After many accidents in a short while the people living in and around Locomotiefstraat have run out of patience. Many accidents occur at the crossing with Tongelrese straat. Last Wednesday a pregnant woman got hit by a taxi.
The people are now ready to take action. Next week they want to go door to door to get signatures for a petition. “I know for sure we will have over two hundred signatures in no time”, says Gonnie van der Putten. She wants to start this neighbourhood initiative together with fellow resident, John van Kemenade.
The crossing in question is situated between two rail crossings in Tongelre. Cars drive fast and if they have to make a turn they have to cross a bicycle lane. On top of that, many times parked vans block the view. “Cars have to stand in the middle of the road to see if they can cross”, says Gonnie.
Another man from the neighbourhood passed by and yelled: “Accidents can happen here every day. It is dangerous as hell.” Gonnie will not even let here children cross the road here. “I told my children to cross the road further along the street.”
