Breakthrough in prostate cancer detection

The TU/e made a promising discovery in prostate cancer detection. The new screening method spares the patient the pain and also causes less complications.

According to the Eindhoven university, the new discovery will save ten thousands of men from a painful screening every year.

The new method uses ultra sound scanners. Those machines use sound waves to create images of organs and structures inside the body. Tumours can be detected more accurately.
Today, a core needle is used to remove a small sample of body tissue. This biopsy is less accurate and painful.

The new screening method is still in the testing stage. If approved, the method will be available in two years. The Amsterdam Medical Center and the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven, amongst others, have already tested the new method.
