CERN Acceleration Program @ HighTechXL, Eindhoven

“What a cool idea!  .. to use the best technologies from CERN for new earth-shattering applications .. this is incredible fun .. wow!”. This was Guus Frericks, CEO of HighTechXL, fully motivated and beaming with enthusiasm.

It was 10th December, the Finals of the CERN Acceleration Program, which started early 2018. The various teams had put in many months of hard work, into this intensive program from HighTechXL. The results today were simply out-of-this-world and they even have a new name for this. We now have a new buzz-word, called “Deep Tech”!

CERN Technology

Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire (CERN), founded in 1953 in Geneva. Managed by top European scientists, CERN houses the largest working laboratory, Hadron Collider. This spans 27km and 100m underground, accelerating protons near the speed of light, in 2 opposite directions. This collision generates terabytes of data per second, in an attempt to study the fundamentals of particle physics. Not surprisingly, CERN technologies have played significant roles in other modern-day industries, such as Aerospace, Medical, Safety, and other new Emerging Technologies.

Earlier this year, a select team from HighTechXL visited CERN to discuss possible new applications with their multitude of patents. This successful team from Eindhoven, since then has permission to use 3 key patented technologies. The challenge was to develop applications which would benefit from these technologies.

These 3 key-technologies were RFQ for sensors, laser for communications and carbon dioxide for cooling.

Hackathon and Acceleration Program

A new twist to the traditional Start-Up program since it is a known technology and the goal was to find a suitable application (business as the customer). As explained by Jost Faganel, Program Manager, “it was a complex process, an emotional roller-coaster of uncertainties to steer the teams towards creating the bankable businesses”.

RFQ

Did you know that the world population increased from 1.5 to 6.1 billion in just last 100 years? And we are expecting to be about 8 billion in the next 20 years! With limited agricultural resources, we need to be very efficient at maximizing our crop production. This means we need to know exactly what to do. Absolutely, no room for mistakes! But how do we know which minerals are missing from the fields, and where? Though farmers currently do sampling tests, this is never accurate for the full field and takes days to weeks to process. This is not an efficient process, based on cost and production yields.

Well CERN has developed the wonderful RFQ technology. With this, we are now able to scan agricultural fields, to measure the mineral content up to 30cm deep in the soil. This gives exactly what a farmer needs, with a clear location of the mineral types found, in the soil. This now helps the farmer to identify exactly what fertilizers needed, for which crop, how much to add, and where to add them. According to Ingrid Romeijn, CEO of Dymaxion-Agro, “the farmers now have a technically guaranteed process for maximum success!”

But wait, this RFQ technology has already created a second Start Up, called Dynaxion-Security. This uses the sensor technology towards scanning contents within parcels, containers at harbours and even passenger luggage coming off the belt at airports. According to Cor Datema, CEO of Dynaxion-Security, this is a “revolution in Security”, with an estimated 100billion packages being transported with e-commerce. At best, 80% are checked with traditional x-ray technology. But with RFQ technology, we know the exact composition with zero mistakes. A process which can be automated and scaled up, which is a huge step forward on the global war on drugs and terrorism!

Laser

We have about 2000 active satellites orbiting the planet right now. Sadly, we are unable to send data efficiently between satellites. Yes, we still depend on old technology, where we transmit data from the satellite to earth. This is then transmitted over landlines to remote locations. And finally transmitted from earth. back up to the satellite(s). However, with patented CERN technology, we may have a solution. With their technology, we are able to make a powerful focused laser beam that is extremely accurate over long distances. This would allow data transmission directly between satellites. According to Luis Pedro Oliveira, CEO of Microspot-Communications, “this is faster, cheaper and can support a much higher amount of data than current technologies”. Indeed, this will be a huge step forward for global communications and connecting the planet in the near future!

Just as the previous technology, according to Edzard Janssens, CEO of Microspot-Metrology. The new type of lasers from CERN technology is extremely accurate and structured. As such, he has spun-out to form a separate group, working together with ASML to focus on improving the accuracy of measurements. This is still in its infancy stages though. In the view of ASML spending 100mEuros in 2018 on measurement systems, that is an indication for a high demand for accuracy into the depths of nanometers!

Carbon Dioxide

Is your computer stuck at a speed limit? What if you wanted to speed up your computer at home, what would you do? Yes, like most people, we would probably just buy a new computer. But did you know, that if you were to cool your processor, you could gain higher performance? Yes, welcome to the world of High-Performance Computing, where companies are pushing for faster computer processing speeds. This is critical, to get ahead of the competition, to be the fastest and often at any price.

