Last Tuesday was the third evening Global Village Eindhoven organised their Art and Bite evening. The main purpose is to practise Dutch.
People attending, are following Dutch A1 or A2 lessons at Global Village. Teachers thought it would be good that students also have an opportunity to be able to practice what they have learned.
Globaal Dorp is a new initiative to stimulate integration and introduce international people to Dutch society. They do this with a mixture of culture, education and social activities.
One of the elements is teaching Dutch, another element is the two-room hostel at the premises of ‘t Spoelhuis (wash house) in Dommelstraat Eindhoven and a third element is making the art available of the Inkijkmuseum (micro museum) also in ‘t Spoelhuis.
“The whole idea”, explains Martin Voorbij (artist), “is to bring different people from different disciplines together. At the Art & Bite evenings musicians, poets and artists show their talent and join at the table. International people perform as cooks and share their culture. Meanwhile we are sitting right in the middle of hundreds of pictures of the micro museum.”
Ljiljana Predragovic (originally from Bosnia) as a teacher and organiser in this project adds: “we think offering those easy accessible activities will help people to find their way in the local community. Learning Dutch and socializing is a good way to start. I like to help as a volunteer because I was also a newcomer six years ago, and I know there are many challenges for international people.”
The next Art & Bite is on December 6th and there is a special Christmas edition on the days between Christmas and New Year, for the international people who don’t go home for Christmas. You can check the agenda on their website.
