Prime Minister Mark Rutte officially launched production of the new Mini Countryman in Eindhoven today.
Eindhoven-based VDL will manufacture the new vehicle for German owner BMW. The Countryman is the third model produced in Born by VDL, after the Mini three-door and Mini Convertible. A plug-in hybrid version of the new Mini will also follow.
VDL Nedcar will hire 1200 extra staff to assist with building the new Mini. The company will switch to a two-shift rotation this year, allowing for production of 200,000 cars per year. Currently 4000 people are employed there, more than double the 1200 when VDL took over from Mitsubishi in 2012.
