The parking spots that will disappear from the centre of Eindhoven will be made available on the outskirts of the city or in parking garages.
This was the Eindhoven City Council response to a question from the D66. This local political party is of the opinion that the decision should be steered toward a car-free CBD. Eindhoven should, as Utrecht does, discourage the use of cars in its city centre.
The Municipality agrees with this. In answer to the D66’s questions, they stated that ‘in almost all of the current developments, more parking spaces are being removed rather than being added.’ Examples of this are the parking spots in Station and Tram Streets. When parts of these streets are considered for redevelopment, they are almost always replaced by a building or green area.
When the new plans for Vestdijk were revealed, the City Council also stated that, by 2025, Eindhoven’s inner city should be car-free.
