On Klein Tongelreplein, the death of Uldis, the legless homeless man who was much loved in the neighbourhood, is the talk of the day. The Latvian died a few days ago after an operation.
Uldis used to sit across from the Albert Heijn on Klein Tongelreplein. He always greeted people kindly, minded dogs of people of shoppers and knew dozens of residents by their first names.
Legless
Three years ago, Uldis, who was homeless and addicted to alcohol, ended up in hospital. He suffered a heart attack, and then his legs had to be amputated. The neighbourhood sprang into action and raised money for an electric wheelchair. Life on the streets became a lot harder for Uldis without legs. Especially going to the toilet was a drama.
Recently relocated
Because he was officially not entitled to shelter, authorities were at a loss. Uldis even spent some time in a four-star hotel at the municipality’s expense. Because the hotel was near Eindhoven Airport, he feared being deported from the country. However, a short while later he was assigned a small home which, according to his caregiver Riekie, he was very proud of.
There will be a communal funeral, but the date is not known yet. Moreover, the service will be private. At least in Tongelre, Uldis will be remembered as empathetic and beloved.
