From next year, only soot-faced ‘Piets’ will be part of the Sinterklaas parade in Eindhoven. This was announced in a letter from the organisers.
It states the parade should be fun for everyone. After discussions with the various parties involved, the decision was made – in 2020, Zwarte Piet will disappear in Eindhoven.
“We realise this change will never satisfy everyone. It is of the utmost importance for us that this becomes an enjoyable event, especially for the children,” the organisers write.
Zwarte Piet has already changed in recent editions of the parade in Eindhoven. Glittering Piets, Piets with coloured wigs, and Bob the Builder Piets have been seen. Zwarte Piet’s lipstick and gold earrings are also a thing of the past.
