A trial of self-driving robot cars that can transport tools, pallets, and more is underway at the Brainport Industries Campus.

Field lab AML first came up with the idea in 2016. The current trial is part of “Factory of the Future” innovation programme.

The carts are intended to enable 24/7 transportation both within factories and between them. This means production can continue when employees clock out.

“Amng other things, we’re currently testing the safety of the robot carts around people, and whether the idea is financially feasible. We expect the trial to be finished in 2020, which is when we’ll make a decision”, said ALM’s Erik Vermeulen.

The trial is backed by Brainport Industries, the TU/e, Erasmus University, Brabant Development Agency (BOM), Eindhoven-based KMWE, and more.
