ASML will make hundreds of engineers available in order to address the deficit in technical education.
This shortage concerns both MBO (vocational secondary education), HBO (higher vocational education), as well as university level, the Veldhoven chip machine manufacturer says.
According to the Innovation Origin website, ASML is reacting to a proposal from the National Government in the Hague. A majority of Tweede Kamer (Lower House of Parliament) members want, for example, better cooperation between the educational sector and business professionals in order to address the shortage of technicians. From the technical sector, there are now more initiatives to get business people in front of classrooms.
According to ASML, there are still bumps in the road before the engineers can actually start teaching. “We are running up against the Ministry’s rules. For example, the people in question have no teaching experience, so that is tricky. But that can be resolved if we tackle the problem together”, Chief Executive, Peter Wennik, says to Innovation Origin.
There are currently ASML employees who already voluntarily contribute to the educational sector. The company now wants to further structure this.
