PSV has done itself a huge favour by winning the top match against Feyenoord with 1-0. The Eindhoven team managed to score just two minutes into the game. PSV started attack-minded and dominated the game, but collapsed during the game’s second half.
Dominant, intense, strong and with the full support of their Eindhoven fans, PSV controlled the match from the very beginning of the first half. Gastón Pereiro scored the only goal of the match in the second minute. With nobody near him, he managed to score fast and unhampered.
Even though no more goals were scored, this match never got boring. During the first half of the game, PSV was far stronger than the Rotterdam team. This resulted in many Feyenoord violations, with the worst incident involving Steven Berghuis and Luuk de Jong. The PSV striker had to be taken off the field with serious rib injuries and was replaced by Sam Lammers.
Referee Björn Kuipers gave Berghuis a yellow card. Twenty minutes later, the Feyenoord attacker was involved in another incident, this time with Jorrit Hendirx. Kuipers gave Berghuis another yellow card, leaving PSV with one player more on the field than Feyenoord for the rest of the first half. However, even before this incident, the Eindhoven team should have led the game by 2-0 or perhaps even 3-0.
During the second half, fear seemed to have gotten a hold on PSV. The Eindhoven team lost the initiative and were unable to create opportunities. Feyenoord, on the other hand, played a far stronger, attacking and daring game. The team from Rotterdam even managed to play far better with ten instead of eleven men during the game’s second half. There were a few moments which could easily have led to the equaliser.
In the end, however, the Eindhoven team survived Feyenoord’s pressure and the stress it put itself under to win the game. As a result of Ajax losing points in its match against ADO Den Haag, Philip Cocu’s team finds itself back among the leading teams again.
