Bijenkorf staff protest for better salaries

Employees of the Eindhoven branch of Bijenkorf, a large department store, will hold a protest for better salaries tomorrow.

Salaries offered by Bijenkorf have previously been rejected by its employees. For example, Bijenkorf offered them a 1.5 percent salary increase over two years. Yet FNV Handel, the largest trade union in the Netherlands, say that that figure should be increased by a further 3.5 percent.

Employees plan to hand out tulips and talk to passers-by outside the store on Piazza tomorrow. Employees of the Amsterdam and Rotterdam branches have recently taken similar action, too.

These protest days have been named ‘Dwaze Zaterdagen’, or ‘Foolish Saturdays’, playing on Bijenkorf’s large discount sales which go by the same name.
