On Friday 8 October, Mayor John Jorritsma of Eindhoven informed the city council and the college that he will not seek a second term of office after September 2022. Jorritsma was appointed mayor for six years in 2016. In September 2022, John Jorritsma will have served public affairs for 46 years in various roles, the last five of which as mayor of Eindhoven and before that, more than eight years as commissioner of the King(s) in Friesland.
Mayor until 2022
“I consider it an honor to be the mayor of the city of Eindhoven and I will continue to do so at 100% in the coming period. It does not suit me to look back now; that will come later. I want to look forward, as befits Eindhoven. Together we should put our shoulders to the wheel and get to work on the major issues that require our attention. As Mayor of Eindhoven, all the residents of the city can count on me in the coming year”, says John Jorritsma.
Jorritsma’s decision to withdraw from 2022
Jorritsma has decided to withdraw from the mayor’s position in 2022. He has informed the CvdK of Noord-Brabant and the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations of his decision. Because of the upcoming municipal elections on 16 March 2022, the mayor has announced his decision now. This will allow sufficient time before the municipal elections to prepare a profile for his successor(s), in which both the current and the new council can play a meaningful role. Depending on how the procedure goes, the new mayor may be appointed in or around September 2022.