Cooling system innovation

At CERN, they developed the best environment-friendly cooling system, using carbon dioxide. In fact, this patented technology offers an opportunity for low temperatures, down to -45 degrees Centigrade at very stable conditions. In fact, CERN themselves are evaluating this system for their own in-house computing infrastructure. This project has now gained momentum. The first prototype has been successfully tested at Nikhef (National Institute for Subatomic Physics), Amsterdam. This is now being adapted for the pilot phase for several other companies. According to Rudie Verweij, CEO of Incooling, and “Entrepreneur of the Year” feels that “we are at the brink of a huge breakthrough for Computing Technology. This will soon be mainstream in the coming 5 years”, and there will be no more speed-limits for us!

Next steps?

Certainly, it was a great day. We also had pitches from DSM on the future of 3D printing. All teams were a phenomenal success, and secured substantial support towards building their businesses for next steps. According to Anique Soetermeer, Co-Founder of HighTechXL, “this is only the start of better things to come”. This is the first of the series while the next event will be in April 2019.

Suggest to sign-up early for the upcoming events at the High-Tech Campus.

See you there!

Renewed Van Gogh museum opens doors

The innovative Van Gogh Village Museum in Nuenen has reopened. The story of the famous painter during the period he lived in Nuenen has a new look. The former Vincentre has been expanded with an exhibition space and a new wing.

The museum was closed for six months because of the renovation. Next Thursday the first visitors can come and take a look. “It has taken a long time, but we are happy that we can open again. The museum has grown 2.5 times in size and because of this we have also been able to expand the collection”, Frank van den Eijnden, director of the Van Gogh Brabant Foundation, explains.

“It’s great to be open again and explain to everyone the Nuenen period of Vincent van Gogh. You actually get to know him as a person and why he made all those paintings”,  Simone van der Heiden, director of the Van Gogh Village Museum, explains.

Potato eaters

The renovation is immediately apparent when you enter. It looks like you’re stepping into the old town hall, but according to Van den Eijnden, it’s really the Van Gogh Village Museum. “The museum can be divided into a number of sections. For example, you first enter his studio in Nuenen where he painted his first works. Then you move on to his masterpiece the ‘Aardappeleters (potato eaters)’. We have arranged it so that you can actually take a seat at the table at which the aardappeleters also sat”.

“Then I haven’t mentioned the light lab we created together with chip machine manufacturer ASML. In the lab, we show visitors how Vincent van Gogh dealt with colours in his work so you can apply this yourself”.

Brainport

Through international cooperation in a brand new museum, the Van Gogh Village Museum aims to attract not only people from Nuenen, but from the entire region. “ASML has contacts all over the world and can share the story of Van Gogh globally. This also contributes to familiarity”, Van den Eijnden said.

Van der Heiden: “Vincent van Gogh is an icon in the region and is known throughout the world. There is no place on earth where you can see so much of him. In that we are truly unique. The cooperation with ASML shows that we can strengthen each other here in the region in order to add something to this region that we can be proud of”.

Queen Máxima will festively open the museum in a month’s time.

Entrepreneur and rally driver Jan de Rooy passed away

Jan de Rooy has passed away. The former rally driver, winner of the Dakar Rally and transport entrepreneur, died on Tuesday at the age of 80.

“After a very short illness, our dad, husband and grandfather passed away peacefully and was reunited with our great love, Annie. He has dedicated 65 years to his transport company De Rooy, which celebrated its centenary last year”, the family business said in a response.

The Eindhoven region has lost one of its most notable transport entrepreneurs. Jan de Rooy was born in Eindhoven on 19 February, 1943. His father Graad had been running the transport company for years, which Jan, then 22 years old, took over in 1965. He had fourteen trucks at the time, which eventually became four hundred. His brother Harry also entered the transport world and started De Rooy Logistics, which still transports parts for the DAF factories.

Rallycross

That is also where most people know Jan de Rooy from: racing DAFs. He started rallycrossing in 1969, not in trucks, but cars. De Rooy managed to win several Dutch titles and international podium places, especially in his DAF 55, until he switched to trucks in 1982 at the request of DAF itself.

The manufacturer wanted Jan to participate in Paris-Dakar, a desert race across Africa to the Senegalese capital Dakar. There he quickly got the nickname ‘De Beer’ (‘the bear’) and that did not only refer to his large stature. Fearless and extremely agile, he drove his converted trucks faster and faster through the desert.

Rally winning trucks

De Rooy built special trucks for the desert rally. For example, he turned two trucks into one, but with two engines and two cabins: the double header in 1984. Things really got serious after the introduction of the DAF Turbo Twin ll in 1986, a truck with two engines that together delivered more than a thousand horsepower.

