The inhabitants of Geldrop-Mierlo are divided over a possible fireworks ban in their town. This is the finding of a survey conducted by the Municipality.

Forty-eight per cent are in favour of a total ban on fireworks, 52% are not.

However, there is wide support for setting up a fireworks-free zone during the New Year’s period. About 70% of the residents would like to see such zones. They will be in places which experience a lot of nuisance, such as nursing homes, hospitals or animal shelters. The Municipality would then need to determine those zones, say the majority of the population in Geldrop-Mierlo.

The Mayor and Councillors conducted the survey, at the request of the City Council. They wanted to know what the inhabitants think about any ban. It is expected that municipalities will soon have more opportunities to curb the use of fireworks.

In total, only 2 300 people participated in the survey.
