Ron has been taking photos at KinderVakantieWeek for 9 years

Children are surprised with a show by a fire breather at the fairytale kickoff of the tenth edition of the KinderVakantieWeek (children’s holiday activities week) in Woensel.

At the entrance of the activity area there are signs with on each panel a visual retrospective of a year. For Ron Krielen this is extra special. “It was a surprise to me, because I didn’t know they were going to do this”, he said. Most of the photos on display were taken by Ron. It is therefore also an overview of his time as a volunteer with the KVW.

Ron takes a special moment to look at one sign. It is the year in which he started, in 2014. You see a group of about 50 children around a big campfire and below that picture is another one of a kind of fire wheel. “There was a resident then who did a game with sparks. This year we’re doing it again with the fire breather”.

KVW provides connection
The first edition was in 2013, but at that time Ron was not there yet. He came to live in the neighbourhood via Trudo housing corporation and felt involved immediately. “Through Trudo I did volunteer work for the neighbourhood and that’s how I came into contact with the activity week for the children. At first it also revolved around residents getting rent reductions if they volunteered in the neighbourhood. It then slowly grew into what it is today”. Especially that connecting factor was a big motivation for him to help out.

This year he is once again making beautiful pictures, but not during the whole event. A replacement is already in place because he finds it difficult to stop completely. Ron will still be here for a few days. “I simply don’t have the time to do all days anymore, but otherwise I would definitely be here more often this week”.

After the morning performance, the children are already busy with activities. In a tent they are busy practicing kung-fu and in the middle of the lawn a group is doing a robot dance during a hip-hop course. Like other years there are two large swimming pools, so in the afternoon they can enjoy splashing around in them.

The “Shadow Organ”, traveling art installation and one of the nominees for this year’s GLOW Talent Awards, highlights stories about corona time

0

Along the route of the Glow light festival, a small organ appears with a projection on the walls of the city behind it. The work is not called ‘Shadow Organ’ for nothing and tells the story of the negative and positive side effects that the corona pandemic has brought with it.

The Shadow Organ is an art installation by artist collective Love for the City and is one of the nominees for this year’s GLOW Talent Awards. The artwork is the last part of a triptych, the first part of which was made in 2020. The corona pandemic is the common thread in the triptych. This year, the focus is on stories about how the pandemic has gotten under people’s skin.

Because even by the end of 2022, the pandemic is not as far away as it sometimes seems. Moreover, many people still struggle with feelings and thoughts that have not been expressed, according to the collective. The artwork must give Eindhoven residents the space to express those thoughts and feelings. By having conversations with residents of the city, the artists have created an image of all the different feelings that live around corona.

That feeling was then visualized by translating the essence of the stories into small templates. The Shadow Organ shines a light on these patterns, so that the stories can be seen on the walls of Eindhoven. In this way, the stories should provide a moment to have a conversation about this topic. “Our artwork should function as a conversation starter. For example, it gives Glow visitors the opportunity to express their feelings.” Isis Boot – Artist of Love for the City.

Love for the City

Before designing the artwork, the makers of the Shadow Organ talked to children, young people and seniors about the lonely and nasty corona period for many – while others experienced the incidentals, such as lockdowns, as pleasant.

Designer Isis Boot highlights one of the most striking stories she has heard in these conversations. “During one of the lockdowns, a grocery delivery person had more time to visit his addresses. This allowed him to have a chat with people who needed that extra. His story is told in the artwork through a series of cars that be projected onto the wall.”

In addition, GLOW visitors can cut and paste a template for their own story and add it to the series of the artwork. That’s how the Shadow Organ is always in motion, that’s the idea. “During the corona time we learned to look at our time differently. It isolated us from the world, but also brought us closer together,” visitor GLOW.

Trilogy

Love for the City started the triptych back in 2020 with the artwork “Separated not isolated”. They had several Eindhoven residents make models of their own living rooms during lockdown for that artwork. Together, these models formed a hotel of stories in isolation. It had to provide a connection between city residents during the lonely time.

Last year, the artist collective created a work of art under the motto “The City of Light Laughs”, an installation in which laughter, from smiling to roaring laughter, was exhibited, because laughter ‘is a virus that can be spread’, according to the collective. Here, too, connection was the goal.

During the event representatives of Meerhoven primary schools, ‘t Slingertouw, Startbaan, and the Korein Kinderplein nursery school will all hold presentations in English about their child-care and child education facilities. There will then be an opportunity for questions.

Korein Kinderplein has very generously agreed to provide free childcare during the whole event for those who will bring their children along. If you would like to attend, please register with the Meerhoven Internationals Platform on their facebook page or by emailing internationals@meerhoven.nl.

Sound design, programming, VR – 1000’s of scholars sample technology

Virtual reality, programming, operating robots, sound design, or 3D-printing. During Night of the Nerds in the Klokgebouw Eindhoven, thousands of high school students got started on technological assignments.

The purpose of Night of the Nerds, part of the Dutch Technology Week, is to get teenagers excited about technology. This intention is that students will end up following a technological field of study. Because, in the high-tech region of Eindhoven, there is a massive shortage of technicians. For that reason, 200 companies, regional municipalities, and educational institutions signed an agreement on Monday to tackle these deficits.

Night of the Nerds certainly attracted 4.500 students. This time, more secondary schools from the North and West of the country and Belgium also found their way to the event.

Eat tacos and watch Mexico-Germany

Coming Sunday (17 June 2018) you can enjoy tacos and the match between Mexico and Germany together. This will happen at Wall Street, Stadhuisplein, Eindhoven. The tacos will be from Mis Amores Tortilleria & Art.

From 15:00h onwards, they will be offering Pastel Azteca and a variety of tacos, and the match between Mexico and Germany will be screened so you won’t miss anything. The event will be till 21.30h.

It is the second time Mis Amores Tortilleria & Art have this cooperation with Wall Street (a pop-up restaurant and temporarily exposition space).

Mis Amores Tortilleria & Art was founded by five Mexicans living and working in the Netherlands. Their passion for Mexican culture and authentic Mexican food were the main drivers to start a small business related to the elaboration of corn tortilla and the promotion of Mexican artists. As entrepreneurs in a foreign country, the process to establish a company was not simple and it took them some months to establish. The process to produce tortillas was the second learning curve to be climbed because as Mexicans they expect the taste of their products to be as good as in their native country.

The final goal is to establish a Mexican food restaurant in Eindhoven, but first, the five Mexican partners would love to offer their tortillas in the city that embraced them to live here. And if you can help them to diversify their business or know about a location, they are open for opportunities.

Tortillas are made of corn, it is the most consumed cereal in Mexico. Corn tortillas are very nutritive, rich in fibres, vitamins, and minerals. It is also gluten-free. The original process for the elaboration of original Mexican tortillas is a Prehispanic process where corn is boiled with calcium oxide and it is called “nixtamalization”.

To order corn tortillas and to have them delivered for free or if you like to know more, you can find more information on their website.
