The construction of the Eindhoven Lichtjesroute is running perfectly on schedule. Volunteers are busy these weeks hanging the last series of light decorations in the city.
Monday afternoon, it was Woensel-West’s turn. They hung the decorations on Groenewoudseweg, using an aerial platform. “We’re on schedule, but it’s still a lot of work. It is always stressful when 18 September approaches,” says Tits Bongers of the Lichtjesroute.
No restrictions
Last year, the Lichtjesroute was adjusted because of the corona pandemic. They had removed busy places, such as the duck pond in Woensel, from the program. This year there are no restrictions for visitors. The construction job seems to get tougher every year for the staff of the Lichtjesroute.
Shortage of volunteers
The organization is looking for fresh volunteers, as there is a shortage of volunteers. “There is now a burden on our elderly people,” explains Bongers.
The Lichtjesroute starts every year on September 18. It is the day Eindhoven was liberated from German occupation in 1944. The route through the city keeps the memory of the liberation alive. Many decorations also refer to the liberation.