In 1987 he became winner of the truck classification. His lead over the number two in that class was no less than fourteen hours. De Rooy even finished eleventh in the general classification, among the rally cars. That left him wanting more, because the driver from Son wanted to compete with the rally cars.

Dramatic accident

Jan de Rooy was given a completely free hand by DAF in 1988 to win the general classification. The result was the 1200 hp (horse power) X1. The images in which the DAF truck overtakes the car of top driver Ari Vatanen are iconic. De Rooy also deployed a second truck, but it overturned. The accident claimed the life of Kees van Loevezijn and driver Theo van de Rijt was injured. DAF withdrew from the rally and Jan de Rooy would not appear again in Paris-Dakar for years.

His son Gerard managed to persuade him to participate again from 2002, but in 2009 Jan de Rooy finally stopped participating in the ‘Dakar’. He felt that he could not tolerate his employees to have such an expensive hobby during the economic crisis. Moreover, he did not agree with the rally being moved from Africa to South America.

Succession

Son Gerard and daughter Anneke de Rooy have been at the helm of the transport company since 2010. Something their father Jan was very proud of. There was also follow-up as a victor in the Dakar Rally. First in 2007 when cousin Hans Stacey won the truck rally. In 2012, son Gerard finally managed to win. That was particularly emotional for father Jan, 25 years after his own victory. In 2016, his son won a second Dakar title in the trucks.

Jan de Rooy no longer followed the Dakar Rally in recent years. He lived a relatively secluded life in Middelbeers with his partner.

Metal Factory prepares metalheads for music industry

The Eindhoven Metal Factory is the only metal music training course in the Netherlands and has been around for ten years. During the course, students learn everything it takes to make it as a metal music professional. “This is really cool”.

The course celebrated its tenth anniversary in July. Although music courses already existed in the Netherlands, there was no institution specifically for this genre. Metalheads from all over the country, and even outside the Netherlands, now come to Eindhoven for the training.

Career

During the training, attention is not only paid to the music, but also to everything else involved in the music industry. “In pop music, breaking through means becoming world famous, but in more alternative music, breaking through means making it your job in the long term”, teacher Kevin Quilligan says. Students therefore also learn other things to make it in the industry. “When I came here, I naturally wanted to become famous”, second-year student Bas says. “But once you come to the training, a world opens up for you. You will learn about the work as a stage manager and how to organise events. That’s what I’m going for now, to become a professional musician”, he explains.

Metal capital

The training is provided by Summa College and the lessons are given at Dynamo. Eindhoven has been the metal capital of Europe since the 1980s, thanks to festivals such as Dynamo open air and the annual Metalfest. That is why the city was the logical choice for the metal training. Student Niels is from Flevoland. “It’s a completely different way of teaching here”, he says. “It’s very cool, you get a lot out of it”.

National election debate in English in Eindhoven

Eindhoven News is organising an election debate in English at the city hall on 16 November at 18:00 hrs. The candidates from parties possibly forming the next government and candidates from the incumbent parties will be present.

To register click here

Internationals have many burning questions, such as inflation, taxation, housing issues, the 30% ruling, immigration policy, higher education courses in English, inflation, economic growth, childcare allowance and so on. The number of internationals with a vote in the Brainport region has increased significantly. If you have a vote, it’s all the more important that you attend the debate before you decide.

Is it right to convert agricultural land to neighbourhoods to solve the housing crisis? What are the ecological implications of doing so?

Should health insurance deductibles be abolished? If so, how does it affect premiums?

What do parties propose to deal with the demand for daycare for children?

Should families of refugees be allowed to live in the Netherlands? Which parties support that which don’t?

What are the standpoints of the parties about taxation and futuristic tax reform?

Should other countries be welcome to join the European Union? What are the connotations?

Recently, Omtzigt, the leader of the NSC (Nieuw Sociaal Contract) party, said that expats control the housing market in Amsterdam because of their disposable income, enabled by the 30% tax rebate. Bhagaya, an expat, defends, “The disposable income because of the 30% ruling is barely sufficient to take care of the international school fees of my two children”. How will the changes to the 30% ruling affect the Dutch economy? How do political parties intend to deal with reverberations?

The international students, on the other hand, are concerned about housing issues, zoekjaar visum (search year visa) and the country’s economic growth. After all, they would like to weigh their prospects.

Date: 16 November 2023

Time: 18:00 to 20:00 hrs

Venue: Raadzaal, Stadhuis Eindhoven (city hall)
