Polar bears Dierenrijk are in fact Nicky & Simone

Nicky and Simone

The polar bears at Dierenrijk (zoo) have turned out to be female after all. The set of twins were called Nick and Simon as they were believed to be male, but doubt emerged about their sex. And zookeepers were no longer so sure whether they were male.

Well after DNA research the answer turned out that they were not male polar bears. Therefore from now on they are to be called Nicky and Simone. The outcome of the research is excellent news for the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP). This concerns the breeding program to combat endangered animals in European zoos. Dierenrijk (zoo) belongs to this program and female polar bears especially are very rare.

The examination as to their sex was conducted in the beginning, at that stage they were thought to be male. DNA research was needed when doubt about their sex arose. Since they were older, it was difficult to conduct any examination, as they were considered too strong and uncooperative.
