Local scholars win big

Five Fontys Eindhoven students have earned the right to call their business, STRAPD, the best student company of the year.

On Monday evening, these students walked away with the Jong Ondernemen (Young Entrepreneurship) Foundation’s main prize. This award was for the HBO (Higher Vocational Education) category.

Harris van Eijk, Jari van den Broek, Steffie van Eemeren, Niels Fickinger, and Willem Moeskops’s company, STRAPD makes ‘ankle socks that never sag’.

“At school, we worked on our own business for an entire year. We had to develop our own product that solves a problem,” Willem said, proudly on Omroep Brabant’s radio show, Wakker! (Awake!).

The company responded to the fashion trend where pants are rolled up when trainers are worn. “We came up with the idea of an ankle sock with an elasticated band around the top, just like you see in boxer shorts,” Willem continues.

“These socks are far more comfortable and also do not sag. The brand name is also far more visible in the elasticated band than on plain woven fabric.”

Thanks to this award, these five youngsters from Eindhoven will take part in the competition’s final. This will be held in Oslo, Norway, from 24 to 26 June.
