which strengthened the original line. Up to and including the Cold War, the Southern waterline remained important for Brabant’s protection.

Get-together

For those who want to do the 20km version, the first stage of Expeditie Zuiderwaterlinie starts in Bergen op Zoom on today (Wednesday), 19 June. There is also a shorter route every day of approximately 10km. You walk this route in a group with a guide. Whatever distance you choose, everyone is welcome to join get-together after each day’s walk. In the past, walkers have sung songs together or watched a dance performance.

The eleventh and final stage, on Saturday, 29 June, leads to Grave. That day you can opt for an extra long, 40km route is may be a nice option if this is the only day that you walk. Participation every day is not mandatory. You can walk one route or multiple routes. The choice is yours as to how much you, and which routes, you decide to walk. Participating in the Expeditie Zuiderwaterlinie is free, but you must register.

Hard or soft ‘g’

While walking, you will discover that the Southern waterline is not only an important military heritage but that it is also a cultural border. Between north and south, Roman Catholic and Protestant, and the hard and soft “g”. Presenter Björn van der Doelen showcases the history of the Southern waterline in a brand new series. He encounters wonderful stories, sometimes about those differences but especially about cooperation to defend Brabant. The first episode can be seen on Sunday, 7 July, on Omroep Brabant.

DDW ambassadors announced

Dutch Design Week (DDW) wants to shake things up this year. They want to reevaluate the status quo.

This year’s ambassadors are Studio Drift, Jalila Essaïdi, Alice Rawsthorn, and Stefano Boeri Architetti. Studio Drift bridges the gap between technological innovations and social interface with interactive art exhibitions. Jalila Essaïdi has been responsible for projects such as ‘bulletproof skin’.

Alice Rawsthorn is an award-winning design critic and author. And last, but not least, Stefano Boeri Architetti. Stefano, and partner, Franscesca Cesa, are on a mission to solve the problem of urbanisation and the impact cities have on climate change. These four ambassadors bring magic, invention, theory, and architecture together.

‘If not Now, then When’

The DDW19 theme is ‘If Not Now, Then When?’ and will be held from 19 – 27 October. During this week, some of the seemingly endless possibilities that could make the world a kinder, better, and more sustainable place will be showcased. These possibilities also cause urgent global problems.

The 2019 theme of DDW takes this a step further. Adding to the question, ‘If not us, then who?’. This trend-setting European design event allows designers to show where the design world currently finds itself.

Director of the Dutch Design Foundation, Martijn Paulen, says, “Designers can address problems by studying these issues on a fundamental level. With this theme, DDW19 wants to contribute to scaling innovation in the areas of ideas, material, and processes. These ambassadors are great advocates for this.”

More than 2.600 designers will present their work during DDW19.

High quiffs, oldtimers and vintage clothing during Rock ‘n’ Roll Meeting

Lovers could return to the time of Elvis Presley last Saturday; high quiffs and oldtimers during the Rock ‘n’ Roll Meeting on Wilhelminaplein Eindhoven.

On the Wilhelmina square several old cars had gathered. There were stalls selling vintage clothes and visitors could freely dance at the stage during the performance of a Brazilian rock band. Some people came not just to relive the past, but also arrived dressed as the rock stars of the time.

Despite the heavy rain, more than enough people came to enjoy the event. All tents were full. According to a visitor that was because Rock ‘n’ Roll is timeless. “The cars, the music and atmosphere remains great”.

When the air was somewhat cleared, visitors could finally enter the dance floor and the party could begin. “But”, a wise visitor said, “I will take it easy, because I still need to drive home”.

Meerhoven24 charity relay race scrapped

1

The Meerhoven24 walking weekend, which raised money for the Make A Wish Foundation, has been scrapped.

Meerhoven24, a 24-hour relay race in which several teams raise money for charity, has become a household name in Meerhoven over the past decade. However, its Board decided that the costs were not worth it. “It really takes a lot of time and energy”, Fred Gundlach, founder of the event, says. “When I said that to the rest of the Board, it turned out even more people felt that way. In the end, four out of six people preferred to stop”. A substitute event was sought, but this did not work out.

Gundlach called it a pity that ‘his’ event has ended, and looks back with melancholy. “It’s very double. I’m looking forward to more rest, but we’ve also seen such wonderful editions”. Preparations for the last edition are therefore more emotional than ever. “I look back at films from previous years and it affects me more than usual. I hope we can make a fantastic final edition”.

A record number of teams will participate in the final edition: 29 in total. With this last run, the organisation hopes to have donated a total of half a million euros to Make A Wish, across all editions.
