Eindhoven nominated for National Citymarketing Trophy

The nominees for the fifth edition of the National Citymarketing Trophy have been announced. For the fourth year in a row Eindhoven has been nominated in the ‘above 100,000 inhabitants’ category.

This year Eindhoven will compete against The Hague, Dordrecht and Amsterdam. The municipalities of Gouda, Leeuwarden and Zandvoort have been nominated in the ‘below 100,000 inhabitants’ category.

Eindhoven’s nomination did not come unexpected. Last year, the much talked about events like ‘Het Wonder van Eindhoven’ (The Miracle of Eindhoven) gave the city and the entire region an enormous boost in national media. Furthermore, Eindhoven365 and the municipality of Eindhoven launched one brand for citymarketing and Eindhoven’s corporate identity in June of last year. All efforts to position the city of Eindhoven as a hotspot for technology, design and knowledge, will now have the same appearance and mentality. But the other cities are very strong opponents. The Hague (2011), as well as Dordrecht (2012) have won the Trophy before. And especially Amsterdam should not be underestimated. It is a powerful contender because of king Willem-Alexander’s coronation and the reopening of the Rijksmuseum in 2013.

In recent weeks mayors, citymarketeers and scientists in the field of citymarketing could nominate their own, or another municipality for the title of ‘Best citymarketing municipality’. The National Citymarketing Trophy (NCT) will be awarded for the fifth time during the National Congress Citymarketing. This congress is being held in hosting city The Hague on Tuesday 10 June.

A number of important aspects were considered during the preselection, like the presence of objectives and core values, policies in this area, research into the effects and results of citymarketing and the way it is being organized. At the final assessment, professional elements like media profiling, monitoring and evidence of impact of citymarketing, will also be taken into account.

The cities will also have to present their developments compared to last year. Finally, this year will have more emphasis on renewal and the contribution to the field of citymarketing.

The jury is led by Cees van Bemmel, chairman of Van Wijnen Holding BV. Besides Van Bemmel, the jury consists of the following members: Erik Braun (lecturer at Erasmus University Rotterdam), Eric de Kluis (editor in chief Binnenlands Bestuur (Domestic Governance0), Gaston Crolla (chairman of the board at Network Citymarketing), Angelique Lombarts (Lecturer City Marketing & Leisure Management Hogeschool InHolland) and Thom Ummels, (independent citymarketing expert and former director of the Foundation for Citypromotion Almere).
