The Vlinderstichting (Butterfly Foundation) needs your help.
They want to find out how many butterflies are attracted to flowers in people’s gardens. So, from 6 – 28 July, the foundation would like everyone to count the number of butterflies in their gardens.
According to the Vlinderstichting, things are not going well with the butterflies in the Netherlands. There are far fewer of these flying insects than a quarter of a century ago. “This is mostly because their habitat is disappearing,” says a spokesperson for the Foundation.
Meadows disappearing
“Butterflies’ lives depend on flowering plants. However, flowering meadows are disappearing. They are built on, paved, or mowed.”
By counting the number of butterflies, the Vlinderstichting can see immediately how nature it is faring in a particular area. The Foundation has been collecting this kind of information for years now. This helps better protect butterflies.
People can pass along their observations via an app called Vlindermee of via the Foundation’s website.
